Quoted from stashyboy:Is that a Wade Krause play field? (I did a restore last year like that, looks familiar)
Yes, it's a Wade PF, Shay backglass, PBR plastics set & drop targets, all new posts, pops, flippers, new coin door, etc... cabinet restored to original. Came out very nice, on it's way to Australia
Quoted from SteveFury:Wow John all your pins look fabulous! Those cabinets are so clean. Are they all original or quality refinished? They're wonderful either way!
Cabs were all repainted by yours truly, Matched all finishes to factory as best I could.
Quoted from hoov:Nice games John.
Was that hard selling that El Dorado?
After a heartbreak of ruining a decent original playfield trying my hand at clearcoating, I waited for Wade Kraus to finish his repop playfield for it for a couple years. By then I decided to go the whole nine yards and replaced everything. I spent way more on this title than I intended to. An opportunity came along that allowed me to recoup my expenses so I turned it into 1/2 a Hobbit. I actually prefer short flippers when it comes to EMs so it was not that hard to sell it. I learned a lot working on it so I'll always have that.
IMO they are not easier to work on but nothing to be afraid of. Generally very cheap to fix. 90% of the time the problem will be a gummed up stepper switch. Modern pins point you in the right direction, with EMs you need to know where to look.
Quoted from Gov:I generally do as well, the mechanical parts of a pinball machine for me are the easy fixes. I just have no idea how the EM's really work inside. Is there a good set of tutorial videos or anything that you guys would suggest when learning about them?
TOPS vids are very good. http://www.pinrepair.com/top/
This thread could go on for years, here's a few shots of the SilverBall Museum in NJ.

Quoted from Pafasa:Very cool, but why have two identical games set up for play side by side? Just curious...
One is an AAB one is not. Lucky Hand vs Jacks Open.
I don't own either, although I did have a Lucky Hand once. I personally like AAB versions for home use since games are free anyway. Making me really think about finishing my Flipper Clown restore (AAB)
Uno! I have one waiting for a restore. Never played it. Is it fun to play or just fun to look at? I think it looks way cool, relatively rare 2 player AAB.
// Error: Image 110732 not found // // Error: Image 110733 not found //
Quoted from Shapeshifter:Looks amazing.
What is the game like to play? Never played it.
Has great reviews on IPDB, I think I tried a couple balls on it at the silverball museum in NJ but have not really played it yet. I bought this in parts & pieces, a project someone else started 5 years ago that lost interest.
I'm regressing on my collection. I started off with a 70s EM, jumped up to DMDs cause I played one and it was FUN but lately I have been going back to the 70s, now most my EMs are from the 60s but I think I would love to have some 50's wood rails. That Capt Kidd looks awesome!
I just picked up another "some day" project. My first wood rail! Got it cheap, hate to ruin it by paying retail for shipping. Something does not sit right when a pin costs more to transport than buy.
It's in Chicago, no idea how I'll get it home. LMK if you can help!
Not much missing that I saw. PF glass and left rail and rollover buttons are all I see missing. It does sorta play, he sent a vid. Gobble holes were taped over so the ball would not fall in so I'm not sure what's up with that. Guess I'll know when I get it.
Edit: I see, metal lane guides, a couple posts also missing. Someone moved the bottom lane cover to the top lanes and banded the center outlane on the bottom to make the game easier. All will be easy to replace (I hope) If not, I'll make do with plastic until I can find the correct ones. sunshine-example.jpg
Quoted from boilerman:odin requested pics of the sunshine listed in de
Thanks for posting these pics! Looks like I will need to make these metal lane guides for the Sunshine I picked up today. I HOPE they are stashed inside but what are the chances of that?
Those chrome guides add some real bling.
Quoted from boilerman:what this old thing?
Nice playfield but your pop skirts are on wrong..

Quoted from boilerman:"Nice playfield but your pop skirts are on wrong.."
I know, I put the skirts down because I was out of mylar rings. it was changed to points up when I got the mylar.
that way I know they needed protectors
You were anxious to put it together if you went through all that. Nice game!
Easy to see o-din's is original but may have a little touch-up. Very nice. That playfield overlay is nice. Who makes that Boilerman?
My latest project, a rare bird. Mata Hari EM. (not mine and not for sale)
If you believe the counter, it has 999,969 games on it. The drops are wore out, won't reset, probably have not reset properly for 50,000 games based on the wear. I'm putting in a new playfield with new plastics, rebuilt the pops, flippers, drop target assy, & slingshots. Should be good to go for another million games.

Vic, I thought I had an EM addiction problem, thanks for making me feel better. Super collection and nice work keeping all them bulbs and switches working.
Quoted from Vic_Camp:Boilerman that's a nice original Volley and so clean inside.
Here is a pic of my third gameroom on the 5th level of the house. The room is 20 x 20 and has a bathroom and small refrigerator. There are 7000 45 records and 1500 albums in my collection.pool table.jpg 19 KB
9' pool table on the 5th level, your friends must love helping you move your stuff.
Quoted from Shapeshifter:I also like doing this. I also like taking all the metal bits under the apron and the metal piece that holds the glass, and having them re-chromed. Just like the way the light hits and reflects. Not really bling just makes them pop. Only worth doing if keeping for a while, as most people wouldn't notice really.
This is the CC metal piece at the back - re- chromed.IMG_7251.JPG 166 KB
I want to send some parts out to chrome, who does yours and how $$?
To remove the rails, use those disposable putty knives WalMart sells in the auto section I think. It's a pack of 3 different sizes in red. Find a spot you can squeeze one in and tap it under, work your way along the rail being careful not to put too much pressure on any one area. I have done a dozen machines like that with little to no damage to the rails.
Quoted from RyanClaytor:Thanks, John! Any tips on re-adhering them?
Um.. spiral nails?
Quoted from Pafasa:They are actually pretty easy to get out once you get them started. "Unscrew" them by grabbing the head with a pliers. Of course you will want new ones because you might chew up the heads.
http://pbresource.com/tools.html
GTB-FA-701
About 3/4 down the page in the "Commonly Requested Tools Box Parts" section.
I pull them with a small claw hammer after prying the rail with the plastic putty knives (tapped under the rail with the same hammer) creates a little grab space. I rarely damage a nail, end up polishing the heads and reusing them most the time.
I picked up a flipperless 47 United "Mexico" AMAZING pf, will clean up like new, no swirl or checking at all. I do need some help on it though. Anyone here have a 40s United I can talk to? The reset stack has no latch or coil, there is a coil mounted next to the stack going to nothing. I suspect a hack for avoiding tilt? Not sure but it won't stay powered up and the hold relay won't stay on. No schematics ;( PM me if you can help. Thanks!
Quoted from swampfire:A few pics were already posted to the Jumping Jack thread. I call this series "Pretty in Pink".
VFN JJ! Did you do the restoration?
Quoted from EMsInKC:Good luck finding a Surfers. With the low production number they're pretty rare.
The answer to your question is easy. Grand Prix. After that, it's a tossup between Jet Spin and Surf Champ (which as noted I already owned and somewhat regret selling) and after that, maybe a 60s Gottlieb multiplayer.
I sold one for $50 a year ago, not my cup of tea. It was a project though with a trashed BG.
Quoted from Shapeshifter:Not mine but got a shock seeing 2 woodrails in an episode of Friends! 4 Belles and Roto Pool.

Ahh Hollywood. They always put EMs in when they want to have a pinball prop. When is the last time you saw a woodie on route? Don't get me wrong, it happens but you'll see 1000 to one modern pins. I sold a restored Spin Wheel to a local bar owner. They're loving it.
My playfield was nearly perfect as well except all the center inserts were loose and there was some cupping. I reglued all the inserts and clearcoated with lacquer very fun game. And worthy of a restore in my opinion obviously. I traced the old cabinet art on plastic and used it as a guide to mask off and paint. I would be happy to share it with you. Send me a private message and I will mail you what I used. Ron web makes these back glass reproductions excellent.
Quoted from John_I:Does that neon reflect on the playfield glass?
Yes some, DMDs all had invisiglass. Wired the room all with switched sockets and neons are WiFi enabled, “hey google turn off arcade lights” dims the room instantly .
Quoted from John_I:1 in 11,111
Actually.. 5 pins = 5 digits = 100,000 possible numbers from 00,000-99,999. There are 5 X 9 = 45 possible combinations of numbers containing 4 5s. (05555, 15555, 25555,35555,45555,65555,75555,85555,95555...50555,51555,52555.....so on and so on to...55559. making that 100,000/45 or 1 in 2,222.22222
One might argue 55555 qualifies as having 4/5 5s making the odds 1 in 2,173.91304 but that would be over thinking it wouldn't it? LOL
Quoted from EMsInKC:Here's a few of the Gigi I restored. Playfield is still in progress being done by another Pinsider[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
Who’s doing the playfield and what are they doing?
Have a line on a HUO Aztek. What’s a fair price? Needs minor repair owner is not technical, his father bought in 76 for $750 so the story goes. Going to fix maybe buy it but I’m a Gottlieb guy.

The condition of the interior, especially of the coin door, would tell more definitively.
His recollection of the year they bought it and the price paid both could be off a bit.
$750 could be fair for that example. Probably less based on true condition of the interior and operating condition of the game.
Passed on it I'd call it above average shape but 50K games on counter says it's much more than HUO. Got it playing advised owner to take no less than 750 for it.
Latest restore.

Quoted from Playdium:How does the ball respond on this playfield compared to an original?
Plays fast but not markedly different to a clean & waxed playfield. If the flippers were dc, you’d notice it more I think but these old ems don’t have the kick a modern pin does.
Quoted from Mopar:The last couple days has been a little wet, so I went through the Hyde Park which is
one of the very few Gottlieb true 2 Player AABs..
She plays nice and was a breeze to work on. Didn't have to make multiple trips to the
barn hunting down parts..
The backglass is tight but missing a little paint here and there, so I'll be clear vinyling
it and then touching her up..

I restored a Mayfair a few years back. The unusual gameplay is fun for a change of pace. Last Roy Parker art package.

Nice line up.
Waiting on backglass to finish fast draw. The unrestored pin is spin a card
Did a 1000 mile round trip for this project yesterday. Just sweaty enough to require a complete restore with great cabinet hardware and the playfield will clean up perfectly. I’ll restore and repaint the cabinet, clearcoat the playfield, new backglass. Going to be sweet. Finally a cabinet refinish that’s not a red white and blue.

Looks sharp. I suggest Montana marble effect spray for webbing if you are using rattle cans like I do. Comes in black blue red and silver I believe. I was using Montana spider effect but it’s more difficult to work with it comes out so fast.

It looks like it's got good bones and will clean up very nicely. Why not keep such a great machine original? Does the pf need touchups? Is the cabinet art trashed?
I like restoring pins as much as playing them & my preference is full restore on my pins. I have 2 very nice originals and neither of them are safe if I get a wild hair. As for this one, the bottom panel of the cabinet is delaminated, cabinet integrity not great so that’s got to be done. Mechanically it’s been in storage for decades as can be seen by the state of the petrified rubber. Likely steppers all bad, sockets bad by now. It’ll need a thorough cleaning so if I’m going in I’m going in heavy. The playfield will need very little touchups but once done it’ll need clearcoat. Test cleaned and ball swirl is coming out. The legs are salvageable and the door is fantastic.

Very nice restoration!
Quoted from Pinballprowess:If you think 'that' looks nice.... you should have seen it before it got repainted.
I can imagine. When I restore a game, the sweatier the better.
BeforeRestore 006 (resized).jpgbeforeafter (resized).jpgQuoted from Pinballprowess:Yes, well... I'm glad you didn't take my comments to heart.
First post was actually serious but the second... just ribbing you a bit.
But I hope you... and others here... will at least 'consider'...... keeping games with great original cabinet paint... as is.
Now, I'll be the first to say it... sometimes the paint is so monked up and dilapidated, you just don't have much of a choice.
All I'm saying is... please don't be 'repaint happy'.... that's all.
You lost me, not sure how that was ribbing, I must have missed something? Most the projects I get are trashed cabs with good potential. That's where I get the best deals and the most satisfaction after restoring.

Nice work, quite ambitious.
Quoted from Silverstreak02:It’s not an overlay. I repainted 95% of the playfield with an airbrush and then made water slide decals. It was my first time doing a playfield and my skills are limited. Since then I’ve gotten better, but still struggle to find the exact font. I usually end up finding something close. This is what I started with.

Great game. Will always be a desirable title.
Quoted from Flipsteen:Must be raining Bank-A-Balls. Brought this home today from moving sale. Seems to be in good shape with very nice backglass. All the little pool balls are in place. Says it was lightly played and everything works and scores.

Just debugged my deep restored Fast Draw to 100%, every feature switch and bulb working as it should. I restored it a year ago along side my Quick Draw. Put all my effort into perfecting the two player and just now giving the 4 player its due respect.
