I just acquired these 2 zipper flipper Ballys: Surfers and Rocket III, both circa 1967. The former appears to be fully functional. The Surfers backglass is well-preserved (indeed, it appears to be blemish-free) whereas the Rocket III backglass is shot. Fortunately, Bgresto reproduced Rocket III's backglass (depicted below) last year so I ordered one. These interesting Ted Zale designs ought to clean up well and provide a couple of fun summer projects.

I never know whether a new EM game purchase is more suited for the thread dedicated to newly-acquired games or this EM thread. Needless to say, I decided that our EMers would best appreciate these games, even in their unmolested condition.

ZNET, that Surfers is stunning! What do you think of the gameplay? Ted Zale was so creative, a pinball mad scientist.

ZNET that Surfers looks absolute amazing! Congratulations! I am super jelly on that one!

I like the geometry and ruleset on Surfers. I rank the gameplay high. Attached is the flyer, which outlines the game's many features.

Surfers will just need a good cleaning, rubber replacement, refinishing of legs/coin door, and cabinet touch-ups. Mechanical tweaking will be relatively minor. The posted photos show the game in its condition upon acquisition, prior to cleaning/polishing, so this one should turn out especially nice.

I like that naughty pelican and the expressions on the backglass characters! Looks like a cool and fun game.

What kind of electroplating did you try? I'm planning to try galvanizing my parts after cleaning them to prevent rust. (when I'm back from vacation)

OK. So what did you use to polish? Everything turned out so clean and shiny!

Just finished shopping my very first EM! A Twin Win.
I've got a bit more mechanical work to do but the game functions fully and is a blast to play ... especially as a two player

Stripped the top, washed all the posts, added new rubbers, all new bulbs, etc.
Also cleaned the playfield using Super Clean and followed that with 2 coats of canuba
Plays great!

Here's a link to a good video demonstration of a Bally Surfers (not mine):

Below are 3 more photos of the Surfers I just picked up. Zale was indeed a creative designer. His style is distinctive.

I been trying to not shop and haven't for months. My brother keeps finding me games that make my heart drop when I always seem to miss his message for 12 hours or so... This one should clean up nice, I'm pretty sure I love him.

Nickel plating, very much a homebrew effort. There are a lot of YouTube videos on the topic and I feel I could get better results with more prep work, but when it is all said and done, most stuff polished out.

Already posted my pic a few posts back but there is nothing cuter than a Miniature Schnauzer ON an EM Pinball.

I'm still tweaking my Twin Win so it sits in the living area near the sofa. Shiloh thought it looked like a great place to explore!

Got it. I think galvanizing would be easier than chrome or nickel plating. At least I'll find out soon.

I think I forgot to post when I got this little icy beauty a short time ago - she is a little rough around the edges but that is only skin deep. She plays great and with a little paint-and-polish will look like a champ once more!

Two year search came to an end last Thursday. I’m thrilled. But now I have to determine what game to sell, thinking of Buckaroo.

That’s the one from Mr Pinball the other week. I had inquired about it but just a little to pricey for me. Very nice machine and would have been the first AAB to keep in the collection.

#10976 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

Looks as though the kick-out wear has been touched up. I have yet to see a Dimension or 2001 which escaped wear below the kick-out holes. Very nice example, for sure, of drop target nirvana.

#10977 5 years ago

That's a really nice "Dimension", Frank.
You can make room by selling me your "Pin-Up"!

#10978 5 years ago

One of my personal dream machines. Good luck with that Dimension, what a gorgeous playfield. You scored on that one!

#10979 5 years ago
Quoted from ZNET:

I've had a dozen or so Dimensions with a couple having very minimum Kick-out wear, and actually one
having virtually any, which of course is the one elected to remain in the game room..

That's an exceptional example, which likely had minimal use before you acquired it (or perhaps a NOS playfield installed at some point). However, if you look closely at Frank's game, you can see the touch-ups (still a wonderful example). The kick-outs, as designed, were simply too powerful for these playfields to survive without some evidence of wear over time.

Your keeper clearly exists in, pardon the pun, a different dimension than the general population of such games.

#10983 5 years ago
Quoted from Grayman_EM:

Yes, all so true, and the 2001 that I once had I believe hadn't enough wear to say so. That machine I
should have kept just because of its front to rear condition..

Quoted from jrpinball:

So you've gone way beyond even this:

This machine pretty much was between science and superstition, and way beyond your imagination..
Back in the 90s, I was picking up machines regularly, and I remember not only pleased with the $80.00
that I gave them, but they were extremely pleased to have it removed from the kitchen of their mobile
home.
BTW- I sometimes still enjoy watching Twilight Zone with "Shadow Play" probably being my favorite..

Quoted from ZNET:

However, if you look closely at Frank's game, you can see the touch-ups (still a wonderful example).

Yes, after carefully rechecking, I do see touch ups on Franks.
I had this machine for quite awhile, and probably before anyone cared about replacing the playfield.
I'm pretty sure it either hadn't been on route very long, or it was in an establishment where it got
very little play, or both.
I'll have to check if an old pinball buddy has the 2001 that I once had. If it had wear, it would have
stood out. That machine was pretty much A1 from front to tail..

#10984 5 years ago
Quoted from Mopar:

but they were extremely pleased to have it removed from the kitchen of their mobile
home.

I'm glad you told the story, because I was going to say that between you and me, we know this game is just "trailer park trash"!

Quoted from cantbfrank:

I thought the bumpers didn't look right, but they're easily changed out.

#10986 5 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

Actually, this very possibly may have became the case if they hadn't spotted my
small Penny Saver ad at the time. I'm not sure how it got there, but I remember they
didn't seem to fond on it being in their kitchen. Soon after I showed up, one said
that they had never heard of anyone wanting pinball machines, leading me to maybe
believe that to them, it wasn't much more than trash..

"One man's trash is another man's treasure." Certainly very true in this instance.

It always surprised me how bland (by comparison) the artwork on 2001 was compared to Dimension. I’d be curious to know the story behind that.

You’d think they would have used the better art on the machine they knew would sell the most units, or at least keep artwork mostly congruent throughout the different models of the same game to save money on screening/artist labor, etc.

I like 2001 artwork.

#10990 5 years ago

Two add-a-ball/replay comparisons that are absolutely no contest: "Dimension" over "2001", and "Capt. Card" over "High Hand". Both the add-a-ball versions are far superior.
"2001" artwork is definitely weaker than "Dimension" as well. Especially with the guy in red tights with the load in his pants on "2001". I do think the borderless plastics on "2001" are pretty cool though. Both replay versions don't reset the targets after completion.

#10991 5 years ago

I'm not gonna do it. Right on Jr!

#10992 5 years ago

The nice thing about the the wear marks around the kick out holes on Dimension is that they are usually not that visible to the player. Since my games are set up side by side , you really have to look for it to see them.

#10993 5 years ago

I'm with Electrocute. I like 2001's artwork better than dimension. Not a fan of the girls head on Dimension. Looks like she just walked out of a beauty salon

I've had both games and they're equally great.

The subjective nature of art, I guess. Everyone has their own opinion. I feel Dimension is superior but I wouldn't turn down a 2001 either, it's just no where near as beautiful.

#10998 5 years ago
Quoted from Electrocute:

Not putting it down really. It's a good game in it's own right, but in many cases, the add-a-ball versions are said to be lacking. I think the two I mentioned are better because of the resetting drop targets. "2001" has completely different art than "Dimension", which is unusual. It's not bad really, but "Dimension" looks better to me.

#10999 5 years ago

I consider both 2001 and Dimension to be among the best drop-target EMs. The art package on both games is indeed compelling.

For my collection, I opted for 2001 because I find Dimension too easy and the resetting targets as inconsequential on this title. However, I understand why some prefer Dimension.

2001... on 3 ball play... I get all the drops down 1 in 10+ games. The games location is the Ann Arbor Pinball Museum
The resetting is not he issue, since collecting 300 instead of 50 for the kickout holes is the goal.
