Quoted from Electrocute:

Wizard! was the game I could play all day long off one quarter.

Wizard was pretty easy too. But I think Captain Fantastic might have been the easiest to win a special on. Between those two and Joker Poker I could stretch my pocket change pretty well back then when it wasn't that easy to come by. That's what we did. We played the games that were easy to win on.

#7892 7 years ago
Quoted from ZNET:

I rarely complete all of the drop targets

It was getting so on almost every ball I was completing all the drop targets. Of course I had had a lot of practice. On the SS version I could do it two or three times a ball. That doesn't leave much of a challenge.

When my Big Daddy arrived. I found it to be a much better and challenging game, and better looking too, so I decided it would go in the spot where EM Joker Poker resided and it remains to this day. And the guy that wanted that JP so badly now has his treasure. Everything happens for a reason, and I have no regrets at all.

All those other machines in the background are now history too, but Big Daddy remains. Ready to take on all comers.

#7895 7 years ago

That Saratoga and Shoot The Moon are both beautiful machines. I've never had the pleasure of playing either one.

Interesting bit of history from IPDB-

'Saratoga' was the first machine to feature an active bumper, referred to in the manufacturer's flyer as a thumper bumper.

A nice feature that found it's way into quite a few machines after that.

Quoted from boilerman:

i only played it once at a show so i don't know how the long term game play would be. but the art is killer

It sucks when the gameplay is nowhere as good as the artwork. I couldn't tell you, I didn't play it.

#7921 7 years ago

I'm of the opinion that Harry Mabs was one of the true innovators in pinball. And the design and layouts of both Bank-A-Ball and Just 21 showed he was willing to think outside the box (well, he pretty much built the box) and try different things.

#7939 7 years ago

For those that don't follow the all pinball section on pinside, the EM and woodrail superstore I mentioned many times is now closed for good. I'm happy I got to visit there and spend as much time with the caretaker as I did. Don was a good guy and turned into a real good friend. He will be missed. RIP.

Quoted from jrpinball:

Thanks to "cantbfrank", I nabbed this Gottlieb "Poker Face".

Sweet! Makes me proud to be an American.

#8012 7 years ago

I'm glad my collection looks nothing like the pinside EM top 50. I have only two of them.

I guess I'd rather be a player than a rater.

#8014 7 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

Is "The Wiggler" one of them? I think you also mentioned at one time that you had a "Dodge City".

I have never found a Wiggler and kind of gave up looking. Dodge City was a decent game, but went away when I got something else.

The only two from the top 50 I still own are River Boat and Heat Wave. But I've had several of the others. If they are not getting played, they hit the road.

#8016 7 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

I thought you loved Dodge City, I'll never sell mine!

Dodge City was a good multiplayer but I can only have so many where only one player gets the jackpot after the big build up. And I kept two of them. Fashion Show turned out to be more popular with the players that come here. So it stayed.

#8022 7 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

Can't sell the game I remember playing as a kid and seeing it destroyed by vandals.

I hear that! Most of the games I played as a kid in the 70s I find much too easy now. None of them left in my collection either.

#8056 7 years ago
Quoted from pinwiztom:

I played O-din's a few weeks ago, and grew to appreciate it more than before, but still think
it a bit limited in gameplay, basically a one shot game.

For a 60s Gottlieb multiplayer, it's holding it's own pretty well here. It's got good overall geometry, and if you get it back up thru the pops it will go back thru the upper rollovers, and the plunge shot is always a challenge.

#8084 7 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

Picked this up today.

Quoted from DaveBuckholts:

Here's the first video of my "Pretty Baby" during it's pf cleanup.

Between the two of you I see six metal 2 inch flipper bats. Very impressive!

#8086 7 years ago
Quoted from DaveBuckholts:

I was skeptical if I would like the play on "Pretty Baby", but after all the rubbers being replaced and the pf being cleaned and waxed, it's actually a fun game.

I've found most 60s Williams games to be fun players. And their multiplayer games from that era are as good or better than any with a large variety of different features and good scoring rules. I'm always on the lookout for another.

I've not played Pretty Baby, but it looks to have a decent layout and those drop targets in front of the kickout holes look interesting. Flipper placement makes for some short ball times I'm sure.

#8109 7 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

I don't think any other SS or DMD game even had six.

Ripley's has six as well. And a vari-target. Gottlieb's Goin' Nuts has seven pop bumpers.

#8115 7 years ago

I'm an Aquarius but would not be able to make room for that machine.

#8119 7 years ago

As much as I like a lot of Art Stenholm's work I am not crazy about that one. Same with MIBS. I went to look at one for sale and walked...

Now Surf Side, Heat Wave, and Eager Beaver are another story.

#8125 7 years ago
Quoted from Otaku:

I love them, the little flippers especially add more "flavor" in that department and I would assume that era of multiplayers would appeal more to the picky collector than the early 70's (pre-drop-target) ones, although I very much love both. Obviously & unfortunately multiplayer titles don't hold up to the hype

It's probably pretty obvious by now most of my multiplayer games are Williams from the 60s. And I get drop targets and short flippers on several of those. Surf Side just adds a little variety and is very nice to look at.

#8127 7 years ago
Quoted from Otaku:

Yes. Although I am a big fan and collector myself, sometimes you deserve the Williams icon more than I do!

I just go after the games I feel play and look the best no matter who made them. And the ones that get the most play by myself and others stay.

#8129 7 years ago
Quoted from boilerman:

art plays a big part

Art plays a big part on several of my machines. Stenholm that is....

Never saw that game before.

With only 10 made, Goin' Nuts is highly collectible and priced accordingly.

I finally got this Darts near where I want it to be. Tore it all apart and gave it a good tune-up. Re-glued all the inserts and touched up the playfield in several spots to the best of my ability. And a new backglass tops it all off. I'd say it's a keeper. It plays snappy and is a whole lot of fun.

Quoted from hoov:

Really like the Norm Clark design and flow of the playfield. I also like your Skill Pool

I had them both at the same time, but a lot of people were interested in getting the King Pin so I sold it and kept Skill Pool. I like having at least one of those games with the big cluster of rollover buttons that you need to complete to advance in my collection.

#8172 7 years ago
Quoted from hoov:

Norm did a great job on his 1st game.

Yes he did. He did a lot of good stuff after that too. I probably have five or six of his now and they are some of my most played games. But no King Pin anymore. Anyway, enjoy them!

Quoted from jrpinball:

I don't think that's an accurate production number. While it is a very desirable Williams woodrail, I've seen quite a few of them around.

Satellite seems to be much scarcer. Don had Satellite, Gusher, and Sea Wolf, of which I thought Satellite was the better player so I bought it.

In the end though, I sold it back as it was too valuable and kept Arrow Head as it was a better player than all the other three. It might be pretty rare as well.

#8323 7 years ago

I'll probably never see another one of these again. Just as well. We got to play it and enjoy it while it was here.

I'm winding down on the overhaul of my Williams Big Deal. I always do the flippers last. But I've got to ask you guys what were they thinking here? Yes those colis say Gottlieb on them. I've got enough extra original parts to put it back to normal.

That's as close to being a Chicago Coin without actually being one as can be.

Love the artwork on this vintage of Bally. Wizard, Captain fantastic, & Old Chicago in a row would be the bomb!

I have to give Bigdaddy1 (Robert) a big thank you here. Just picked this up and plugged her in. 100% out of the box, and it was literally packed in a box. Had to take out about a hundred screws, but it survived perfectly intact from Utah.

History is repeating itself. Congrats! On a beautiful, butt kicking game.

The 3 ball is new for me. All mine are set to 5. But my apron card says 3, and only 3 balls were included...so..I better step up my game. It usually takes that many for me to warm up

Mine came on 3 ball and I just left it there. You play it over and over and over again like that and it makes getting 1000 a real challenge.

I've never played one, but when I saw that episode of Kolchak a few weeks ago I knew I had to have one. We all have our own reasons for wanting to get certain pinball games.

#8511 7 years ago

I like the look of 4 Square better than Astro myself and it looks like a real fun game to play. This one should clean up nicely and I won't have any problem bringing it back to life. It's all but a done deal but I'm still waiting for pics of the other game I'm getting with it before we finalize it.

#8610 7 years ago

I might give that a try after it gets here. Or maybe the week after that. May take some 2000 grit to this one's playfield in the morning and finish it up. As nice a condition it was in when it got here, it suffered from what most games this old do.

This was one serious insert re-glue project. Got them as good as can be.

Quoted from pinballbrian:

Hey Odin ,like your skill pool glass, would like to see your machine when finished

Thanks! I was really on the fence about getting a second (or third) Skill Pool until I saw the pics especially of that original backglass. Once I saw pics of the back, I knew it had to be one of the nicest original survivors as we all know what most Skill Pool backglasses look like now.

It should be en route pretty soon along with 4 Square and a Stern Stars. Gotta treat yourself once in a while.

DSCN5423 (resized).JPGDSCN5423 (resized).JPG

#9188 6 years ago

It didn't take me 100 hours, but then again I'm not looking for a trophy. That era Williams score reels are much easier and faster to go thru than some of the others I've worked on. The roulette wheel was a little tedious to take apart and clean up, but it was worth the effort.

It is a much better playing game than the other roulette game I played when I was young (can't remember what title). Norm liked to incorporate casino games into his pinball designs and this one may have to go next to his blackjack game, Lady Luck. It's a lot of fun.

Yeah, it didn't take 100 hours, but at least I positioned the flippers correctly. You might want to check the left side ones on yours. They look off.

Quoted from Arcade:

We just picked up two EM's last week.
Turns out one of them is an A-Go-Go like Odin just aquired.
It was such a cool EM we decided to live stream it last Sunday on our twitch channel.
You can check it out if you like at http://www.twitch.tv/thepinballmafia
Here are a couple of photos of the games as we got them.

I watched your A Go Go video and what is interesting is from the factory the flippers are wired to flip three at a time. The three right ones with the right button, and the three left ones with the left button. Looks as if yours has been re-wired to only flip two at a time. Something I had originally considered doing, but now I think I find it unnecessary.

Either way, congrats on picking up a real fun game. Kind of underated, but numbers don't lie. It was one of the highest produced games of the 60s.

#9227 6 years ago

Something you mentioned in the video I think about how it's kind of confusing with the flippers laid out the way they are. I don't think having three go at the same time makes it any easier though. May even make it harder. I'm just going to leave it the way it is. Fun game for sure especially with more than one player. Every time that roulette wheel spins we all look at it.

A Go Go may be the first game with a ball search feature as well, with that timer unit that will count up and spin the roulette wheel again if the ball doesn't drop in one of the holes. It is set at 15 clicks from the factory but I moved the pin on the stepper so now it's at 9 which is still plenty.

finished gottlieb fashion show

I just got mine finished up and now it is back in the corner where it belongs. Honestly I haven't found many 60s Gottlieb multiplayers that turn out to be keepers, let alone fun to play repeatedly, but this one is especially when two players are involved. It's in top tune now and taken off high tap and plays quite snappy.

"Trust the post", is our motto.

I've wondered about that as the post has the same aging and patina as all the other posts. At least it's not that two post jobby. I was going to remove it during the shop job and decided to wait and see. If the game gets too easy, which it's not, the post is gone.

Quoted from Darcy:

"Nobody puts baby in the Corner!"
Looks like it has some interesting shots. That risky center roto value. Then there are those two roll through lanes with the same roto value. Could be challenging to compete, indeed!

The corner is prime real estate under the light, and Fashion Show has an art package that deserves it. If it was only I that played it, it might be gone, but sometimes I let the patrons decide what stays. And it gets played.

#9277 6 years ago

As far as the one player, fully addictive pinball experience, the one next to it would be really hard to beat. I bet it took in a lot of nickels back in the day, and still does. Thank you Mr. Neyens.

Took the, 'How Heavy is it Test', it is heavier than most pins, strong and thick plywood construction.

From the internet somewhere that Williams cabinet is described as having an anti-vandalism design. It was impossible to kick the coin door, or the bottom of the game in the front. With an up swung kick.

The styling of the 60s cabinets are solid as can be including the entire bottom panel. I can see how they would be hard to break into, or break period.

For the mod cabs, Magic Clock is a real good one. Not just built like a tank with a place to set down a drink, but the overall theme and art package are very appealing. It is the design, rules, and game play that anchored this one to the ground.

There's no where to fit it at the moment and I never thought of myself as a hoarder, but I see no reason to let that empty space in mom's garage go to waste. So that's where the overflow has been going as of late. But not this one.

Beat The Clock is the only single player EM with multiball that I know of. That, the backbox animation, and the terrific art package make it a very special game indeed.

#9448 6 years ago

That's beautiful. I could tell long ago it would be a fantastic, fun playing machine, even before I had the chance to do so. They just aren't around here that I know of, and I never saw one on location.

I have a schematic, but could really use the instruction cards. No hurry at all though.

I've worked on quite a few Gottliebs myself now, along with all the others and from what I can tell in many instances they were able to save on materials by over-engineering some of the parts like score reels for example.

I mean you get a lot more plastic and thin copper where others didn't. And the size of some of these components tend to be smaller.

Domino and Stop N Go arrived yesterday and I am very happy. Backglass on Stop N Go is about as perfect as a 50 year old glass gets and Domino is so clean inside and out, it is verging on collector quality.

So far so good on Domino. I completed the pattern and got a special last night. The roto target is a little sticky but I will fix that this weekend. What's the star for? I haven't looked into that yet. I'm guessing it might give you the next domino.

#9800 6 years ago

No, I'm saving it for the weekend. It was the usual Jack and Coke night and make it into work the next day. My buddy Bob did come over and we initiated Stop N Go, and he beat me! After I beat him on a couple other games. Some times I am real hot out of the gate..

Stop N Go looks to be a shoe in in the multiplayer lineup, with unique features and rules, flippers in the correct direction, and that beautiful Stenholm art package.

#9802 6 years ago

No extra ball that I can see. It might be too easy a way to earn a credit as well. I'll look into it later to see what it does unless somebody else her knows. I hope it's not the wrong decal but they all look original.

#10229 6 years ago

I missed that Beat The Clock by about a day and i know you got it at a very fair price. But driving as far as you did to get it, I'm glad you ended up with it.

The one I got is a bit of a project and if no backglass becomes available, I'll probably just set it up and fix it up so it's playable and then decide if I want to look for a better one. Either way it's a very unique machine and a good looker too.

#10231 6 years ago

Well, if anybody ever comes across a decent backglass, original or screen printed repro, please let me know and I'll start the restoration process to the best of my ability. How deceiving it is when you look at the game from the front with that big trim on the head and you open it up and find how shoddy and cheap the construction really was.

Of the woodrail multiplayers I have owned and played, this is the best of them. Not just because of the look, but great rules and gameplay as well. One that has really earned it's stay, and it will be staying for as long as I can tell.

The artwork is beautiful with several pretty ladies. And the progressive rules that go along with the 4 drop targets makes each one important.

Ug, so many score reels....

Fortunately, these are the well designed kind that are super easy and quick to work on. With strong switches that rarely break or go out of adjustment.

#12019 4 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

Anything is better than Gottlieb score reels. Especially the first decagon type. Those three switches can make you swear and scream.

Their early ones which are basically a clone of Williams early ones, which they may have borrowed from other arcade games of the time, aren't so bad.

Quoted from bob_e:

it is my 1st Williams game. I found a few solder joint failed, popped off the lug, when I pulled thew reel out to clean it. looks like the lug was never tinned before the wire was soldered to it.

I guess it depends on who was doing the soldering that day. Williams would not be alone there, as I had a Big Casino and a 4-Square where almost every solder joint I touched popped off because there was just enough there to make the wire stick, but not enough to make it through the hole on the switch blade.

#12021 4 years ago

I see the decagon as something they spent a lot of time engineering, over engineering, but added the switch drive as an afterthought. Those cheap thin switch blades sure didn't help the cause.

What the decagon does give you when working properly and the plastic slide mounts aren't busted, is perfect alignment of the score reel numbers visible through the backglass. That is if they haven't flaked off or been washed off yet.
