Looks great. I’m a big fan of Bally Freedom even without the middle pop but that puts it over the top IMO.

Is that a new backglass or was it one of the few that beat the odds?

#13358 32 days ago

Picked up this one yesterday. It’s true about Sonic’s, this playfield is in almost perfect shape (just some old Mylar adhesive that I need to clean off) along with the backglass. Even the cabinet is in great shape.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove this fried coil on the 1st player 100s score reel? I just don’t want to damage the plastic piece that holds the plunger. The plunger is frozen stuck. Thanks.

Man, that playfield is pretty! Don't you wish the other manufacturers had done the same thing?

If you can get that coil out of the machine, I've used a hacksaw and just cut down the length of the coil to get it off the plunger. Just have to be careful not to nick the plunger when you get close to it.

Thanks paulace for the advice on the burnt coil and yes I wish my other 14 Gottlieb, Williams and Bally playfields had been made like the Sonics.

It’s the first playfield I’ve ever had where I don’t have to do extensive paint touch ups or a repaint. In fact, it needs nothing and even the plastics are the flattest and cleanest I’ve ever seen.

What a relief.

Curious about the differences. Is yours an overlay? This is my touched up original I’m working on. Your text font & size is different on the top rollovers, white areas & at the slings

Nicely done. I had the flyer for that game on my wall for years and never knew it had backglass animation. It’s a very cool game.

they're all together in a line up..

Thanks! I had 2 and 3 of each, and always made sure I kept one full set.
The icing on the cake will be to set up the Woodrail Flipper. Unlike the metal
rail Flipper white side plastics, the woodrail has red. Mine is lacking one.
Steve (PBR) said he's going to be producing them, so once he has them, I'll
be going through the Woodrail..

Nice, I’ve had Four of the Flippers… Parade, Clown, Cowboy, and Pool. Only have Flipper cowboy left. Didn’t care for Flipper Parade, but I enjoyed the others. Never had an opportunity for Flipper Fair or Flipper.

It’s not an overlay. I repainted 95% of the playfield with an airbrush and then made water slide decals. It was my first time doing a playfield and my skills are limited. Since then I’ve gotten better, but still struggle to find the exact font. I usually end up finding something close. This is what I started with.

Curious how you guys would rank the gameplay/fun factor of the Flipper-series games? I have a Flipper and a Flipper Pool (both of which I think are fantastic) but haven’t played any of the others.

"Flipper Cowboy" is the same game as "Cow-Poke" and "Flipper Fair" is the same as "Subway" although they have a different feel because of the differences in the cabinets. I'd say it's a toss up between those two being the best of the series. I never cared much for "Flipper Clown". "Flipper Pool" is a fun game but it's generally not considered to be part of the "flipper series".

As far as playing, I can get into any of the Flipper Series games, but yes,
Flipper Cowboy and Flipper Fair are the better players..
I like Flipper Pool (1965), but it's not one of the Flipper Series games.
1962 Flipper Clown was the last of the series..

Bought Super Soccer in 1979, I was 12 years old, played it again today. Added Big Deal in College, about 1987 for $75, and then Aztec for $100 a few years later.

Cards, Circus/Carnival, and Cowboy themes were Gottlieb, but one other of Gottlieb's
(that the Series is missing) is Pool..
If Flipper Pool came out 2 or 3 years earlier, intended or not, it very well may have
been considered as the 6th and final machine of the Flipper Series..

#13378 25 days ago

Since most of these games were made over 60 years ago, it’s hard for me place much relevance on whether it was released as part of the original series or not. It’s a 60’s Gottlieb machine with the word Flipper in the title and is a lot of fun to play. Good enough for me!

I stopped pursuing the Flipper series after I got Flipper Parade and the game play disappointed. Just wasn’t good enough for a modest collection. I recently sold both Flipper Clown and the Flipper Pool as part of a downsizing before moving to our new house we had built.

Just got this beauty home. Super clean bottom board, relays and steppers. It was in a family basement in Indianapolis for 40 years and it shows almost no playfield wear, just needs a good cleaning and new rubbers. Plastics are flat and in excellent shape. Backglass has a little flaking in the yellow areas but that’s about it.

Price was very reasonable for this title I think. $550.

I have a Card Whiz at home, along with a Quick Draw, Flipper Pool and a few others. The Card Whiz is my go-to game....I play that more than the others for some reason. It's a great combination of satisfying shots at those drops and joker targets. It's tough, but not too tough. It was Ed Krynski's favorite of his own designs. I'll bet you'll love it.

I heard very good things about Card Whiz. I like Add-a-Balls, and the next best
thing for me on multi players is Shoot Again. That's what kept me from searching
for a Card Whiz is that it doesn't have "Same Player Shoots Again". If it had a
Shoot Again, I'm sure I'd have one a while back, but it appears this is one title
that I should maybe consider as an exception..
Another title I never really looked into is Hot Tip. I hear only good things about
Hot Tip..

Hey I just picked up my first EM too...a Card Whiz!. looks identical with exception of the right hand card that lists the scores for replay. Great game. We love the pace com
pared to the modern pins. I think the flippers need a bit of adjustment so I'll be doing so research to find out how to do that on an old Gottlieb EM. I have a Xenon that I've rebuilt flippers on which is pretty straightforward, does anyone know if there's a big difference between Bally and Gottlieb flippers from that era?

#13388 16 days ago

Glad you are enjoying it StoneyCreek!

#13389 16 days ago

Mopar - I love add-a-balls too, especially for home play, but only have Flipper Pool so far. I restored a 1962 Friendship 7 for a friend, which is a fun aab. Sea_Wolf has a Lucky Hand, which is a great one!

StoneyCreek - I like Gottlieb's flipper design back in the mid-70's - they used good parts in all their mechs (with the possible exception of spinners). Not long after, everyone started going to DC flippers, so they became more powerful. If you're going to rebuild yours, just get all the slop out of it, put in new sleeves and bushings - well, just get a flipper rebuild kit from PBR. And if you still want a bit more power, Steve Young sells orange dot and yellow dot coils that are more powerful than the original A-5141 coils. I've never needed to try the yellow dot - orange dot has been plenty powerful enough for me.

Thanks for the tips, I will check with PBR on getting some replacement sleeves etc. ! While it is fairly straightforward to roll Card Whiz on 5 balls, it sure is fun to try and get all the bonus target combos, all the jokers and nail the special. Very accessible game.

Look at your flipper mechs before you call PBR. That game was in the transition period when they switched to a new style (more rugged, but not quite as good action imo) If they are the older style with fiber links, the originals should be replaced as they will have elongated holes from wear. Also check for plunger wear/mushroom/crowns and broken/worn coil stops.

Yeah, what stashy said - all good ideas.

#13393 15 days ago
Quoted from paulace:

Yeah, what stashy said - all good ideas.

One symptom is that if i hold a flipper up and the ball comes down and hits it, the flipper bounces squishily down then back up to hold the ball. I havent' taken a look yet, but it seems like a lot of play in there somewhere.

#13394 15 days ago

Could be a sloppy linkage, or it could be that EOS switch adjusted incorrectly.

Hot Tip is my favorite EM ever. By a very large margin. 6 drop targets, spinner, captive ball, 2 kick out holes. BOOM!
