Just picked up my first Gottlieb yesterday. As a wise person on here said recently, “you don’t find pinball machines, pinball machines find you”.

Got some things to fix on it and the playfield has wear and planking, (not to mention the horrible small area of touched up backglass but I’m glad this gem spoke to me.

Quoted from Nihonmasa:

Finally having my first working EM!
(Never managed to get my far out running )
Have spotted one issue though, if anyone has an idea... At the start of a ball it will randomly (or so it seems) activate the extraball saucera and prevent the machine from switching from cross to circle or vice versa.[quoted image]

That’s a nice looking OXO. A game I’ve never played but always wanted to.

Congrats.

FWIW, the guy I bought the Flip a Card from has a pretty sweet looking Bowling Queen for sale too if your within driving distance of Charlestown IN.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Something about Gottliebs of this vintage speak to me if that makes sense, I knew I wanted a Domino and a Hearts and Spades just upon seeing a video of game play. The art, the sounds, the layout all come together.
[quoted image]

One thing that always goes through my mind when seeing the older beauties is just how many of them still exist. Your Hearts and Spades has to be pretty rare with only 615 produced from 1969. I wonder if you have 1 of only 100 left.

With some games like my SS Bally Eight Ball, you know there’s plenty out there with over 20,000 made but my new Flip a Card is one of only 1800 produced 50 years ago and it has over 106,000 plays on it. I’m purely guessing but I’d say there’s maybe 300 left worldwide? 250?

Thoughts anyone?

Quoted from DCRand:

I think about this with the old games too. Have a Spot Bowler, 1,000 made, and know there aren't that many of those left. Rescued a 1938 Swing, (1352 made, look up the back glass pics on IPDB, beautiful) from becoming a coffee table conversion, and could only find one other anywhere. Thankfully it is now in safe hands with Michael from PPM. Also have a 1966 Mayfair, with only 2120 made, probably not many left, and as one of Roy Parkers last games, need to keep as many of them going as possible. So appreciate that others think about the rarity and saving as many of these games as possible.

Beautifully said.

Road trip to Depot![quoted image]

I would think you’d be much better off going to your local Benjamin Moore or other quality paint store and have one of their more experienced paint guys match it.

As a Painting contractor, I’ve run into quite a few guys that are excellent at it. Of course, they are going to start with whatever you give them.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Actually I have little confidence for 3 reasons- Limitations of the scanner software, tool calibration and cabinet fade. However it does get you close and what I will do is take some good size blobs of the paint and will tint them up and down and proceed from there.

Good idea. Ultimately you are the one that has to be happy with it.

Quoted from phergott:

I didn't use any clear. Only carnauba wax. The process I use is on this thread:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/time-zone-playfield-restoration#p

I haven’t used it on a playfield yet but Meguiars Ultimate paste wax made my 10 year old truck look like mirrors after I waxed it last week. Never seen anything like it.

Quoted from gdonovan:

I use Mothers Gold paste wax on playfields, works great!

I bet it’s similar to Meguiars Ultimate. I tried Griot’s Garage Top paste wax on
2 playfields and my truck and it wasn’t in the same league as Meguiars Ultimate and cost $2 more.

Live and learn is my motto.

Quoted from MikeO:

Just picked up this Atlantis yesterday. While hard to believe, no, it wasn't in a fire.
Unfortunately, no, it isn't washing off either.[quoted image]

My Flip a Card went 50% clean with the Magic Eraser and 91% alcohol. As gently as I could till it became clear it was going to be a repaint on most of it or let it be and start the clear coat/ wax.

Not perfect by any means but I repainted almost the entire playfield by hand (brush) then clear coated and waxed. It was pretty rough when I got it and I still need to paint under the Mylar where the pop bumpers are but I’m going to wait till I try to rebuild the middle pop.

Now I need some ideas on what to do (if anything) with the bad touch up on the backglass.

That looks a million times better!

Thanks. Took awhile to match the green/blue, pink and yellow. Surprising what you can do with a set of good brushes and patience.

Heck, if they ate, I'd be broke!

Mine do eat. I just didn’t know it when I bought them.

Quoted from DCRand:

Just finished refurb. Looks good and plays well. Kept orig pop caps, but wanted something better looking. Original back glass in very good condition.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

It really looks great. I didn’t think anything could look as cool on this game as the dark blue pop bumper caps lit up but those clear red caps are awesome looking.

More fun than I thought it would be frankly.[quoted image]

Been on my wishlist for awhile. Good YouTube video by EM Pinman too.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Going to be a winter repaint project with extra lamps behind the backglass going to be added to light up the buildings.
Tough game! I'm looking forward to the challenge of refurbishment and beating it.
This will be my first game that will have splatter finish.[quoted image]

Sure is a pretty machine. Both the playfield and backglass. Looks to me like it would stand out in any lineup. Congrats.

Quoted from Graysonsdad:

That's a bit odd but great thanks for the heads up. Hopefully they deliver to Canada

It might not be the norm but I had never placed an order with them and ordered by email. I had my order 3 days later and didn’t have to pay up front. I created a thread on it yesterday.

I’m sure they deliver to Canada.

Magic Town in the line up!
Not sure I like this one yet, need to tune it up though before making judgment.[quoted image]

So you’re now a member of ‘The Middle Pop club?

Yes. It is a challenging game.

It’s unique to boot.
