Not really bad looking in the photos, but why do the score numbers look blue?

#10320 6 years ago
Quoted from DropTarget:

Too much to mention, and kind personal

Quoted from TheCnyPinGuy:

My buddy made me a BG for my GTB Stock Car
It’s actually a decal applied to my assisting glass

So, it's applied to the FRONT of the glass?

#10351 6 years ago

WD-40 has it's uses, but not for lubricating anything on a pinball machine except maybe the leg levelers and coin door hinge, but there's better stuff around for even those two items.

#10372 6 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

What price do you have set for the items? Going old school or current on those prices? Looks just like I remember. Now you need a chip, cigarette and Pepsi machine.
Sorry I like Pepsi more than Coke.

Pepsi is Communist. Coke is it!

#10373 6 years ago
Quoted from DropTarget:

55¢ I think that's as high as it can be set. I like Pepsi better too, but I do have a coke machine.

Fuggedaboud Pepsi. Coke is it!

Quoted from Grayman_EM:

you could go with a Ale8 made in Kentucky!

I bet that would go very well with that considerably more potent liquid that is also made in Kentucky!

Quoted from pinheadpierre:

I picked up a San Francisco and a Moulin Rouge a little over a year ago as learning objects. Neither worked.
They were cosmetically and mechanically in bad shape. I used them to practice playfield and cabinet restoration figuring that I couldn't make them any worse. Both got extensive playfield paint work and clear coats. The cabinets got stripped and repainted inside and out. Nearly every switch got cleaned, polished and adjusted. I remade all of the plastics for Moulin Rouge. Now that they are pretty much done I have happily discovered that I really enjoy playing them, too! (I wasn't sure that would be the case since I had never played a good dialed in example of either one.) Next up in the project queue - Old Chicago and Space Mission.

Truly outstanding work. Bravo! "Moulin Rouge" is an excellent player. I see you even made the very rare center "plastic". The actual one is metal, but it was only on sample games and maybe some of the early production ones. I had an image of the graphic design on it, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Quoted from AlexF:

Sold off a bunch of stuff recently to help pay for some home renovation. Still have enough games to fill a wall in the game room. Just got this Williams Jig Saw from a buddy in partial trade. The Little Chief from another buddy a couple months back. Bowlette came home last Summer. 4 Bagger and Skill Roll have been with me since the early days.

Nice lineup. How's the playfield on your "Jig Saw"? Most I've seen are shot. Also, does yours have a Williams "lightning bolt" logo toward the bottom of the playfield, or just a circle? I've seen them both ways. I think some "Jig Saw" machines had a game over relay, and others did not. I'm not sure if every backglass is screened with "game over" or not. Does yours light "game over" and shut off playfield power after the last ball drains?

I'm disqualified because I have a good idea what it is based on a Pinmail by OP.

#10539 6 years ago

Well, no deal with Camp now!

#10542 6 years ago

He hinted now and then. Your "Lucky Strike" for his "King Pin". Or didn't he ever mention it?

#10550 6 years ago

No. Williams "Lucky Strike". Vic is not a fan of add-a-ball machines. He has an "El Dorado".

Being in NY, it could be a "Gold Strike" cabinet. "Gold Stock" has a nice sound to it.

#10702 6 years ago
Quoted from eagle18:

Nice tune from HS and earlier pinball days!

Yeah. Love "the Dan". But I was thinking ELP:
"soon the Gypsy Queen...in a glaze of Vaseline...will perform on guillotine...what a scene, what a scene..."

#10706 6 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Yep... for me, Bow & Arrow is the game in the EM hall of history where you go... whoa... something is different here... big backglass... powerful pops... feels like a whole new level. Pretty much the big "shot across the bow" when Bally and Williams stole Gottlieb's thunder and began to get REALLY good.

I had one that played so damn fast after shopping it, that it dawned on me why they needed to go SS.
They made a good choice selecting that model as a prototype SS.

#10716 6 years ago

Ooh. Get rid of those metal flippers!
I'll trade ya a couple of plastic ones for them.

Nice clean up on that game!

#10718 6 years ago
Quoted from newracer:

Are the metal not original?

No. They were used on some Williams games, but not Gottlieb. They are one piece, with an integral shaft, whereas the Gottliebs use a separate plastic flipper bat which is attached to the shoe and shaft assembly with a long screw at the pivot point.
See this:http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=1003&picno=23244

#10719 6 years ago

They obviously are interchangeable, and this was done by a serviceman, or someone else somewhere along the line.

Quoted from Mopar:

A couple weeks ago, I made a trading deal to a well known (and liked) participate on this group

Ooh, that's nice! Hmm. Who made that great looking S/I card?

#10742 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

I have done that on Cowpoke, but 4 free balls..

"Buckaroo" will also give you four replays if you get the number four last.
"Flipper Cowboy" same as "Cow-Poke".
"Spin Out" is sometimes referred to as the poor man's "Buckaroo".

#10759 5 years ago
Quoted from PinballFever:

My grail pin arrived safe & sound. Any guesses what it is?

"King Tut"?

#10760 5 years ago
Quoted from PinballFever:

Nope. Here it is and it's an unmolested beauty.

Holy cow! That's a beauty. Didn't you have another one?
Edit: Yes, I see you have them next to each other on the woodrails thread.
I didn't realize it's another one of the pinball/bingo hybrid series that Williams ran.

#10772 5 years ago
Quoted from chubtoad13:

There are so many conflicting ideas, it’s kind of overwhelming. Naphtha vs Novus vs Whatever to clean the PF and can.. WD-40

You have to evaluate the degree and type of schmutz on whatever you're cleaning, and use the least agressive method that will do the job.
Also, when cleaning a playfield, evaluate the degree of planking and wear to determine what type of cleaner to use. I will avoid using any type of water-based cleaner on a playfield if it has significant wear and planking.
Naphtha is good for removing layers of old wax. I'm starting to use Novus 2 as a first polish after thoroughly cleaning the playfield, but not as a cleaner.
With any product, always try a small amount first in a small area to check how effectively it will work.
With experience, you will find what works best in each case.

I know Big Don personally, and he did a great job on that game. That coin door gleams like nothing I've ever seen before.

#10810 5 years ago

Well, these were mine, but they sold at Pinfest. Love the cash, but it stung a little to part with them.

Quoted from GorillaBiscuits:

A bit off topic but am doing a flipper rebuild on my El Dorado. How the heck do I get this thing by my thumb off LOL, I feel like a cavemen

It's a roll pin. Tap it out with a small hammer after placing it on a partially opened vise or something similar. As dt mentioned above, you may need a small punch to get it all the way through, but you can probably just grab the protruding pin with pliers and pull it out after driving it flush on the other end.

Sean

I do remember that, Sean. I think I referred to your girlfriend at the time as "your wife". I think I asked you if the "Ice Show" was for sale, and you said no. You still have that game, right?

#10884 5 years ago
Quoted from tengle93:

Just added a new wedgehead to my lineup. Been looking for a Sky Jump for awhile but when this one showed up for $150 I “jumped” on it! I think it’s the coolest backglass! Good to see you’re back with a new positive vibe, good for you and good luck with your arcade venture.

Man, you scored!

#10893 5 years ago

I've always thought that "Old Chicago" is one EM that could really look great with the proper application of LEDs.
Based only on these photos, I'll reserve judgment on this one, but if the owner likes the look, that's what's important.
Nice game.

#10903 5 years ago
Quoted from tengle93:

Thanks Vic. Having problems with the lockdown bar being frozen. Working on getting it in my house but this ridiculous rain is not helping. I’ll post when I get it loose. Any suggestions to get it freeed up would be appreciated. It’s REALLY frozen/rusted.

Is the locking lever frozen, or just the bar won't pop off after pulling the lever down?

#10906 5 years ago

Damn, you beat me to it by a minute!
Was going to say the same thing; drop target plastic isn't broken. Nice game for that cash!

#10909 5 years ago

Silverball had a "Free Fall". It was a pretty nice copy too as I recall. I haven't been there in quite a while though. They're slowly sliding toward the dark side, so maybe it's gone.

I usually like some "J" with my "PB".

#10943 5 years ago
Quoted from Pmedic871:

Since those long ago days I have always been on the lookout for one PB in particular....#Williams Blue Chip.

I wish I would have known this a couple of years ago. I had a really nice one for sale. I practically gave it away at the York Show a few years back. And, I'm in NY state.

#10945 5 years ago
Quoted from Stoomer:

That game played so nice Joe...gave me a better appreciation for this title...

Yeah, as with many other Williams titles, they are great players but not so good lookers. The theme of that game is really bizarre. I remember seeing that game brand new in the arcade back in the day, and just thought it was a crazy theme for a pinball machine. I didn't like it, but it is a good player and very fast.

#10977 5 years ago

That's a really nice "Dimension", Frank.
You can make room by selling me your "Pin-Up"!

#10981 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

I've had a dozen or so Dimensions with a couple having very minimum Kick-out wear, and actually one
having virtually any, which of course is the one elected to remain in the game room..

So you've gone way beyond even this:

#10984 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

but they were extremely pleased to have it removed from the kitchen of their mobile
home.

I'm glad you told the story, because I was going to say that between you and me, we know this game is just "trailer park trash"!

#10985 5 years ago
Quoted from cantbfrank:

Two year search came to an end last Thursday. I’m thrilled. But now I have to determine what game to sell, thinking of Buckaroo.

I thought the bumpers didn't look right, but they're easily changed out.

#10987 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Actually, this very possibly may have became the case if they hadn't spotted my
small Penny Saver ad at the time. I'm not sure how it got there, but I remember they
didn't seem to fond on it being in their kitchen. Soon after I showed up, one said
that they had never heard of anyone wanting pinball machines, leading me to maybe
believe that to them, it wasn't much more than trash..

"One man's trash is another man's treasure." Certainly very true in this instance.

#10990 5 years ago

Two add-a-ball/replay comparisons that are absolutely no contest: "Dimension" over "2001", and "Capt. Card" over "High Hand". Both the add-a-ball versions are far superior.
"2001" artwork is definitely weaker than "Dimension" as well. Especially with the guy in red tights with the load in his pants on "2001". I do think the borderless plastics on "2001" are pretty cool though. Both replay versions don't reset the targets after completion.

#10993 5 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

I'm not gonna do it. Right on Jr!

IMHO anyway.

#10998 5 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

2001 is a great machine. I wouldn't put it down.

Not putting it down really. It's a good game in it's own right, but in many cases, the add-a-ball versions are said to be lacking. I think the two I mentioned are better because of the resetting drop targets. "2001" has completely different art than "Dimension", which is unusual. It's not bad really, but "Dimension" looks better to me.

#11018 5 years ago

I was wondering what happened to you. I guess you didn’t make Pintastic either.

#11037 5 years ago

"Big Chief"? Hmmm.
There actually was one for sale at Pinfest in the flea market area. I believe it was the 2017 show.

#11038 5 years ago
Quoted from Toyguy:

Latest addition to the Cave: 1975 Williams Little Chief. Definitely a players machine, as most of mine are. Looks a little incongruous next to the P3 but I like the contrast

Another game I remember brand new in the local arcade. It was a very fast and fun game at the time.

#11063 5 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Well as you know I was going to bring a pin into work for our party, and things were going well for about an hour when it decided to cease functioning and pop a fuse for good measure.
Figures, been playing it for weeks out in the garage and it was functioning flawless. Not sure what happened, our finance officer was playing and suddenly the lights went out which dropped out the game and came back on and it reset but after reset would power down again. After I wiggled some relays and fuses it decided to check out altogether.
Gary

Ah! At least they got a few games in before it crapped out.

#11067 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Although I have a couple others with nice playfields with one being in the wrong lower cab., and the
other having only an okay cabinet, this one's cab. for sure is the better of the three. I picked it up from the
son of the father that bought it new in 1961. The only thing with the cab. is what appears to be touch
up spots on the lower front head. The son was too young to remember when it arrived to the house..
It has no coin entrance, or a serial number, but has the # 188 under the upper playfield apron..
Also, instead of having yellow and green bumper caps, it has yellow and blue.
Although a Subway is already set up, I'm sure I'll find a spot for it..

Is that the original cabinet paint?
If not, maybe someone filled in the coin entry openings and repainted the game.

#11069 5 years ago

It's supposed to have daisy caps too, not the starburst style.

#11077 5 years ago
Quoted from boilerman:

when an operator pull a game then sold it to the public, it was not uncommon for them to make it so they could not be routed agains them so the coin mech system was removed

Most likely scenario. That push button certainly doesn't look like an original factory job. With no need for a coin return button, they likely would have used the hole in the door for a start button.

#11078 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

but has the # 188 under the upper playfield apron..

That's the Gottlieb model number.
It's hard to tell for sure, but the bumper skirts and bodies don't look original either. The bodies appear to be the later style.

#11082 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

JR, being the Sherlock that I know you to be, it would not have surprised me if you had
noticed a bit of wear, yet the gleam of new mylar at the pop bumpers, all adding up that the
pops were rebuilt before the pic was taken. One skirt was pretty bad, and the others were
getting there, so with Wednesday being a rainy day, it's one of the first things that I did..
Also, another thing that I believe was overlooked was the green out lane guides aren't, they're
red. With all the lubing being completed, and the playfield 3/4 done, I can already tell she's
going to be a pretty fast player..
Since the other two F.F.s have nicer playfields, I'll probably hang onto this one for a while and
then let it loose this Winter and put that toward a machine I'm hoping to pick up that will fit in the
EM Arcade game room perfectly..

It's a fun game, and although it's pretty much identical to "Subway", it has a different feel because of the shallow cabinet. Plus, you can do the left outlane "bump save" because of that style of card tray. I once did it with the center target lit, and I nailed the target for an extra ball!

#11083 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

all adding up that the
pops were rebuilt before the pic was taken.

PBR now has the original style repro pop bumper bodies. Great product, which was long awaited.

I have the AAB version Top Hand and have been thinking of getting a new glass and going through it,
but why I'm mostly posting is back in the mid 80s, I remember spending a few weeks in Dover Plains and remember
this huge massive vintage looking building outside of town. That would be going back toward Albany way..
I still have a couple pics of it on slides. It had to of been something very special back in it's day..

Dover Plains? That's not terribly far from me, and really is nowhere near Albany!

#11136 5 years ago

Damn! Where did you find it? I've been looking for a "Pin-Up" for a friend, and I'm in your area. In fact, I know someone in Brewster who owns one, but be doesn't want to sell it.

#11139 5 years ago
Quoted from thestreetzking:

I really want a bingo machine, I feel like they really have the "one more game" aspect.

A while back, I helped Vic Camp sell off several bingos that a widow had in her basement. I think we moved them all.
They're around, but not many in NY.
Vic could probably find you one, and recommend a good one.

Quoted from DropTarget:

philadelphia.craigslist.org link

Ooh, goodie! Did you ever sell your Gottlieb one?

#11157 5 years ago

It shouldn't be difficult to strip the wooden parts and refinish them with clear. Obviously you should disassemble the machine down to an empty cabinet first. Try one of the legs first. Apply some paint stripper to it, and see what you get.
The beehive shooter rod bezel shouldn't be terribly difficult to find. You can get a white Stern one and paint it red if you aren't able to locate an original red one. PBR has them.

#11158 5 years ago

I just checked. PBR has red beehive shooter rod housings. The part number is GTB-48RA. It's $7.60.

#11162 5 years ago
Quoted from ismiglif:

Thanks - that's how I'm leaning after spending the last couple hours getting 70 years of nicotine off the cabinet...it is looking nice.
Legs seem simple enough (though it came with two different lengths F & R) but is there an easy way to get the side rails off? I'm not sure how they're attached.

I wouldn't remove the rails. Just do your best with them attached to the cabinet.

#11166 5 years ago
Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

In the history of Bally games from this period (1960-68), I have not yet seen a cabinet that does not have serious flaking, unless it is was repainted, or a home use only example. The quality of top paint was very, very poor. Bazaar is no exception, especially in the bronze metal tone used for the lamps. However, the playfields held up extremely well with factory lacquer.

Yeah, Ballys and the front of Williams games.

#11169 5 years ago

An interesting fact. Ted Zale lived in Mountain Home, Arkansas, I believe until he passed away. Wayne Neyens was also living there at the same time, but neither one knew that the other resided there.

Quoted from Ballypin:

I was fortunate to pickup this 1964 Bally Hay Ride add a ball from another pinsider in Ohio. I was initially inspired by @ryanclaytor and his journey documented on this site last year to pickup his Hay Ride. With only 250 produced, I am looking forward to giving it the restoration attention it deserves. The good is a very nice condition playfield with typical wear at the pop bumpers and the upper ball arch. Game appears to be complete except the coin mech and chute parts and typical missing back door. Backglass has some flaking but presents very well and has no fading. Cabinet, upper arch and ball shooter gauge have been painted over but I have been successful in removing paint from the right side and with pictures from Ryan, will be able to create stencils and match colors for an intended re-paint.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

There was a "Harvest" at last year's York show that was tempting, but I would rather find the add-a-ball version. Gorgeous playfield art on that pair.

There was a decent "Serenade" project game in the Pinfest flea market area back in May. I'm kicking myself for not grabbing it. There was also an outstanding "Viking" on the show floor which I assumed was not for sale, but it was. Some lucky guy got them both. I believe he's here on Pinside.

Well, mine had some small STP stickers on the door, but they're now history! Funny that yours has a single coin chute. I've never seen one like that.
What's your serial number? Mine is a pretty low number. Despite it having the wrong bumpers installed, the guy gave me the original daisy caps, and they are the
domed type. My other "Bowling Queen" machines had the flat slanted top caps.

#11279 5 years ago

Serial number 02397. This is what the door looked like when I got it. It also had a Bally shooter rod on it. All fixed now. The metal posts are the early type with the hollow base which are installed over a washer.

A formally battered Hearts and Spades awaits fresh paint and my first go at webbing.. 2 of weeks of work to make the cabinet and head solid again.[quoted image]

If it were me, I'd make a true wedgehead out of it. That was my first ever machine, and I couldn't stand how that head looked next to my brother's "Subway".
I've always wanted to see what it would look like with a wedgehead backbox. I think it would look great.

Something about Gottliebs of this vintage speak to me if that makes sense, I knew I wanted a Domino and a Hearts and Spades just upon seeing a video of game play. The art, the sounds, the layout all come together.
[quoted image]

I like this era as well. Drowsy Art Stenholm depictions and those games play great. I just don't like that lightbox on H&S. Almost looks homemade. Obviously the idea didn't go over well.

There is supposedly something called the "half-life" theory. With the passing of each decade, supposedly half of the number of any game title survives, while half succumb to attrition. Hopefully, the growing number of collectors and hobbyists over the last couple of decades have slowed this rate of attrition.

Quoted from gdonovan:

I'm more annoyed it didn't come out better, if I touch something I really shoot for 100%
Like when you have a new car and it gets a scratch, you notice it but no one else does.
Just spurs me to refining my technique on backglass repairs.
Game plays awesome, wife unit happy. Tough but rewarding. One of the very few EM that was still on our want list. Maybe a Fireball or Sheba if I come across one.
EDIT: added repair pics.
The cabinet back was missing a piece and the bottom was also damaged. The bottom was easy to cut and replace (along with a bunch of braces I had to cut and glue into position, all were missing but two) the back piece was roughly 22 x 4 and more tricky as it was not square. I had to find a piece of lumber that was roughly .835 thick and then make 2 cuts for the side joints and then a third cut to receive the bottom panel. Not as easy as it sounds when one edge is taller than the other. Clamped together while the glue dried which wasn't even necessary as there is 3 six inch long deck screws countersunk in holding the new piece in place. I didn't get too crazy on the paint match here.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I'm glad you're making it pretty. I almost bought that game. Had the head off and in my van, and had already paid the guy. He went to fetch the key, and while he was gone, I saw that the back was blown out and the bottom was really damp and delaminating.
When he returned, I asked him if he would mind if I passed on it. If he would have given me a tussle, I'd have just taken the game anyway, but he was ok with it. He even helped me put it back together!
On another day, I'd have followed through and bought it, but I already had several projects in the works, and just didn’t need another.

My wife and I are appreciative you didn't! She enjoyed playing one immensely at Pintastic 2017 and I have been on the hunt ever since. I vaguely recall it was Sing Along but I'd much rather have the AAB Melody. One of the last EM's we were keeping an eye out for now that we are filling out a few spots with SS. I still have Hearts and Spades to finish, Grand Tour to web and stencil and dig into Bazaar. Sad, another full cabinet repaint.

It was "Melody" at Pintastic last year and this year as well. Brought by my buddy Mike in CT. His isn't for sale.
I've owned three of them over the years. Fun game for sure.

Well actually the GI issue has come back but it's more than that, all playfield lights die, including inserts. Does look like tilt related but contacts are just fine and soldering seem ok.
For the other issue, it was a broke wire but could not be seen as it was internal.

Check the fuse clip, and install a new fuse too. I've seen plenty of intermittent fuses. They heat up, and the internal connection gets flaky.

Quoted from wayner:

Just completed a full resto on a GTB 1966 Crosstown (previously posted cab repaint).
This machine was in a fairly poor state with cab structural issues including bottom board needing replacement and a range of operational and 'previous fix' issues and loads of stripped timber thread holes.
My primary concern however was that at some point someone had clearcoated the playfield whilst populated and before any cleaning. The shooter and upper ball trails were also quite nasty. Therefore the pf resto was always going to be a compromise but in the circumstances I am reasonably happy with the result but will be on the lookout for a better pf.
The machine did not have coin chutes but I was able to modify a couple of earlier chutes to resemble the half moon style. For the moment I have used a 5c/25c coin plate but will be on the lookouit for a 10c/25c version.
The registration between the upper blue front cab line with those on the cab are out but thats the way it was and reflected on ipbd. I am always a tad drawn to correct these anomolies but on this one I decided to leave as original-anyhow a good talking point that things in the day were not necessarily perfect.
Machine plays fast and is really a delight to play. I really like the graphics of this era.

This Italian wedgehead was sitting outside under a tarp for two years, after being brought here from South Africa.
The cabinet is shot, but the rest fared very well. I sealed the backglass today, and popped it in a "Top Card" box. Luckily, I have a spare wedgehead cabinet for it, also from a "Top Card". It is basically a foreign made Gottlieb.
Only one of these registered on Pinball Owners which is primarily foreign owners.
Thanks to Kevin McHugh for the lead.

Lots of differences in the coaster riders. Mostly the women/girls for some reason. They made all the younger looking ones a bit older. Would love to know the story behind the changes.

Some of the faces on the Playmec version look familiar. Guy up front looks like Dick York (the original Darrin on "Bewitched"). Another guy looks like Dick Clark, and the woman in the middle looks a little like Carol Burnett. The guy in the back with the derby hat (falling out of the coaster!) looks a bit like Lou Costello. Rotton Rubbers on both

Quoted from Ballypin:

What is the definition of a "Grail Game" ?
A game you have been searching for your entire life ?
If so, I submit you mine: 1965 Bally Band Wagon. Released in March 1965, this was the current Bally pin available when I made my appearance in early April 1965. This example was purchased from the Replay Foundation in Pittsburgh and sports serial number BW 1601. Being # 601 out of 1840 made (33% into production) between March and May, it is quite possible that this Band Wagon and I share the same "birth" date.
When I get around to this restoration, I envision a cabinet repaint and commission a BGresto backglass.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Ja, Band Wagen, ja! Ich habe eine,

Weekend pickup and first woodrail, Wagon Train. Looks complete and everything functions. Needs some cleaning and polish. Backdoor and coinbox are missing and probably needs a backglass, although the bad areas are all solid colors. I have never tried backglass touchup but this might be a good candidate.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

"Wagon Train" was my very first woodrail as well. My backglass was in similar condition to yours; maybe even a little worse. Yours looks repairable, because it's mostly unlit solid colors (the pale yellow sections) which need retouching. Obviously, seal it first. It seems that this is another one of those woodrail titles which have many surviving examples still around. It's a woodrail, but could have very well been a metal rail game. No gobble holes, and reel scoring. A later metal rail game, "Sweet Hearts" (the last Gottlieb with gobble holes) could have easily been a woodrail.

JR, I found it in NY in some guys barn. The apron was pretty rusty and the legs were pretty toasted. I was lucky to salvage them since they are different bolt spacing than typical pinball legs.

There was one for sale at one of the Saratoga shows. It wasn't up and working. Thought maybe you got it there.

Lots of brittle posts during that era. Did a couple of Bally "Flip Flop"s recently, and many posts were broken. Gottlieb "Sure Shot"/"Bank Shot" also seem to often have posts which are broken or break easily.

Williams "Triple Action".

#13105 1 year ago

There's another very similar version called "Star Action". Exactly the same game, except that "Triple Action" has a yellow base colored cabinet, and "Star Action" has a white base colored cabinet. Also "Star Action" is strictly an add-a-ball version, and lacks a replay unit. The scoring is 10X the values on "Triple Action".
Both games are from 1973.

Nothing special about the title I picked up last night but the pin's history was the surprise. Great art package on Wizard but I do have a fondness for Bally pins as well. Had a non-pinhead, but big music fan with me to help move it, loved it as he's a Who fan.
From the few pictures on the FB ad it looked to be in pretty good shape overall but hard to be sure. Expected to see the usual wear on a popular title.
Betsy said she is selling her house and retiring in Florida. We walked into the finished basement and I was quite surprised. I asked her if she knew the history of the machine and she said "I sure do! My Dad bought that pinball machine brand new when I was 8 years old. It's been with me ever since!"
Can't wait to get it cleaned up and playing fast once again. [quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Curious to know the meter reading on it. Rare to find a HUO game this old.

#13114 1 year ago
Quoted from Garrett:

I meant to look at it this morning but forgot, will add a pic later after work. This pin wasn't just decoration for Betsy, she played it! Always great to see lady pinheads.
Cleaned up it should look stellar inside and out.

It appears to have had a fair amount of use despite being in a home environment for it's entire life. I wonder how often it was waxed, and if it's the original ball.

#13118 1 year ago
Quoted from MikeO:

While it is a clean example, the 25 cents for one play dymo label looks like it was routed prior to dad buying the game for her. The coin gear is what will usually tell you if it truly is HUO or possibly spent time on route prior to her ownership.
Knowing when Betsy turned 8 would help to truly age the game.
Regardless, a very nice example.

I would think a new machine would have come with pricing cards. Perhaps dad made the Dymo label, and kept it on coin play so as to make it like a piggy bank.

2 months later
#13182 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

I wouldn't think it is, but from the looks of the backglass,
looks like it's set up as the true WOW machines (Bank Shot - Rock Star),
or are all the ball count numbers (1 - 10) hidden unless lit?
This machine was produced more than a year before Pro Pool.
I wouldn't be surprised if Jay wouldn't mind a few additional pics sent in
to IPDB of this machine..

The games that you consider "true WOW" games obviously came later, and use what is loosely known as the "Italian system". This was likely done so that Gottlieb could make basically the same game for domestic and export markets, with only the backglass being slightly different.
Yes, the earlier ones such as "Play Pool" and "Lucky Strike" have the novelty play feature, as well as the five ball maximum extra ball feature (the Italian system).
There is no word "WOW" screened into the five symbols on the export backglasses, but other than that, the backglasses are interchangeable between the domestic and export versions, starting with the deep cabinet add-a-ball games.

#13184 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

For this example domestic meaning Pro Pool? Play Pool and Pro Pool glasses
aren't accurately interchangeable..

No. As I said, only the deep cabinet ones are interchangeable;
after Gottlieb settled on making one type of game for both markets.

#13186 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Them, yes. Although it appears the Italian versions don't have the Wows in the backglass,
they would be interchangeable, however except for Rock Star. Rock Star has the Wows
and evidently all 268 where made to be exported to Italy. The last Gottlieb pin for Italian export.
Makes me wonder how many there actually are here in the States..
btw: I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the backside of Play Pool's bg..

I was wondering about "Rock Star" because it's the only one of that group which does not have an alternately named counterpart.
You're saying it does have WOW screened in the backglass?
I was going to ask someone I know who owns one. Do you own one?

#13195 1 year ago

I wonder at what point was the player allowed to manually shoot the extra balls. "Fun Fair" seems to be one of the latest Gottlieb games I've seen with the automatic kickback unit.

#13197 1 year ago
Quoted from Mopar:

I'm thinking when the ball drains, it rolls over a rollover which activates a Relay (or the Kick Out Coil) direct
when at least one step up is made on the extra ball coil, but then again, it could be done on a totally
different circuitry system. Maybe illa92 can fill us in on that..

You misunderstand. Earlier games did not allow the player to manually shoot their extra balls, hence the auto shooter as seen on this game. Later games did not have this unit, and allow the player to shoot the extra balls in the normal way (using the plunger). I'm wondering when this started.

#13198 1 year ago

Oh, and my friend reported back.
His "Rock Star" is not a sample game, and does have the word "wow" in the music notes on the backglass.
It could be that none of these were actually exported to Italy because Gottlieb stopped short of making the export version of the game.

Can anyone confirm for me (Pro or Con, but with very high certainty) that mid-1960's era Gottlieb EMs did *not* have what we'd consider formal Owner / Operator manuals ? Not referring to minimalist schematic diagrams here. I would have thought that such manuals went back even earlier than that. Like Slick Chick earlier, or even maybe to woodrails era ?
If not, as of WHEN did such manuals become fairly common ?

As far as I know, there were no actual manuals until early '70s; maybe around the era of Gottlieb's "High Hand". Sixties games and woodrails certainly did not have manuals.
"High Hand" also appears to be the first Gottlieb game to bear a copyright notice on the backglass.

#13408 1 year ago

Ok. An update from my brother who works at PBR.
"Steve Young tells me that Gottlieb manuals started in 197O with "Snow Derby"/"Snow Queen". "2001" was the first wedgehead with a manual in 1971. Steve then mentioned that "Super Jumbo", the first 4- player game and "Bowlette" had manuals."
In addition, he said that the add-a-ball versions did not have a manual.

No formal manual as noted above but a pretty good collection of manual contents, loose-leaf style. I don’t know if it is a complete collection, but all the paperwork is original. Purchased here on Market Classifieds from a current ad.

I found an old photograph of my very first pinball machine (the lightbox anyway). Notice the high score date; 9-11-1979, and the score 658,490. I didn't keep it very long; maybe a couple of years, because it was modified with three inch flippers, and was ridiculously easy. Also, I just didn't like that funky beaded lightbox, especially as it looked standing next to my brother's "Subway". It wasn't in the greatest condition either. I sold it to a co-worker of my brother.
I didn't own another machine until almost ten years later, when I found a complete Gottlieb "Play Mates" in the trash.
To this day, I've never found another "Hearts and Spades" machine, although I have seen a few here and there over the years.

Hah! I remember seeing a Williams "Jungle" in a reverse wedgehead cabinet (yup, I think it was a "Skill Pool" cabinet) many years ago at the Allentown show.
The seller was trying to convince me that it was original, but I told him that it was impossible, since a whole 'nother cabinet style came between the two types.
You probably ended up with that very machine.
Oh, and "21" should be in a woodrail cabinet. It's not likely original, since "Darts" is the only Williams game which was produced in both woodrail and "styling of the sixties" cabinets.
