Spot Bowler: Found at estate sale, was painted blue, had scratched three piece acrylic playfield "glass", old varnished play field, hard brittle rubber, etc. Stripped varnish, blue paint, replaced rubber, polished all metal, cleaned all plastic, replaced ball shooter cover. Now for the electrical work......

Thanks shapshifter for lead on score card downloaded it this morning. But I am also looking for the artwork on the wood under the score card. Not talented enough to paint it, and trying really hard not to screw up my spot bowler with bad paint. So looking for a high resolution image of this area, thinking I could laser print it on to photo paper and gently spot glue it to the varnished bare wood. Have even sent private messages to a couple Spot Bowler owners, with no luck yet. Any ideas?

#7435 7 years ago

Thanks for the link Shapshifter. Unfortunately, had seen those pics, but they are cut off on the part I need. And probably aren't hi def enough if downloaded from the web site. Think I need someone who has a SB to take a good hi res pic of the score card area and email tome directly. Have emailed / messaged three people who have Spot Bowlers, but no answers yet.

Question re Big Hit. Found one here and they are asking $300. It's a big project, cabinet paint very rough, and multiple electrical problems, but playfield and back glass are pretty good. I just don't think worth $300. Any input?

Glad to hear 4 Square getting some positive comment. Was my favorite game at the the roller rink as a teen, and was the first game I bought when getting into this hobby just over a year ago and will be the last game I sell. It is not in perfect condition, some small back glass issues, and has the stupid white latex cabinet paint job. I am hoping to strip the latex someday. But play it 2 to 3 times a week.

Recently picked up this 4 Roses. BG is pretty rough. But the reverse wedge looks good between my two wedges. Cab was covered in decades of nicotine stains, pf pretty dirty and because game so difficult to win, someone had put posts in outlines, in three places!!!! Also had totally frozen red side stepper unit, and a couple bumper issues. Still missing chime unit and bell from backbox, so looking for replacement, but not critical now. Overall nice machine and fun but frustrating to play.

Quoted from NicoVolta:

4 Roses is cool but violent nudging is necessary to save the ball from those tiny outlanes! I took the tilt off... helped!

Yep, finding those "tiny" out lanes are like giant vacuum cleaners. And while tilt not off, the only thing left hanging through the tilt mech hole is the wire below the bob.

#9657 6 years ago

Until you have played this one, don't judge taking the tilt off. At least that is better than the previous owner of my game who put plastic posts with rubber rings covering half the out lanes.

#9663 6 years ago

Nico, sorry to get you in trouble. Lol but I understand, thought my Drop a Card was one of the hardest games to play ( certainly has the most frustrating problem to track down ) but 4 Roses definetly more challenging. Even with tilt at least sensitive setting. Of course like scoring a goal in Soccer, when you do well, feels great.

#9668 6 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

I'm not too fond of games with wildly inconsistent scoring regardless of skill level. Generally the pros should be able to distinguish themselves most of the time except for the occasional breakout game.
Wasn't happening that way on 4 Roses. Too many 300-400 scores for the pros, and 600-900 for beginners. Is this a pinball or a slot machine?

I have only had the machine for about a month, and with all the "make it easier" modifications have just this past week got the machine playing like originally designed. But finding that scores vary wildly and haven't "won" a free game since. Will keep it for a while and see how I like it long term. It does look good between the two Gottlieb Wedge heads.

Picked up my first Bally machine Saturday. BG in great shape, PF has some wear areas and some idiot put home made posts in the outlanes that are already gone. But other than the flippers being a little soft, plays well.

Just finished fixing up Bally Time Zone. Unfortunately I don't have the skills or time for full restoration. But rebuilt pop bumbers, and installed new caps and skirts. Cleaned and waxed pf. Fixed bad flipper and a few other elec issues. Cleaned 50 years of smoke stain from cabinet and waxed it. Repaired some cabinet delaminating. Removed and polished all metal on the pf. Cleaned score reels, and behind back glass. Triple thicked back glass and touched up 1 small area. And for those purists out there, sorry didn't change out the colored LED bulbs a previous owner installed. Kind of like the color. And yes, the legs are painted silver, not Bally gray. Sorry.

Posted these pics in the wood rail thread, but thought some of you non - wood rail em fans would appreciate these two games. Just picked them up last night. I know as pre WWII flipper less they aren't worth much. But thought they were great looking enough to save from the possible coffee table conversions that might have been in their future. BTW looking for a good home for Triumph, as can't keep them both.

Yesterday was a good day, picked this great looking Mayfair up in the afternoon. Went to the first stop on the Train, Hall & Oats concert tour, here in Sac, last night with my honey. The Mayfair had been restored about 5 years ago according to the family selling it. And looks like it had. No project pin here, just need to clean and wax the play field and enjoy.

Lol no, concert just made a good day better.

Just curious if your Backglass is glass or plexi?
Or maybe a Webb repro?

It’s original glass. Looks like has been triple thicked, and touched up in one area.

Long time no see. Not a machine but working on a new interactive guide to beat my old one as a part of a much healthier and less controversial comeback of my true self. Coming back to help out around the EM tech forums and staying away from any general or controversial discussion.

Otaku,

Want to thank you again for your help today with my Hokus Pokus post, it really helped and appreciate your knowledge and willingness to help a still relative newbie sort through learning the trouble shooting and repair side of this hobby, or as my wife says, addiction.

Turned a down and brown Jack in the Box into a proper looking machine. Several nights striping dark chocolate (or turd if you prefer) brown paint off of back box and lower cabinet and found what was surprisingly a pretty great looking original paint job beneath. And before the paint stripping, spent a week or so tracking down and fixing the electrical problems including among a number of others, a couple of hard to find broken leaf switch blades causing no 10 point scoring, and the upper red / yellow scoring kick outs not to switch back and forth when the pops fired. Didn't take a pic of the entire machine brown, didn't want to memorialize it. Now if the back glass wasn't faded, it would really look great.

Quoted from Sea_Wolf:

One thing that always goes through my mind when seeing the older beauties is just how many of them still exist. Your Hearts and Spades has to be pretty rare with only 615 produced from 1969. I wonder if you have 1 of only 100 left.
With some games like my SS Bally Eight Ball, you know there’s plenty out there with over 20,000 made but my new Flip a Card is one of only 1800 produced 50 years ago and it has over 106,000 plays on it. I’m purely guessing but I’d say there’s maybe 300 left worldwide? 250?
Thoughts anyone?

I think about this with the old games too. Have a Spot Bowler, 1,000 made, and know there aren't that many of those left. Rescued a 1938 Swing, (1352 made, look up the back glass pics on IPDB, beautiful) from becoming a coffee table conversion, and could only find one other anywhere. Thankfully it is now in safe hands with Michael from PPM. Also have a 1966 Mayfair, with only 2120 made, probably not many left, and as one of Roy Parkers last games, need to keep as many of them going as possible. So appreciate that others think about the rarity and saving as many of these games as possible.

Now that Space Mission is done, except for the missing post rubber. Picked up the next project, 1952 Twenty Grand. The play field was stripped by the previous owner. I just cleaned the PF with Naptha and a microfiber cloth. Someone has done pretty sketchy touch ups. Don't know if I should start a new thread, or post question here. There is no clear coat, and I am concerned about harming original paint trying to strip bad touch up. Could use some advice.

You funny guy!
It is without a doubt one of the most difficult EM pins I have played, I enjoy the challenge. Have broken 2000, once.
This round I managed to light MAGIC CITY and collected on it. Hitting the top most rollover on the skill shot is worth 50 points and lights the bumpers and is key to good scores.[quoted image]

OK, I just have to ask. Am I the only one that thinks the fountain looks like something you would by at an adult XXX toy store?

Its the standing therapy they need, though I have caught a few playing from wheelchairs!

Btw, there is a great wheelchair flipper button box that can be built if you wanted to really let your wheel chair bound patients play. Couple of threads on it, or PM me and I will send pics and description of the one I built.

Wow, that's great. Wouldn't fit well in my game room garage. So guess will have to live with the flipper button box. But great that your patients have that available. Thanks for the pic.

Quoted from John_I:

I decided to make a playfield protector to prevent any further damage. I have a good method for making the protector, so that is not a huge project. I did a little touch up on the playfield and to fix the areas under the pops, I made some sun patterns like the ones already in the art other places on the playfield and put them under the protector. All in all the playfield looks nice now even though I left a lot of patina rather than repainting large areas. The protector makes it shiny, smooth and fast.

Hi, any chance of sharing the playfield protector secret?

#12390 3 years ago
Quoted from John_I:

It is not too difficult if you have the right tools and avoid the wrong tools. Work on a thick (3/4) plywood as backing because most of the cutting involves punching and the required a good whack from a hammer. For holes, I use a punch and NEVER a drill. I have a punch kit for all sizes. For long cuts I use really nice scissors (Fiskars). For short straight cuts I use a set of nice wood chisels. Don't try to use a knife. Using a combination of tools, each one right for the cut you need, it will end up really clean looking.
Here are the basic steps for an EM.
- Strip the playfield leaving only the wood rails if possible.
- Measure carefully and cut the protector so it covers the playfield and a little way around into the shooter lane. Use only .020 polycarbonate material. Don't use the thicker stuff. Leave the protective layer on until the final installation and then peel it off.
- Mark sure the protector can move a little bit in all four directions say an 1/8" or a few mm and mark two or three holes where there are posts on the playfield. Punch small holes to allow installing posts. The purpose here is to hold down the protector good and firm.
- Trace all of the lines and holes that you want to cut with the plastic held firmly in place. Remember to leave a small gap around everything on the playfield. The final protector should be able to move back and forth freely a little bit or it will bow up when it expands from heat.
- Cut out all of the lines you have traced and return the protector to the playfield and screw it back down again with the posts. Make sure you didn't miss anything.
- Now enlarge the holes from the hold down posts you have been using so the posts no longer go over top of the protector.
- Begin repopulating the playfield and make sure nothing prevents the protector from being able to move. You might need to return it to the bench a dozen times to trim here and there.
The PETG sheets may be hard to come by right now - 0.020 is the key. Nothing thicker. Order a few sheets and they ship them flat instead of rolled...

Machine plays fast and fun to play. After restoring many GTB machines I really enjoyed working on a Bally and have quite a deal of respect for their manufacturing design particularly score reels which are well designed and easy to service and maintain.

And this is why I never call my work a restoration. I bow to your skills.

Just finished Jive Time refurb. Wasn't a total wreck, but needed a lot of love. Playfield before pic, cabinet was about as bad, and after pics. I know not a loved game, but cool late 60's (yes I know it's a 1970 game) artwork, if you like orange.

Quoted from seeburg220:

Love some Jive Time. How did you stencil to repaint the cabinet and what type of paints did you use? I need to do mine.

Believe it or not, I didn't stencil. I am probably a little crazy, but mix acrylic craft paints to match color, then hand paint - usually with about a 1/2 brush - all of the touch ups. Which in this case was most of the cabinet. Probably spend more time than if I completely repainted the cabinet. But it retains some of the original paint and fuzzy factory stencil paint lines. Generally looks good from about 3' away, but not as great close up. You can kind of see that from the coin door pic below. And orange sucks, usually takes 4 to 5 coats to cover properly.

I found this 1977 Williams Big Deal on Pinside Marketplace. I have been looking for one for about a decade but nothing ever popped up locally. It appears to be HUO based on very little wear on the machine. 36k plays, and everything worked with the exception of a few bulbs from the first start. Thanks to JethroP in SJC for a super clean example of Big Deal and a very easy sale and delivery.

Quoted from Sea_Wolf:

I feel your pain. You’ll get there though.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Sea_Wolf, that sounds like a great strategy. I've got 2 machines right now. I was thinking just last night how much fun it would be to add a couple of cheap EMs and then some cheap early solid state machine to get up to 5. It would be a lot of fun to invite people over and have little tournaments. My space is limited until my wife closes up her florist shop in the unfinished part of our basement. Then I'll be able to establish my lineup! haha.

Be careful, they breed when you aren’t looking. I went from one to two in 4 days, to 5 in 6 months, to 15 now with two loaned out to friends because I am out of space. They are like giant Tribbles.

Quoted from thetylander:

That’s an excellent idea!! We may try that when everyone in the house gets better at playing Super Spin. Currently we have it set to Add-a-ball but with the bonuses set higher before it will light the specials. Only the Wifebot regularly lights the 100,000 light, but she sucks at playing Pinbot, so it all evens out.
Funny how this old Gottlieb got more plays than the solid state machines when my sister and her two sons showed up. It was the only machine with two player games started every time. “It’s more fun to compete!” as they say.
BTW I’ve been calling my wife “Wifebot” partially because she is a well oiled machine when it comes to EM stuff and because her first (successful) work on a SS machine was Pinbot. She thinks it’s rather funny when she’s deep in a pinball machines guts and I say in a monotone “Wifebot Circuits Activated!”
She went to look at a broken Flipper Cowboy machine for sale the other day. The older couple didn’t want to sell it but it wasn’t working. They called a nearby shop who wanted $100 just to look at it and $75 an hour labor. More importantly, that place wanted them to bring it in to have it looked at. No house calls. The place also offered to buy it from them for $300! So they said no and advertised it themselves for $750.
She heard their story and that they had the machine for nearly four decades.
She climbed in, did her magic, and got the machine up and running in a couple hours.
She refused to take any pay for the work. “I didn’t replace anything, should you charge someone to straighten a bunch of bent switches and tighten some switch stacks while drinking their coffee and chatting?” She said.
She also told them to take their ad down and keep their pinball machine, but if they ever want to sell it or if anything stops working in the future to call her first.
She truly believes good deeds have their own rewards and couldn’t take advantage of their situation.
I agree totally with her, unless it’s a Bride of Pinbot or Black Rose, then the pinball machine better come home with her!!!
On Halloween night she took a picture of Super Spin because our nephew, in his early twenties, thought the machine looked disturbing and creepy when lit up all alone in a dark game room. After the picture was sent to everyone, she turned off the machine and came upstairs. About five minutes later we heard it start a game…
I went downstairs pretending to be brave because nobody else would and unplugged the surge protectors for all the machines from the wall and tried not to run back up the stairs.
Of course everyone was a bit worried it was haunted, but …
…do I ruin the scary story???
November 1st in the daylight, of course, Wifebot went to look Super Spin over. She came upstairs minutes later with a huge grin.
“I must have double pushed the power button after I took the picture and the start button switch blades were almost touching each other. I probably accidentally bent it when I was cleaning the coin mechs.”
Ugh!!! Well, I personally was never afraid!!!
Now let me un-suspiciously wash some laundry…[quoted image]

Great story!!!!! And lucky guy with a pin loving wife. Mine tolerates well, and funny, her one game ---- Bride of Pinbot.

#12923 2 years ago

Wifebot was not always a pin loving wife, Val was into a lot of hobbies, but early on when we first discussed it, she said that if we were to buy something big and electronic and stupid, then she really preferred Arcade machines.

Thanks for the great response and story. If we were younger and life were a bit different she might join more. I’m 65, and she is a bit younger. Or as we usually tell people, waaayyyy younger. Been in the hobby about 6 years. She was in an auto accident in 2016 and now gets light triggered migraines. And has some back issues so bending over machines is not a good idea. Some days she can play for half hour or so, others has to leave the room right away if anyone is playing. She does help me get colors right when touching up, shoos me out to the garage to work on machines or play when she knows I am stressed. And even supports the plan to build a pin shed in the back yard to expand the collection. So I’m pretty lucky. Thanks again and have fun with your pins.
