I've wanted one of these for a long time, finally got one yesterday. It was actually a local pickup from someone who bought it on ebay over 10 years ago and hardly played it in that time.

Nice looking Machine. Welcome to the club. Be ready to be pleased and angry game after game lol.

Has anyone had the issue where the after the Dorothy Multiball the music, spinner and fan don't stop? The game acknowledges that multiball has ended and the DMD displays the typical non multiball stuff but the spinner and the fast music don't stop until the current ball drains. The Chase multiball ended as it should its just the Dorothy Canister multiball mode.

It started doing it after the drop target broke off, I had to remove the upper trough to get the part out. At first I thought the switch contacts weren't detecting the balls properly but I verified all the balls were being detected in both troughs.

Hi all,

Can anybody confirm if they are running the newer 520-5300-00 CPU board in Twister without any sound issues?

Thanks,

Steve

What is the general consensus of how many Twisters SEGA made? I remember reading 1200 years ago but I can't find anything on it now.

1600 is the number i have heard a few times unofficially

I started having an intermittent issue with the DMD going blank randomly. I checked the power at the back of the DMD connections and was missing the 5v.

I followed the wiring back to the Display Power board in the back box.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

I removed the board and sure enough it had cracked solder joints at pins on both connectors.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

I removed the solder and resoldered all the pins.

Since I was there I also replaced the horrid IDC connectors with crimping on new trifucons pins.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

No more flaking out.

Here is a video of the weird multiball issue my Twister is having. At 1:07 I start the Dorothy multiball and you'll noticed after I loose all but one of the ball the multiball ends but the spinner and music keep going.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this issue?

guessing a bad switch in the trough that isn't detecting the 2nd to last ball is draining (but when the last one does that switch detects a ball)

Nope, all switches are good. It knows it drained and the mode ends, the display goes back to normal and targets behave normally, its just that the spinner and music don't stop.

The fact the music remains on but the display and targets go back to normal makes me think it's a logic based problem, might be a corrupted or poorly mounted IC? Spinner problem could be your magnet board (assuming the diode upgrade has been done). The IC might be bad, I have read those can be corrupted from time to time.

Thanks for the reply,

The resistor in the connector upgrade has been done, but not sure about the diode- what does that upgrade entail?

Both magnets behave as they should, so I'm not sure that is what the issue is.

I was thinking I'd burn new roms and see if that does anything. I read 4.05 is the highest software and mine is 4.04.

#413 3 years ago

The other thing I notice is the Canister Multiball restart doesn't show up when this glitch happens.

Sega Service Bulletin 91

Has an additional zenner diode added to the magnet board. Although the symptoms listed are not what happening to your game. Intermittent activation of the motor during play.

Our Twister will randomly not recognize that the ball is drained and it won’t kick out a new ball after it cycles through. To get it to work again we have to mess with the balls where they sit before they are recognized again. We have demagnetized the balls which has helped but does not completely fix the issue. If anyone has any words of wisdom it would be appreciated. Especially in layman’s terms, I just know enough to keep our personal machines working. Thanks.

Check the what switches are showing active under the "CLR" selection in the diagnostic menu. You might have a faulty switch in the trough. One of the opto board (sender or receiver) being loose and making & breaking the switch can cause it to act goofy as well.

Take a photo of what the CLR screen is showing with all 5 balls in the trough.

Thank you for helping. This is what shows on the CLR screen. When I select run nothing happens.

So it’s not detecting any of the balls. It should look like this:

BEA50DA5-03D1-41BA-B2C6-9F2FD37B6EDD (resized).jpegBEA50DA5-03D1-41BA-B2C6-9F2FD37B6EDD (resized).jpeg

When you press run you’ll sell a ball move to 15 then very briefly in 16.

Since you have nothing I would check for a broken wire on the trough switches.

#421 3 years ago

All the wires from the trough go to a connector to the left of the trough.
Check wiggle the green (common) wire.
That would be my first guess

I modified a cow toy I found on the internet. Originally it was quite annoying, a loud tinny Mooo! Mooo! Mooo! every 2 seconds and glowing red eyes as it walked.. I think Amazon may have some? Dismantled to change the front legs and tail position, disabled the speaker and eyes leaving the just mechanical kicking. Slip ring used for the 3v wiring to rotate around the motor. Plastic repair putty and a threaded hex post to help secure the cow to the motor and presto... Twister Cow

Yes, its actually mentions chrome bottom in the parts section of the manual, I guess Sega eliminated it to save costs./

Hi guys,

I bought a twister about 7 years ago and am finally getting around to bringing her back to life. I bought it from an operator not working, so ive never seen it running.

The fault im having is when I turn it on, the game boots with DMD working well but the PF insert controlled lamps are hard on (GI is fine) and when I close the coin door the flashers, fans/spinner and controlled lamps stay hard on but the GI switches off.

I can enter service mode via the coin door test buttons and run the tests and make adjustments fine, most PF switched test fine (I haven tested coils yet) although neither flipper buttons or EOS are registering.

When I got the machine it did have the power driver board replaced (by op) with a stern whitestar rev. G. One thing I have noticed is the L204 led is blinking so I dont think im getting a watchdog hand shake from the CPU. (the CPU is in excellent condition with battery corrosion)

I have replaced the ribbon cable with no change.

Really weird fault as the game boots, attract sound/music is fine and test mode hold its settings as it should.

I'm a little stumped on this one so any ideas would be welcomed

Driver board fault. The blanking light is off in your picture. It need to be on solid for the driver board to be alive. Normally when there’s a fault it flashes as the watch dog is barking ( timing out repeatedly)

Yeah its a consistent flash, where do you think I should start.....Ive rebuilt the power section....Im thinking maybe its 1 of 8 the 74ls138 keeping in reset?

These whitestar boards are such a shit to work on...

They're not that bad.

double check the ribbon cable that goes between the two boards. You can use a pliers to try to re crimp the connector to the ribbon cable. Its a common fail point and if its a bad connection you'll get a lot of goofy stuff.

Even the one that goes to the display can cause weird game behavior (and display issues obviously)

Music playing briefly is correct.

Hi all,

I am still on the lookout for a ramp that is in salvageable condition to use for a mold. I am sure there are plenty of Twisters out there in need of a new ramp, she is a fast game and the original ramp was not as thick as some of the other Ramps out there from that era.

Unfortunately Twister doesn't seem to be on anyone's "to do" list as far as ramp reproductions go. So if anyone has any ideas on who to contact it would be appreciated?

I will use mine if the damage gets worse but as it isn't garunteed molding will work, I don't want to take the risk of being left with a ramp-less game.

Still looking/learning as to what options are best for a mold. Maybe making a cast from the right material.

Back in the Twister club with my old pin.
She needs some work
Have a string of GI lights out
Autolaunch coil is randomly firing
Center twister is almost never spinning with new apple juice board and old board that still worked. Magnet is working and locking up nicely. Did the “dr pinball” on it tonight and the result was “replace I/o board” so it’s time to bust out the manual and see what’s wrong in the circuit. Grounded Q6 and didn’t spin. Found 24V (on 20v circuit) on j6-p10 and j7-p1.
The fan sounds like a pissed off weed eater.
Once I get it up and going she’ll get stripped down and rerubbered. Last pin I did in Titan all blacks. Anyone done anything different? I gave up on white. Too hard to keep clean.

Hi all..

I am wondering if anyone knows a common cause why the diodes in the Twister magnet board keep desoldering and dropping out. There the right ones and doubled as per the update. The board is working perfectly but after a while the diodes desolder and fall off. My obvious conclusion is it's drawing a heap of current for some reason but have no idea why or where.

Any advice for this problem is appreciated. I have finished the refurb and want to have her working 100%.

Cheers

Yep. I got a whole bunch of diodes out of Israel of all places. I have upgraded it 3 times. Once professionally and 2 times off my own bat. Also tried the upgraded board that's on offer from the UK. The upgrade board doesn't work at all. The old board will work until the diode drop off. I'm stumped.
