Quoted from SLAMT1LT:I'm seeing a lot of people saying that theme doesn't matter, just as long as the shots are good and gameplay is solid.
At the end of the day, gameplay is all that matters and any decent coder can make any game phenomenal to play without the ball ache of licensing restrictions (see AFM, MM, FT... and hundreds of others).
If you prefer gameplay over theme, then let's drop the themes already.
Original IPs are much cheaper, have more creative ideas, are much more fun to play.. etc, etc.
Yeah but people don’t want to drop 10k plus on an unlicensed theme that they will maybe really like only after they’ve had it for a while and the newness wears off
Remakes are banking on the well deserved reputation of a handful of classics (lots of unlicensed games few want, few unlicensed games many want)
People open their wallets for themes that make them nostalgic for their childhood and/or they think it will resonate with their family.
Most people buying pins aren’t pinheads who’d be willing to try everything.
And while some licenses may be restrictive, look at a license like Godzilla and the fun they were able to have with that. It’s more of an issue of choosing a good licensor vs debating if original themes are “better”
(And that’s without getting into how licenses help provide a ton of content for the LCD screen and some nostalgic tunes that will lure people in)
