Here is my next EVEL ISSUE: The extra chime at position #7 on the self test does not fire, nor during game play. I can ground the tab on the transistor AND at the coil and it fires fine (new coil ..and yes good diode). I test the transistor and it tests good. It just won't fire via self test or during normal operation (although by looking at the manual..I am unclear where the "extra chime" is to work during play or start up).

My game does have the ultimate MPU in it... I wondered if it just had a programming flaw in that it was not programmed to include the extra chime in operation or test? I just cannot find an issue of continuity to the coil for power(+42 at the coil) and I have tested the wire continuity to the driver board...it's good and it fires fine by grounding the tab of the resistor.

Could it be the pre transistor chip... With just 1 coil not firing? Can just "1" output be bad on the chip?

Seems odd that it fires just fine manually (even at the board), but not any other way.

Any thoughts?

The pre-driver transistor is definitely the next thing to consider as the cause of the problem. The pre transistor chip is just a series of transistors in one package. It`s definitely possible for just one transistor within the IC to go bad. The next thing back from there is the 4 to 16 decoder, but the pre-driver transistor seems most likely.

Awesome... Thanks for the feedback. I shall change that out next. Is there a way to test the IC ... Like a normal transistor?

Yes, the transistors in the IC can be tested the same way a dedicated transistor would be tested. Which pins each emitter, base, and collector are connected to in the IC is specified on the schematic.

I like to test the pre-driver transistors using a logic probe with the board in the game and the solenoid test running.

Make sure your Altek MPU board is programmed correctly for the machine you have it installed in.

Look for bad female connector pins for the solenoid data lines on the MPU board connectors.
