I'd like to use this thread to gather the experiences of the attendees and the creators of the custom pins in the Multimorphic P-ROC-powered custom pinball booth at expo. We had 6 machines for play in that area: two Buffy the Vampire Slayer pins, Casino, Deadpin, Doom, Ironman HD, and Total Annihilation.

It's great to see people walk up and enjoy and appreciate our games. Expo is the one of the few times a year we get together and share our work with the public. We all know we aren't spooky, JJP, or Stern and even if we do use the same board as Dutch Pinball, we aren't them, either --at least not yet. We know there isn't much industry impact on what we do, so most podcasts pay us no mind. And really, we are also sorry that you aren't going to be able to buy games from us. Attendees often ask, "so why are you doing this?" and ... I don't know if any of us are sure why we are doing it.

I can tell you it fills us all with great pride to share these machines with the attendees of Expo, that's for sure.

So, thank you to those of you to those of you who stopped by and played our games. Those who paid us even backhanded complements were enormously helpful and made it much harder to return to our normal day jobs today.

If you have any thoughts, comments, pictures, videos, or...anything, please post/link them here. Especially video. It seems we were all too busy socializing and talking shop to take any of our own games.

Finally, an enormous thank you goes out to Gerry Stellenberg for making the P-ROC and for inviting us all to expo to show off our games. We would not be there without his great work, and the work of Adam Preble on the pyprocgame framework.

Thanks everyone!!

Who's that hoser who keeps hogging Buffy? J/K, Jack Danger was saying that Ed's a really good player. Looks like a great row of games. Love the creativity that is possible in this hobby.

Jack played too. I forgot I had these.

Ed was a tremendously nice guy and an amazing sport. Here's the behind the scenes shot of him partaking in the subversive Expo pictures thread:

My favorite section of the entire expo!

Huge thanks to all that dedicate the time to these creations!

#6 7 years ago

I loved it... from Austin, TX.
What needs to happen is you guys need to tour with Gerry... Next stop here in Dallas for TPF'17 in March.
Seriously; I would have loved to be there this year... but Expo is dead to me for reasons I've already voiced.

I had an awesome time. It is really great seeing everyone's projects all in one place. I just wish I would have taken some pictures. Anyone have any pictures of Total Annihilation?

I didn't take a single picture. Well except for the hall of death we have to wheel our machines down

Some pics of the underside of Doom. You do such beautiful and intimidating work...

I'm the great pretender in this bunch of dudes. Too scared to try to make a game myself, just keep dinking with code on existing games. All the stuff you guys built is awesome.

I don't have any pictures to share, though. I never take pictures unless it's for humor sake.

#11 7 years ago

Another big thank you to all of you guys who do this. Your efforts are inspiring.

In my opinion the biggest surprise and almost winner of the whole show was Total Annihilation. What an awesome game!

For those that haven't seen it, TA is a custom game with a single level playfield that very much reminded me of an early 80's Williams. The first thing that hits you is the cool synthesizer new wave/techno soundtrack. I chatted with the builder Scott and he created the sound tracks himself, including the fun 8-bit sound effects. The playfield itself was pretty straightforward, but the fast orbits and the inline drop protected scoop gave the table that addicting "just one more game" feel. No fancy graphics, no ramps, no artwork (it was a whitewood). Just pure pinball goodness.

Great job Scott!

Later,
EV

Sorry Scott I only have this picture . But it does show how much time you put into just wiring your game . Everything in the P-Roc area was awesome ! Thanks all who brought their games , these were the highlight of my expo trip .

Each and every one of these games was spectacular, and I was proud to share a booth with them. Even more amazing than the incredible machines are the people who made them. They are all incredibly talented and selfless members of the pinball community, and I'm happy to call them all friends.

Anybody can come up with ideas and tinker around with them. It takes incredibly passionate, talented, and disciplined people to take an idea all the way through from concept to complete implementation. That they're all willing to advise and help others realize their custom pinball dreams too makes them even more special, and that they're all down to earth and friendly people makes it an absolute pleasure to hang out with them.

Thanks, guys. Expo wouldn't be the same without you. The pinball industry wouldn't either.

I was on the fence about undertaking building my own machine before expo. You guys definitely pushed me on the "sleeves up" / "let's do this" side of the yard. Super-inspiring work!

I do intimidating work??

It's scary good

This is Utter nonsense. Sure, I also feel intimidated by these ultra talented builder guys (or worse, the ones doing builds and code), but code matters.

More to the point, your CCC code has been an essential part of the larger body of "PyProcGame programming knowledge" out there for some time now. Hell, I used your code as one of the references I (and many others) consulted when learning pyprocgame, so you're going to have to stop pretending you're just a pretender.

I'll work with you, Eric

#21 7 years ago

I would also work with you Eric. I'm pretty sure anybody would.

#22 7 years ago

Total Annihilation was awesome. Music was great. Reminded me of tron. One of my favorite games at expo. Cant wait to see where it goes.

Short video here:

#23 7 years ago

I would never use Eric's amateur code , well except his …

In all seriousness I've always said that what he does is crazier than what I do. Re-creating the software of a game is a case where anything less than perfect results in idiots bitching about it not being right or worse someone taking it and then profiting off of it.

when I build a game the rules are what I make them and I don't have to hear shit about it from some know it all, well except for that little guy at expo who wants to tell all of us how our games should operate.

#24 7 years ago

The music is good on TA... As is the light show. Looking forward to seeing it at TPF!
Still; I didn't see anyone dancing in that short video.

TA stole the show. There was a lot of good stuff in the P-roc area, but TA put all the elements together perfectly.

Woah. Too dark ...and that's coming from me!

I think Eric is lucky to have so many people engaged in and using his project, and I'd bet he'd say similarly. Without a doubt there can be some frustration that "users/players" don't necessarily appreciate all the work and frustration that goes into a project when they casually bag on an issue, but that's to be expected, and par for the course.

I even appreciate the guy that you are referring to at Expo (to some extent); having someone be brutally honest gives us a tiny taste of the "real pinball company experience" as most people have little problem being brutally honest to those people.

I've received my share of negative feedback about Buffy and I've had it really bum me out. Thankfully most are from people who refuse to play it, or just write Nelly and me off as SoF killers. Negative feedback from people who are willing to give it a chance and play it is honesty helpful. Many folks simply don't feel comfortable in that way. This weekend, I even Asked Hilton for his patented brutal honesty and was happy to receive it.

I am always open to useful feedback as well. As you mentioned though some of the less useful feedback can burn you out. It gets old when all you read is "I wish they hadn't destroyed an SOF" or " those poor SOF machines" or the one that pisses me off the most "it's just a rethemed SOF" The latter is usually said as they pass the machine not even wanting to play it.

It was great hearing Hilton's feedback when we asked him, and his answer confirmed exactly why I thought the game wasn't get more attention. "It's Buffy". I get it. The name of the show is probably the worst thing about (the show). Most people wont even give the show a chance because of it. I suspected this was the reason behind our game not getting as much buzz as others, and Hilton confirmed it. Its a bummer, but I get it. We just get the double whammy as not only do we have that issue to overcome, we also have the SOF killer reputation going for us. Lol. I cant do anything about the name of the show, but I do plan to squash that other issue. That is why I am planning to build another Buffy entirely from scratch. Then no one can say its a retheme, "just an SOF", or call me a killer anymore.

Thanks again for your feedback! I am glad that you gave the game a shot and that you enjoyed it. It will only get better too, as Mocean continues to finish up the code on it. We look forward to your feedback in the future.

I like LIONMAN! Just as much if not more than your average person ,to say you killed a swords of fury is just nonsense. Few things are more LIONMAN than building your own game . Can't wait to see the from scratch Buffy , I'm sure it will be awesome!

#32 7 years ago
Quoted from Mocean:

I am totally open to feedback and suggestions, and sometimes they are really good ideas, but it also depends on how it is delivered. Maybe I am being pedantic, but if someone says "have you thought about . . " or 'it would be cool if . . . ", I am far more open to it than 'you should really . . .', or 'the way you did xyz is wrong'

I am sure you guys have reached your limit on 'you killed an SOF'. When that comes up with my Grand Prix re-theme, I'll pull out the photo to show how the playfield was beyond trashed.

I don't know the game as well as you guys do, but are there certain parts you can't get anywhere else? I am sure you could CNC new playfields and your ramps and wireforms are new. It must be fairly close to not needing a "donor" SoF game at this point?

I have spent a lot of time lately with part sourcing and vendor relationships. If there is a part that you need, maybe I can help.

I can attest to this. For years, I avoided the show thinking it was just some sappy teenage daytime soap opera drama. But, years later after Joss Whedon's name started gaining recognition and from repeated recommendations from friends, I finally saw the show--and enjoyed it.

So, I could see how the name of the pin could get similar treatment from folks not familiar with the show.

TA was great. It's what makes pinball so exciting - a fun game that is challenging.

Buffy was impressive but I don't condone using SOF's to make em.

Key word "presently".

All these pins were amazing in their own way, thus the reason to build them! They are all custom machines which is awesome! I would LOVE to make a custom one off pin for me, if for any other reason because it would be a hell of a challenge to just see if I could do it, and it would help me save a TON of money over the high priced pins out there now!

My favorites of the show:
TA....sometimes less is more and that it was! I loved the simple shots, the kick ass music (one of my comments to my buddies when playing was it reminded me of the club scene in Tron), inlane drops (which I love!) and a scoop that was punishing!! Absolutely NO delay on that puppy kicking out! Well done! I do have to thank Kelly from the Alien team for suggesting I play it....glad he did!

Doom was also one of my favorites....LOVE that game! This pin was very well laid out...loved the no shooter lane, the downward ramp, and the ramp feeds to the inlaces were insane! Better be ready or you're going to miss it! Only issue I had was with the flipper strength...I asked if they could be stronger, but I was told that he didn't want the machine to get damaged....I get it, but if I could have made all the ramps easier, it would have been a lot more fun. Still a VERY cool pin and WELL done! I hope it is back next year and is even better!

The multimorphic pins were awesome as usual and I really enjoyed talking to Gerry and Eric (I know Eric isn't with the company, but they were both talking to me at the same time Liked the seminar so I could see how it was made and look like a fool trying to get the artwork off! But I got a shirt from that though which is nice! Great pins Gerry! Look forward to seeing what comes out next!

Buffy was great as usual! Very impressed with this one...well done!

Casino was awesome! Again, could have used a little stronger flippers, but he did adjust it for me and it was a little better....saw a guy play it late Sat and he was making the shots so either it was set stronger or I just suck! haha! Dice, roulette wheel, upper play field....all very cool and impressive!!

Iron man was very cool too....deffinately the way IM should have been made in the first place! Nice job Eric!!

Pretty much liked all the machines! Well done and very impressive to all the designers/makers!! Maybe I should give it a try one of these days!
