I finished my Star Trek makeover, so I am starting on the makeover of my Flash Gordon.

I personally don't care for the factory paint scheme, so I am going to update Emperor Ming to reflect a somewhat more modern appearance. A 2.0 upgrade if you will.

Some may like it, some won't. Hell I may not like it after I am done, but I guess that is way God made sandpaper, and paint, so we'll see.

More to follow.........

Looks good! I'll post more as things progress. It's been a lot of work.

Ok made some more progress today.

This stencil is the hardest one I have done, I have only done one other one, so I am not sure if that is saying much, but this is way harder than the Star Trek stencil I did. More little detail areas.

I am using a different paint, from what I used to do the Star Trek, only because I could not find the correct red. It is still Rustoleum, regular version I guess, but not the 2X stuff that Rustoleum makes. This stuff seems to be more runny and thin than the other stuff. Not sure what's up with that, but it is making everything a lot harder.

There is still 2 more stencils to lay down, so I have my work cut out. This stencil is from Pinball Pimp and it is only the 2nd one he has sold like this. So if you search around you might find the other Flash Gordon with this stencil kit. I have decided to try and stay with the Gold, Red and Black colors with a little bit of silver, to hopefully match the back box glass better. We'll see how it turns out.

I'll post more when I can..........

Well catastrophic failure today!!!

Was working on the front of the cabinet laying down the black, all was going good untill....... it came time to remove the stencil. A good portion of the silver lightning bolts came off with the stencil.

Needless to say, I am majorly bumming out so much so I can post a picture of it yet. Not sure what I am going to do.

Was able to get the back box done! I think it turned out pretty good. Not nearly as difficult as the cabinet.

On the cabinet disaster, I was able to remove what was left of the silver by simply using blue painters tape over the silver and it all pulled right off. Really disappointing. I would not recommend using the silver paint in the picture. It just would not stay on like the other paints pictured, not sure why.

So on to plan B on the cabinet......

I lost a little of my gold in a few spots too. In hindsight i wouldnt have used the metallic paint. I used the same rustoleum as you did.

The metallic doesnt bond well to gloss paint, i should have done a light layer of flat first maybe?

#12 5 years ago

Yeah I am not sure why the silver did not stick. The gold was not problem at all. So I guess I am just going with the gold and black only.

I will have to see how good I am at masking my own lighting bolts on the front cabinet, since I used the one for the silver, which was actually supposed to be white. I did not like the look of that.

Ok I got the 2nd stencil on one side of the cabinet laid down today. It was supposed to be sprayed white like shown above. Was going to use silver, but that did not go as planned.

So I went with gold, and did a outline in the circle with black to kind of get some contrast, or whatever you want to call it. Went pretty well.

The last stencil will be the hardest and should really be a challenge. Lots of small tiny pieces that will have to be removed without screwing up the gold and red. It will give the letters a blocked 3D look. Well see....

Ok moving forward I got the last stencil laid down and finished on one side of the cabinet. Overall I think it turned out pretty good.

Was a lot of working getting all the small vinyl pieces off. Took a lot of time, and that made the paint dry before I was ready, which caused some slight problems with stringy paint going back in the red color. I think most of it will clean up and I can touch up anything that is left. One more side to do and then I can start getting it back together.

Next post I should have the legs on, which have all been repainted and looking good, and back box installed.

Looks great....are you going to color match the side rails and/or legs to this color scheme or go original?

Well I have them painted original right now, legs that is, but I might change that depending on how it looks. Side rails I don't know???? We'll see.....

All stenciling is completed and I am real happy with the end results.

I still have a lot of work to do getting everything back into the cabinet and back box. I think it is a HUGE difference from what I started with in the beginning with the faded and kind of boring factory paint scheme.

#27 5 years ago

Very Nice...I normally don't like changing originals but this one is an exception...well done!!

And thanks for posting the original for those of us who didn't know what the original looks like...IPDB doesn't have any good cabinet pics...
