Pingolf is explained in various places, but basically on each machine a goal (score or otherwise) will be posted. How many balls it takes you to achieve that goal is your score for that machine. The qualifying machines will be divided into group of (traditionally) 18 machines, and you'll play each one once.
This has the advantage that good players play machines for less_ time, not more.
