Is that six (EMs) in the garage?
Did you part with Big Daddy?

I would never part with Big Daddy. It takes on all comers and takes no prisoners. Nothing's changed. The Fun Park in the background left a month or two ago.

It is seven including my yet to be finished Arrow Head project.

Quoted from Sea_Wolf:

Not perfect by any means but I repainted almost the entire playfield by hand (brush) then clear coated and waxed. It was pretty rough when I got it and I still need to paint under the Mylar where the pop bumpers are but I’m going to wait till I try to rebuild the middle pop.
Now I need some ideas on what to do (if anything) with the bad touch up on the backglass.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

That looks a million times better!

Thanks. Took awhile to match the green/blue, pink and yellow. Surprising what you can do with a set of good brushes and patience.

I had two, but one was just a parts game, both are now at PPM.

Jumping' Jacks looks cool with those drop targets hiding those gobble holes. There is only one other game I can think of that had both features.

Some better pictures, just finished touching up the backglass tonight.

Playfield has automotive clear coat, I have to re-do it in the future, it was real bad condition when I got it.

In May 2017, I was fortunate to pickup a 1967 Bally Surfers single player zipper flipper from a nice family in Bradford, PA. The game was a prized possession for their kids and the neighborhood kids and I promised to give it a deserving restoration. untitledq (resized).pnguntitledq (resized).png

I immediately breezed through the teardown and rebuild in a couple months but I never fixed a couple stumping issues that prevented the game from playing. My focus to complete Surfers was quickly overtaken by the desire to find more 60's Bally gems. As my collection of projects swelled, Surfers sat looking pretty but waiting to be fixed and played.

Fast forward 2 years to last month and in a spat of bravado, I offered to bring Surfers to the August 16th "Island Party" themed season launch event of The Fitton Center for Arts in Hamilton, OH. My wife is a mosaic instructor for the past 4 years at The Fitton and my son also started working there earlier this year. The launch party attracts over 1,000 members, guests and soon-to-be new members to preview all the cultural offerings at The Fitton and this is the second year that pinball will have a showing. The big question was did I have the ability to get Surfers ready for the masses?

I am happy to report that I pushed through and my restored Surfers is now ready for prime time. Problems addressed included: finding / fixing the stuck switch that caused the 0-9 unit stepper coil to lock on and a complete teardown and cleaning of all steppers. The biggest head scratchier was that pressing the left flipper button would tilt the game. Suspecting a short somewhere in the harness, I tried a direct jumper but ultimately replacing the flipper coil solved the problem. I also did my first ever high tap and the game has peppy play.IMG_2117 (resized).JPGIMG_2117 (resized).JPGIMG_2118 (resized).JPGIMG_2118 (resized).JPGIMG_2119 (resized).JPGIMG_2119 (resized).JPG

The eagle-eyed Bally aficionados will notice the yellow insert light on the right side of the apron. My Surfers does have the installed Add-A-Ball relay but I have not explored how it actually functions.

This is the first time I have taken one of my games to a public event and I'm excited to see if any older patrons remembers Surfers from their youth or if younger players can appreciate the coolness of zipper flippers and the Actual Reality of electro mechanical pinball.

I'll take plenty of pics at the event this Friday and report back on how many plays it racks up.

Good luck at the August 16th event. Excellent restoration! Looks fantastic!

I think that Surfers has the best flow of all of Zale's zipper flipper designs as well as the most appealing Kelley art package.

Yeah it looks like it is dimpled up on you. I love the colors on that playfield though, especially the diamond pattern at the top. Nice work, enjoy it!!

Not sure how much is dimpled vs minor imperfections in the clear coat. I didn't bother to block sand the final two coats as it was already substantially better than when I started and have plans to redo the whole playfield in the future. This will be my first major dive into playfield restoration and winter is a far better time to do it as I anticipate it will take several weeks if not a few months. Since clear coating is the first step in a playfield overhaul, I'm not wasting time here and get to enjoy the game in the meantime.

Here is my latest restoration now complete. Not always that excited about this era of 2-inch flipper games but this one hits the mark. Definitely a lot of fun sometimes a bit frustrating and definitely makes you keep hitting the start button! I try to avoid full repaints but in this case, the cabinet was way too far gone from a bad repaint.

Nice job on the webbing, is the door a reproduction? Considered buying one for my Hearts and Spades, which isn't too bad but the new one shown on PBR looks way to shiny if that makes sense.

No it's an original. Close inspection would reveal a little bit of pitting but it is straight.

Had to scrape off all the old clear finish in the natural wood areas, top arch, shooter Lane and flipper area. Lots of work here. Sanding, multiple coats of oil based polyurethane and final clear coat.

Picked this up yesterday. Who else here has one? Only two of twenty one listed on Pinball Owners is in the US. This one was in France, but made it back home. It's in nice condition. I don't think I'll be keeping it around though. Not really my cup of tea.

It really looks great. I didn’t think anything could look as cool on this game as the dark blue pop bumper caps lit up but those clear red caps are awesome looking.

Good catch. Amazing how you can look at something 50 times and miss the obvious.

#11843 4 years ago

Now that Space Mission is done, except for the missing post rubber. Picked up the next project, 1952 Twenty Grand. The play field was stripped by the previous owner. I just cleaned the PF with Naptha and a microfiber cloth. Someone has done pretty sketchy touch ups. Don't know if I should start a new thread, or post question here. There is no clear coat, and I am concerned about harming original paint trying to strip bad touch up. Could use some advice.

PBR, eBay, and pinball rescue all have full sets I looked and couldn’t find individual parts. Pin rescue might be willing to sell you the individual part though since he already does it with other machines

#11849 4 years ago

Thanks, will check with them, causse if I buy a full set, for me it's:
Full set price + expensive shipping taxes + import taxes
Which makes it a very expensive part
