Quoted from Pafasa:

Got it. Which do you enjoy playing more? The Replay or the AAB?

Between Lucky Hand and Jacks Open, I like LH the best. But JO is no slouch game either.

You can't always say the AAB is better than the replay version or vice versa.

2-atlantis
3 Jacks open
my top 3 2" flippers
1- slick chick
2-north star
3-kings & Queens
but every other one I have are very good also. IMO every wedgehead gottlieb made was a great player with the exception of a hand full ie. road race

I like the wedge head rut you are stuck in!

Quoted from PinballHelp:

The playfield is really nice - the inserts need to be leveled. What killed us is the first stage gear in the score motor lost a bunch of teeth, so I decided I was going to re-build the score motor gear box. I talked Steve Young into sending me the parts and I videotaped the whole process. In the end, the score motor was still a bit sticky, but I am not sure if it's because we made the gears too tight, or there's a finger or two that has too much pressure on the rotating plates - but the game now works, but the score motor is still sluggish... I'm pretty disappointed about that and I even showed my video series to Clay Harrell to make sure I didn't do anything wrong and he said my process was fine. One issue I had was one of the gears did not fit in the box and I had to modify it, so it's definitely an inexact science rebuilding a gear box. I can see why neither Clay nor Steve Young encourage others to do it. Anyway, that video series was shot - I'm trying to fully-solve the sluggish motor problem before I post it.

If you are that concerned by a used replacement score motor. They come up on ebay all the time. You should be able to get one for less than $60 at the outside. In fact, here's one right now:

I want to send some parts out to chrome, who does yours and how $$?

I had several of this same receiver channel rechromed a little over a year ago. I sent mine to Mike Chestnut in TN. I don't know if he frequents here but his work is outstanding. He is a pinball guy and his own games are exceptional to match his work. He has been doing WPC game habitrail plating for going on a decade now.

He charged me $35 each which included some repair on most of them where there was rust/pitting. They all came back amazing. I did have to cover the shipping on top of that both ways.

Let me know if you need contact information for Mike.

Here's a few of my others.
Gottlieb Royal Guard. This was a complete restoration.

Here it is as it was when I bought it.

Williams Ding Dong. Cabinet repainted and repro backglass

Gottlieb Top Card. Getting ready to do a playfield swap thanks to Adam Kovalsky

Bally Surfers. First game I ever owned, got it in 1971. Cabinet has some paint starting to flake but other wise still good. Playfield looks like the day it was made.

I've also got a Big Indian and a Bank A Ball that I need to get some better pictures of.

Your handle could be interpreted that you are in the Kansas City area. Is this true?
If so, do you go to either of the monthly pinball leagues?

Time to add some more photos. This should bump this post! Here is my Strange World, it is suppose to be HUO.

Not to burst your bubble but 60,000+ plays is a well maintained route game in my book. The condition on the coin inserts and coin door would be your best indicator along with the play meter. Unless they changed the play meter out at some time but then why would you do that to a HUO game.

It's an exceptional example, HUO or not.

Ron,

Which plastic do you need? I have the leftovers from when I put an NOS set on my SW from several years ago. But looking at IPDB I see I am missing the two slingshot(?) plastics.

I have the following:
B-17954 big one on left with five eyes on it. - split near bottom hole but all there.
B-17592 top left. split near hole on blue green end but all there.
A-17591 right side near outlane with one single eye - 100% complete.
A-17593 upper right side - bottom left corner chipped off.

If you need one of these you can have it. Just let me know.

Quoted from DirtFlipper:

What's the story on finding all the NOS stuff for it? That's gotta be unique.

Don Murphy had the playfield, plastics, and instruction cards. It was probably 8-9 years ago. Surprisingly some of the playfields were readily available. I got his last Gemini Playfield. The right timing I guess. I believe he had Golden Arrow and Hit the Deck playfields also that I passed on.

The backglass came from Mayfair. It was not perfect but was worlds better than what came in the game.

I was only on the tail end of the last of some of the NOS parts.

Super cool setup your friend has Mike.
Love the selection of EM pins including Black Knight.
Looks like it was a fun evening.
Ken

Thanks, Ken. It wasn't so much fun as frustrating. Getting the plastics into Black Knight was uneventful. But he had just finished shopping his Buckaroo which turned out great so I was playing a bunch of games on it. Looks great and plays even better - except I'm finding it hard to like Buckaroo. His game plays like a dream but it is hard as hell to hit the roto targets and win getting four in a row.

Mike O.

#2261 10 years ago
Quoted from DirtFlipper:

Sometimes on Buckaroo ya gotta let the ball drain between the flippers and sacrifice it to get the key '4' roto value, rather than trying to hit it. Really keeps you on your toes.

Getting the 4 was not that much of a challenge. On one game I got it on the drain. On others I was able to hit it. But being able to consistently hit other numbers was a real challenge. The openings at the roto numbers are too small and at the outlines are too big. I had a better chance of getting an A-B-C-D special than getting a four in a row replay.

I've owned a couple of decent Spin Outs, AKA the poor man's Buckaroo. From a play standpoint I like it better. The openings are fair. The shots through the upper side lanes flow better making the roto spins safer and easier. No way is it as pleasing to the eyes. Just seems more balanced.

Mike O.

#2266 10 years ago
Quoted from DirtFlipper:

Those dang Gottlieb Rotos! The playfield is dimpled for two post positions, and the openings can be made a bit wider. It's not much, but helps some.
But it's not an easy game by any means.

Thanks, Dirt. I'll ask Kevin if he has the posts positioned for the largest opening possible on the roto. Every little bit helps.

I finally picked up my ACD and Big Daddy today.
Pics of the ACD for now. Kinda bummed about the condition of the bottom of the cabinet, but I should be able to fix that up secure. Check out the strange webbing on the backbox. Pics of Big Daddy to come later.

Nice pick up Dane. Will we be seeing another "Super Shopping" thread? I look forward to it.

The cabinet is fixable to make it solid. Litterally making some thin strips and gluing them to the portion that is left to hold the bottom panel in.

While the webbing on the head is more dense, that was par for the methods they used back then. Sometimes it was heavy and sometimes it was light.

My Big Hit restore is done. Pretty happy with it. Still waiting for the nickel-plated metal channel just below the neck. I'm trying out Mike Chestnut's plating service to see how they look.

I noticed Dirt commented how lucky you are to have the top drop target playfield plastic in one piece. If you want to keep it that way I recommend you double ring behind the drop targets. You will thank me later.

Also, I had Mike replate a half dozen of the playfield glass receiver channels a couple years ago. I had him chrome plate them thinking that is what original was. Got them home and found they were originally nickel plated. The chrome plating stands out compared to an original. You mention nickel plating above. Is he going to nickel plate it for you? If so, I may send mine back and have them redone in nickel.

BTW, nice work on your game.

I did a full playfield swap on my Gold Strike the last couple of weeks. Found a fully populated GS playfield several years ago that had incurred a small fire on the bottom side and was taken out of service early in its life. Quoted from manitouguy:

now who has a good tip for getting acorns nicely to seat on the posts above the plastics

I have always struggled with the new ones that PBR sells and can't figure out the best approach to take. The new ones always struck me as being just a little too small in hole diameter to fit correctly on the posts and went on extremely hard - so much so that I was afraid I might over torque the post. For that reason I have never used new ones. I've had enough games come through here over the years that I have replaced the original PAL nuts with the rubber nuts on some of the games I've sold so I have some original stock for my keeper games.

That all said, using the 5/16 nut driver like CactusJack mentioned, I wonder if a PAL nut was originally intended to just be pushed straight down on the post for the first application. This would deform the inner race of the nut and possibly open it up so that when taking it off it would not be so tight. I've not tried this method but have wondered if it has any merit.

Here is my first, "300" from Gottlieb.
Needs a couple small play field spots touched up (where the ball lands from the two kick outs. And the back glass needs some spots repaired.

That's a pretty nice 300 you have there. I wouldn't worry about the spots at the kickout holes or the backglass(other than finding a better backglass to replace this one with).

Having to take what is arguably in 95%+ condition and get that extra 5% out of it is not what this hobby is about.

Keep the playfield clean and waxed, rebuild mechanisms as needed to get it to play better, keep a new ball in it and play it. Have fun.

Quoted from Shapeshifter:

Now, can someone please do a massively detailed playfield swop video?!

It's not really that hard.

Strip the topside of the existing playfield and clean and polish and rebuild those parts as necessary.

Flip it over and strip the bottom side of everything that is left. Pull or cut the ground braid staples but leave the ground braid in place (you will thank yourself for this one) and shift the glob of harness and parts to a piece of cardboard and then from the cardboard to the new playfield. Screw items back in one at a time. You'll be surprised how fast it can go.

The biggest thing is have all of your parts ready to go whether they be replacement, polish the existing, rebuild the existing, refinish the wood side rails, etc. That way all you are distracted with is getting each part back into its position on the new playfield.

As for the ground braid, staple it back down where necessary. You won't have to staple everywhere they did at the factory because the solder connections(that weren't there yet when they laid the braid down at the factory) will hold a lot of it in place.

#3296 9 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

I noticed some folks double-rubber the 2" flippers. What is the upside of doing this?

From an engineering/geometry standpoint, there are a few things to consider here.

1. The second, lower, ring closes the gap, just the smallest bit, between the flippers. So advantage to players' scores.
2. What I have noticed is that the original ring position sits above the ball centerline. Placing the second ring causes the flipper to strike the ball at or just below the ball centerline.
3. Not sure how much the geometry/physics come into play here but with only the ring installed in the original ring position I would expect a hit to the ball to push the ball into the playfield at the same time it is pushing the ball up the playfield. Obviously we see reams of evidence that this downward radiant of force has not caused overly intrusive damage to the playfield finish - among other things capable operators maintained their games so this did not occur. But a theory could be made that putting the contact point at or below the ball centerline can only improve the playfield durability.

#3308 9 years ago
Quoted from boilerman:

why purple not pink?

I reshot the pink/purple when I had mine with a more brilliant purple because that was the best match available in a rattle can. Frankly the deeper shade went very well with the playfield and backglass colors.

#3334 9 years ago

Nice work on finding the replacement Sea Ray plastics. They are a huge improvement.

As for trying to move the standoffs from your old plastics to your new plastics, I'd first try your hand at polishing up the standoff from the new plastics to see if you can make them shine well enough. Removing and reinstalling the standoffs from the old plastics does not come without risks.

If you have the new plastics installed with the standoff that came with them in place your playfield looks amazing.

New bumper caps and it will be the icing on the cake.

Have fun with Sea Ray - it is a challenging game.

Just finished a resto on my Pro Football prior to advertising for sale to enable space for imminent new arrivals Golden Arrow, Atlantis and maybe Spin Out.
When I got this machine it was pretty sad - poor cabinet, operational issues; flaking backglass; poor flipper power and a really badly mylar applied playfield (common on a number of Australian games).
So after a cab touch up, operational issues resolved (thks Kerry Imming & Dirt Flipper) including motor board, playfield & backbox rebuild; a bgresto backglass; flipper coil upgrade re Clays guide for this game and replacing the playfield this is now a fast & enjoyable machine-as always it will be sad to see it go.

gotcha... i have my jacks open single ringed, that seemed to be what the chart implied...
think i should double it?

Mine is doubled. I've seen too many Jacks Open/Lucky Hand broken drop target plastics to not double ring it.

I go by experience also. Where the drop targets are a square shot from the flippers, like the upper drop targets on Countdown, they get double rings. Where they are glancing shots, like the lower drop targets on Countdown, they can survive with single rings.

Other examples where double rings are indicated, as witnessed by the number of broken plastics at these locations, is the drop targets on Sky Jump and Big Brave/Indian.

I go conservative and double ring most of my Gottlieb drop target banks. Keep in mind I'm also running 99% exclusively original drop targets also.

_surfside.jpg (Click image to enlarge)

Nice game, Dan. I owned a Surf Side 15 years ago. The upper flippers and the roto target work well together. I'd go as far as saying it was the best Gottlieb multiplayer from the last half of the 60's.

Found it in western MI where my parents live. There must have been something in the water there. Four of the first games we found in that area were all great water related titles. Sea Ray, Surf Side, Surfer, and Fathom.

Have fun with it.

#3763 9 years ago

There's not much I've found in 60's multiplayer that has drawn me in enough to own.

Two games that I shopped out that stuck with me are Airport and Dodge City.

Dodge City is kept interesting and balanced with the kick out holes changing value and being worth 10 times when lit.

Airport kept my attention as well and I'm not normally a fan of vari target games. The vari target and its point scoring were a good mix of risk versus reward balanced with the other game scoring.

#3767 9 years ago

If you get a chance to play one play it.

Majorettes uses a lot of nudging and is a difficult AAB but is very satisfying when you earn extra balls.

Because of the nudging my hands get sore and I replaced the original lock bar with end caps with a 70's lock bar to make it easier on my hands.

#3777 9 years ago

I would like to add an AAB - if you could pick between Flipper Parade and Majorettes, which would you pick and why?

I'm not a fan of roto target games. So for me, I would choose Majorettes.

The only thing holding me back from picking a couple more up for my machines is that no one seems to sell the hinge for the door anymore and a rusty hinge doesn't look right with a new door (silly, I know, but I really notice it on my Flying Carpet that has one of those new doors).

You can always sand/polish a rusty hinge to make it look better.

#3920 9 years ago

So I'm leaving town for work for three days tomorrow and I should be packing but I'm really not in the mood so I decide to play a few games of Atlantis to get me motivated.

I'm playing and not really getting anywhere and I'm really working the game and getting even less. So after about ten games or so I decide to stop trying so hard and let it flow. The second game into this loose mode I'm starting to flow and at the fifth ball I just start hitting on all cylinders and get special and hit a couple replays right away.

I'm thinking I should trap the ball and break out my phone and take a picture to post tonight when the ball decided balance on a center lane wire form in the bagatelle area. You can see it in the picture below. I couldn't have planned it better.

I stop and take my picture and go back to my game. I finished with 109K points and a half dozen replays and all is well with the world.

Atlantis can hand you your ass but when you hand it back its a great feeling of accomplishment.

There are not many 70's machines I want. I would like to have a 72 Bally Fireball again like I had in the 90's. I would like to play a 1970 2 player Scuba because it looks interesting. Maybe people can chime in on how they feel about the game Scuba.

Scuba game play is good for a multiplayer. I don't have much time in on one personally but it gets decent reviews. The hard part about Scuba is finding one with a decent playfield and backglass. The ones I've seen seem to have gotten played a lot on route and the coloring and layout make the playfields prone to wear.

I have one in my parents basement in Michigan but have not gotten it up and running yet. It's about a 7 all around.

can anyone say HORDER!
I guessing one of those is one I sent you...

Yes, one of those is the cabinet you sent me.

I actually had accumulated two ACD's. One with a rough head and backglass and another with a great cabinet. The plan was to make the best of two into one. Then a third ACD showed up in exceptional condition. The third will be my keeper with only 29k plays on the meter. The best of the original two are just now getting play tested before it ships off to a collector in the northwest.

The funny part of the story is the third game which will be my keeper came with strings attached. I had to also buy his Asteroids upright video, a jukebox, a cheesy worn out foosball table, and a stop light. It took almost a year to get the deal consummated because he was asking way to much for the package deal and took that long for us to agree on price. And I still paid a premium for the ACD.

I just picked-up a 1960 Williams Blackjack a couple weeks ago with the shelf cabinet .I am enjoying the game .I like that you can score 21 for special , beat the dealer ,and get a high score to win free games and I like the kick of the 50 volt coils. That's a game you don't see every day.

Quoted from boilerman:

that was my understanding and maybe I misunderstood?
on blue note one of the top roll over lights are lit. if you hit the lit one will a plunger shot you get 10k but once you any point is scored it goes out not to be see until next ball.
I am not sure about bally or Williams games but I can think of one gottlieb em that had that.
maybe mike0 or dirt can chime in

If you are talking a discreet skill shot then there are limited Gottlieb EM games that offer this. The examples that come to mind quickly are both Soccer/Super Soccer and Top Score/300 where if you hit the rollover at the top a stand up target lights for a Special if you hit it before scoring any points.

But, to me, the skill shot on any EM is the shot that gets you more points than the other alternatives. While not a disappearing skill shot, they are skill shots nonetheless.

Here are several examples:

1. On Surfer/Surf Champ one rollover lane is lit for 2 bonus where the unlit lanes provide only one bonus. To me the lit lane is the skill shot.

2. On Jumping Jack/Jack in the Box the lit hole is the skill shot. It also ups the value of drop targets/bonus by 10x.

3. On Spirit of 76/Pioneer there is a less obvious skill shot which is the center C rollover since that is the only place on the game you can get it. It doesn't cry out skill shot but it is the skill shot nonetheless.

4. On Quick Draw/Fast Draw either the A or C top rollover is the skill shot to me due to the fact that the B rollover is duplicated at the inner rollover lanes above the flippers. These B lanes are much safer to get than the adjacent A and C return lanes because any ball that hits at the A or C return lanes can rattle into the respective outlane.

5. On Drop a Card one of the two lanes at the top is lit for extra points.

6. On Slick Chick your skill shot is one of the top lanes for SLICK or CHICK and 50 points. If you already have SLICK as you plunge the next ball the CHICK lane is your skill shot and vice versa.

7. On any single player Gottlieb wedgehead where you are trying to unlight a letter or number at the top to complete a sequence the skill shot is a letter/number that you need. As you collect/unlight the letters/numbers the remaining letters/numbers become your skill shots. Ice Revue and North Star and Crosstown and.......

I'm ready for the controversy to fly now.

Here is the start of the finish. My Ken Head repainted North Star cabinet came home today.

Thanks, Ken!!

image.jpgimage.jpg

#4441 8 years ago
Quoted from EMsInKC:

What about originality?

Most of my games are original condition. This one made the decision easy because the cabinet was painted over in mildly slathered on white enamel. There was no recovering the original finish so a quality repaint was a no brainer.

Had I found a second North Star with a decent original cabinet I would have just swapped them out. That's how my Slick Chick evolved.

#4459 8 years ago
Quoted from PinballFever:

I agree! It was stored in a basement for many years in non working condition. The tech replaced a burned out flipper coil, score step up units stripped and cleaned because they were seized solid, lots of corroded relay contacts cleaned, many failed lamps replaced, missing small bell unit replaced with a new one and two damaged legs replaced.
What's interesting is this "UTAH" pinball machine has flippers but they don't look like flippers. Can you find them in the playfield photo?

The flippers are the horizontal rings just above the out hole. Funny how they created their own configuration after the main manufacturers came out with the original 2" flipper design. Kind of like Gottlieb and Williams shared but United was not in the club.

Quoted from EMsInKC:

This game looked like it had been in a flood.

When you metioned this game and it being in a flood and you being in the KC area I wonder if it might be the game that I had and traded about 15 years ago. It was an Odds & Evens that I traded from a neighbor at that time. Story goes it had been totally submerged in two separate floods. The back glass was basically perfect which amazed the heck out of me where the playfield and cabinet showed the exposure it had received. I traded it off to a friend who, if I recall correctly, got it running and sold it. Did you get the game in Stanley? If so, it is the same game.

I have no idea how far gone it was or how far he went with it after he got it running. But the comment of straw and weeds doesn't make sense unless it is a different game and coincidence that two Odds & Evens were totally submerged in this area.

Let me know when and where you got it.

I made a video of my Jet Spin. Enjoy!
» YouTube video

I browsed through your video. Nicely done.

I noticed you have the urethane rings on the game. How does it play with these compared to new good quality bouncy white rings?

The only exposure I've had to urethane is on the flippers at the location we have league and, in general, I don't like them. They appear to deaden the ball action. They take spin off or just absorb energy. I've had to adjust my strategy for bounce passes where the ball is coming to one flipper and letting it bounce over to the other flipper. If it is coming slow where a normal rubber ring is on the flipper and the ball can make it to the other flipper I end up losing it as it doesn't transfer the momentum as well.

Well I knew that was bad, and stopped my self from setting up the visit. I want my first to be collector quality Gottlieb 3" bat AAB. That Sinbad would have been settling due to impatience.

Keep in mind more than one game will be inevitable once you get the first one. So I wouldn't let the fact that the Sinbad doesn't match exactly the criteria you set for the first game get in the way. If the price and condition and accessibility are acceptable, go for it. If space or funds are an issue then that's a different story.

Probably an original. I'm not aware of Shay running any repros on plastic. (UPDATE - It has been confirmed that Shay did repro the glass for this game on plexiglass)

On the other hand, it is not that unusual to find some original back glasses from this era on plastic. That is why they hold up so well. Not sure if it's because the ink bonds better or if the plastic expands and contracts at a rate similar to the ink.

Picked this old girl up over the weekend, a 1963 Gottlieb Flying Chariots. Definitely NOT a collector machine
Needs plenty of TLC, but is mostly there in terms of gameplay. It has some horrible relay buzzing going on, one of which gets to burning I think, so that's priority one. The rest is simple stuff - broken switch blades and the like. Cabinet is severely yellowed and quite beat up, but that's just character! Has a 20 Fr coin door, so apparently is a re-import. I may try to replace that with a US one if I can and maybe even a refresh/restore one day...
DSCN1537.JPG

If it has a 50hz score motor (standard voltage in France runs at 50hz) that would be the thing that I would consider replacing before I touched the coin door. Assuming you are in the US on 60hz power a 50hz score motor will run faster than normal, faster than a 60hz motor. The score reels and bells will be noticably faster. It's a pet peeve of mine regarding the couple of reimport EM games I have owned. Change out the motor to a 60hz motor and it will be normal.

And frankly, that coin door appears to be straight and should polish out decently with some Mother's Mag Polish.

The machine plays really well, the only small thing really wrong is that the right hand flipper is quite weak, any advice on what may be a possible cause of this would be greatly appreciated.

The first simple thing to inspect/service is the end of stroke switch. Make sure the points are clean and making good contact/wipe. Take a hard metal file to the contacts to make sure the surface is fresh.

I have owned a few Em's and many early SS pins and one thing I have noticed that is totally a mystery to me is the condition of PF's. I mean 95% of all the 30-50 year old Em's appear to have PF's that are in far better condition than most SS pins that are only a few years old.... I know that the older pins were coated using lacquer rather than the clear coat of today; that being said, it appears the lacquer was a much more durable and lasting medium so why would they move away from it???? Cost? Difficulty in application or what? Just curious is all. Does anyone have a definitive answer?????

My opinion is that it was a cultural shift that occurred at the same time pinball evolved from EM to SS.

Video games started coming out at the very same time and operators quickly found they could make more money with less effort routing video games and that started changing their priorities.

Before video games operators were inclined to maintain their pinball games well to keep them attractive, playing well, and earning well. As other amusement games came into fashion (video games) and the effort needed to maintain them went way down so did the consideration(efforts to keep a game nice) to keep pinball earning.

The advent of DC power to flippers and pop bumpers with the SS games contributed more wear to the playfields but we have all seen decent examples of early SS games where the operators did take adequate care of the games and it showed in their condition.

If you can, please ignore the picture below of the glorious original Gottlieb coin doors. I had started a post a couple of days ago to include them and thought I backed out of that but it appears they stayed in my cache and uploaded here. It was door day at my house this weekend. I have two El Dorados I'm working on and both doors cleaned up exceptionally well. Aren't they pretty?

This is my Balls-a-Poppin game, Bally 1956. After I found some small parts of this game at internet, I decided to build and assemble missing parts myself and reconstruct a complete Balls-a-Poppin game. I built the whole machine from scratch! (took me a year to complete project).

Nice work.
There has to be a great story behind this game that we would love to hear/see. Any chance you'd be inclined to expound on your game and the efforts you went through to create it?

Quoted from Mopar:

Man, you're right on top of things! We'll see. Maybe you'll come up with something for a trading piece..
I have the Majorettes set up, and also have both Slick Chick and Gigi, and if I was going to trade/sell
one, it would be the Gigi, although I never played either..

I actually got exposed to Majorettes, Slick Chick, and Gigi all at the same time at a collector's home over a decade ago. I found examples of all three since then and still own the Majorettes and Slick Chick. Sold the Gigi due to space and its condition wasn't the best. I have a friend that is close by that has an excellent Gigi so I can get my fix at his house.

I highly recommend not selling a game, and an iconic game at that, before you have ever really played/experienced it. Try and get some play time on it before you make your decision. I'd hate for you to find out down the road you regret selling.

So I got confirmation that my game is shipped out and headed here all the way from Germany. I want to give a shout out to Xerico aka Marcus for locating this game for me and passing on the lead. The game is one of the original 80 production "Rogo"s. This was a very expensive game to acquire and I have heard that the game play is awesome. I plan to have this game restored to all its glory and NicVolta has agreed to help me with the mechanics inside the game sometime late summer or early fall. Nice work Dave.

What bugs me is how nice that game was for previous owner to let it get so exposed. I know it happens but still......

I've had two games that come to mind like that where the interiors were clean enough to eat off of but the exterior had been exposed to long storage in a chicken coop in one instance and a damp sunny storage shed in another.

I understand rectifiers and diodes wired onto DC coils, but I don't get why I'll see capacitors or resistors sporadically wired in some places. It seems to be only on later games as well. Anyone have any insight?

Resistors have been used for driving 6V lamps off 25V solenoid circuits since at least the 60's. I've seen capacitors in the 70's for delay functions.

Very Sorry like I said, new to this. So what your saying is I can sand out the groove in the shooting lane (I was wondering what to do with this) Also how about the wear at the top arch?
Sorry, I do not know what a 2PAC is. It took me hours to get the playfield to look like it does now, I should have taken a before picture. Up real close there are some minor little specks but not bad for its age. The biggest thing on the playfield is the logo in the middle.

2PAC is 2 part auto clear paint.

For a High Hand that playfield is exceptional. They normally plank/wear around the card inserts and above the flippers. You have done a great job of cleaning the playfield and bringing back a nice shine to it. I would not bother with doing anything more other than a good coat of a high carnauba content wax and put it back together and play it.

There is no need to feel like it needs to be restored beyond the condition you have received it in.

I picked up a San Francisco and a Moulin Rouge a little over a year ago as learning objects. Neither worked.
They were cosmetically and mechanically in bad shape. I used them to practice playfield and cabinet restoration figuring that I couldn't make them any worse. Both got extensive playfield paint work and clear coats. The cabinets got stripped and repainted inside and out. Nearly every switch got cleaned, polished and adjusted. I remade all of the plastics for Moulin Rouge. Now that they are pretty much done I have happily discovered that I really enjoy playing them, too! (I wasn't sure that would be the case since I had never played a good dialed in example of either one.) Next up in the project queue - Old Chicago and Space Mission.

Nice find, Bill. Funny how 32000 plays is hardly anything.

Might I suggest you pull the coin door to identify the original pink/purple color of that stencil for the game, match it, make stencils and paint over the mostly faded to pink. Your playfield touchup skills would truly bring this game back to its original glory

#10564 6 years ago
Quoted from SilverWings:

Hi Mike! Yeah I'm seriously considering doing that. The pink does appear to have some fade to it, but very little. Reworking those areas would no doubt give the whole machine more "pop" and color contrast than it has now.
What kind of paint was used originally used for cabinet work? Enamel?

I’d call that more than a little fade.

I'm not sure what the original paint was. Maybe others can chime in.

I had a Strange World where the purple faded to about the extent of your C37. I made stencils and found a close enough rattle can match and repainted just the purple and it was dramatic.

The below is factory original.

I prefer games with a smooth flat playfield, but i am not too bothered if there is some slight cupping
but mostly i am too lazy to do anything about it, unless it is severe enough to be a big detriment to gameplay.

Quoted from spinal:

Yes, this discussion depends on the amount of cupping. If it's deep enough to stop the ball then something should be done - mild cupping is OK with me. Laziness is also a factor which I'll admit too when it comes to mild cupping. Mine don't have too much and I'm OK with them as they are for now.

Addressing the cupping without damaging the rest of the playfield is the key.

The enemy of good is better applies here.

Quoted from Mopar:

They are nice lookers, and I'd like to ask. From those five Wedge Heads in the photo,
it probably may vary, but for the most part, which is your favorite to play? (T)

Not that you asked me but, out of those five games, Slick Chick is my favorite followed by North Star.

#10613 6 years ago
Quoted from SteveinTexas:

My Slick Chick is beating me up lately. My last game on it I got a measly 250 points! Be careless with your flipper shoots or the ball will pass you down the middle. Its a great game, I am not a great player, bad combination.

Slick Chick will quickly school you on the bounce patterns you want to avoid.

#10616 6 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Of course S.C. is Replay, but does it play anything like Majorettes where you have to hit the
bumpers in order with the top one being the first to hit?

Somewhat. With SC, while you have to hit the pops in sequence to unlight them, you also have the targets to the right and left in the lower playfield that will give you all of SLICK or all of CHICK along with the center target above the pops that can give you SLICK, CHICK or SLICK CHICK depending on what is lit at the moment. Whereas on Majorettes you need to earn every single advance by hitting the pop bumpers in sequence. The goal is to get through five SLICK CHICKS to get the gobble hole lit for specials. On Majorettes every time you get all five of the red or yellow pops lit you get an opportunity to get an extra ball. Majorettes is more direct where SC is cumulative.

I quickly learned on SC that you need the pop bumpers to play strong enough but not too strong. I installed PBR's hot pop bumper coils and was afraid I would break something. The game almost played itself and was constantly hitting the target above the pops and earning slicks and chicks. I went back to the original pop bumper coils, where they were not playing strong enough, and took a few wraps off each and they are just right now.

For SC, the bounce patterns to avoid are the ones that leave the ball to die in the middle of the lower playfield only to drop between the flippers with no opportunity to bounce the ball back up to the flippers off the lane guide rubbers below the flippers.

I use some of this automotive grade double sided adhesive tape for the broken tab side of a Gottlieb pop bumper cap.

It also works on loose clip on dead bumper caps from the 50s and 60s.

It doesn't have to be this automotive grade. It can be the 3M double side adhesive foam tape also. It becomes reusable if the parts are clean to start with.

Just a 1/2” x 1/8” strip or smaller is all you need.

The flattened corners on the blue stencil that frames the backglass is out of place also. It looks to me that the off white surrounding the blue stencil has been repainted. It looks like the masked off the blue and cut the corners with straight lines instead of trying to mask the rounded corners that were on the original artwork.

My take is that it is another nicely maintained route game with some clean up to go into the home market. Hats off to the operator that kept his games this nice and you get to benefit from it and enjoy it.

Game had a delivery receipt to the address it was picked up from, dated 1981.
So home use for the last 39 years!

17,xxx total plays is low low low. I've never seen a JQ or JP that didn't have kick out hole wear. It makes me wonder if it had a fatal defect early in its operator life and sat until someone could figure it out and then it was too old to put back on route what with the solid state games that had taken over by 1981.

Nice find.

#11550 5 years ago
Quoted from DNO:

Agreed, under 60k plays is low imo.
Game was not working, and the main thing was 3 relays (2 in head, one below), all 3 had (multiple) switch blades in the wrong slots of the actuators, how that can happen is beyond me. I had to take them apart to put them in properly, and then she was good to go.
Wish it could talk, and tell the story.

I bought a gorgeous non working Surf Side 20 years ago which, since it was not working, was priced right. The story is it worked fine then he loaned it to a friend for a party and it didn't work after the party.

I got it home and opened it up and found cat hair everywhere and relay actuators messed up on more than half of the main board relays. Went through each relay and got all the switches back into the actuators and it fired right up. As I went through each relay I couldn't help but feel bad for the cat.

I spent more time with Krud Kutter and LA Awesome and the staining is just too much to put in the effort to try and clean it up. I spend a lot if time in an area to not be too aggressive and keep the graphics intact and it does not come out consistent. I’m resigned to get it repainted. The rest of the game is gorgeous and deserves a new repaint.

And then Ken sent me a picture of what it could look like and that did it.

Is this that "new math" they talk about?

Just finished installing a Wade playfield into my Quick Draw. I had this playfield clear coated with auto clear before installing. It plays different - not as fast. I think it needs to be broken in. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Quoted from Playdium:

That looks great, but why is clear coating needed on one of his playfields?

A few reasons:
1. A friend with easy affordable access to clearcoating talked me into it.
2. There are no star inserts to get screwed up on this pf so why not.
3. The key lines are the last layer of screening on these playfields and the paint for them sits high from the rest of the playfield. You can feel them. The clear protects them. This is probably overkill for home use but doesn't hurt.

You did get the colors, and everything else, right on your playfield. I'm still amazed at the quality of your work.

Quoted from stashyboy:

This is mostly all original cabinet paint. Very very minor touch-ups I have to custom mix. Both the red and blue mixing a couple of craft paints.

How much of the game is original and how much is new? Regardless, it's a very nice game.

Getting closer to wrapping this project up:
[quoted image]
There are a hand full of electrical bugs to chase down. Cosmetically, the apron and back box rear panel are the last major things. Once I get the rest of the to-do list for it finished, I'm sure I can get at least $5000 on craigslist for this rare collectable vintage mancave pinball game! </sarcasm>

Nice touch with the highlights on the bowling balls in the cabinet art. Classy.

Quoted from John_in_NC:

Have a line on a HUO Aztek. What’s a fair price? Needs minor repair owner is not technical, his father bought in 76 for $750 so the story goes. Going to fix maybe buy it but I’m a Gottlieb guy.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

From the appearance I would guess it is not HUO. The condition of the interior, especially of the coin door, would tell more definitively.

His recollection of the year they bought it and the price paid both could be off a bit.

$750 could be fair for that example. Probably less based on true condition of the interior and operating condition of the game.

Nice score.

What's the backstory to it?

If any EM technically inclined folks would be wiling to help me out fixing issues on a Spirit of 76 machine please go to: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/gottlieb-spirit-of-76-/page/2#post-5954853
One thing I am looking to confirm is the 00-90 relay (F) has 2 disks and no switches but when I look at this machine I am not seeing this. What I see is ......
[quoted image]
When I look on other sites like IPDB I don't see the above mech. So anyone familiar with this mech?
On the mech in question I see two wires, the wire with the green arrow appears to be orange/green and the yellow arrow is, really hard to tell, white/brown. Any idea as to how these two wires should be attached to the switch in question and as to why someone would disc them in the first place?
[quoted image]

That is not the match unit(00-90 unit) for So76. It resides at the bottom position on the relay rack to the right of the score reels as viewed from the rear of the game. It will have its own harness and jones plugs that will allow you to completely remove it from the game for ease of service.

Quoted from atpcfiaim:

I found this 1977 Williams Big Deal on Pinside Marketplace. I have been looking for one for about a decade but nothing ever popped up locally. It appears to be HUO based on very little wear on the machine. 36k plays, and everything worked with the exception of a few bulbs from the first start. Thanks to JethroP in SJC for a super clean example of Big Deal and a very easy sale and delivery.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Nice find. Glad you got one of your grail games.

36,000 plays is not home use only by any means. It is a testament to how well some operators took care of their games and that it wasn't abused after it did go to home use.

Nonetheless, a nice condition game is a nice condition game. Enjoy

Quoted from Playdium:

How does the ball respond on this playfield compared to an original?

In my experience they are fast with tons of ball spin until 100 plays or so. Then it settles down to nice consistent play.

Quoted from John_in_NC:

Waiting on backglass to finish fast draw. The unrestored pin is spin a card

I wasn't criticizing the condition of FD. Only commenting on the fact that it is a 4 player and the head stands taller than the rest.

I've always appreciated a row of wedgeheads and two player Gottliebs where the heads all are the same height.

Quoted from Garrett:

I didn't ask those questions. But it appears she did keep the playfield clean from debris. The ball did not have any corrosion on it either. Betsy was a player.

While it is a clean example, the 25 cents for one play dymo label looks like it was routed prior to dad buying the game for her. The coin gear is what will usually tell you if it truly is HUO or possibly spent time on route prior to her ownership.

Knowing when Betsy turned 8 would help to truly age the game.

Regardless, a very nice example.

#13121 1 year ago
Quoted from Garrett:

I wish I had bought it from a guy because I could have asked how old he was.

You could still ask her when she turned 8. What can she do? You have the game.

Quoted from Mopar:

Yea, but the numbers are larger than normal.
From the outside of the left zero to the outside of the
four is around 2", and they're like 7/16" tall. Almost as
if the 1st set of numbers were scratch out, and then these
stamped in. Wonder how other Pro Football numbers appear.

Did it come with a schematic? Is it a blueprint of a handwritten schematic? That is one indicator of sample games.
What number is on the top of the head? Does it match?
What number is under the tag on the brace behind the coin box? Does it match?
