How's that Army Navy restoration going?

I saw an Army Navy in a collection last weekend. Probably will be the only time I will see one in person.

Yes, made a new back glass. but that inspired me to keep going. Redid the entire playfield, cabinet to do in the spring. I'll send before and after pics in a day or two if you're interested. The art work is done, and it's out getting clear coated today. Yes, I know...I hate clear coat on an EM too, but this one needed it.

Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

The only time I personally own duplicate games are for restorations.
However, It is easier to do duplicate restorations while they are side by side, not just sitting on storage for decades. Bulk deals do happen for identical titles. I just did one for 2x Gators and 1x Alligator, among other games. In some rare cases I buy for "Frankenstein" builds as not all games can always be saved the due to severe damage or missing parts.

I could not agree more! I have two Target Alpha's next in my restoration que. The seller had two machines in storage for a couple of years and most likely never plugged them in since they were bought for another purpose. I had my pick, and just my luck, I would have picked the most troubled one. So I took both. Hopefully can make one, or maybe two great machines when I'm done.

Just finished this up the other day. Now resides in my game room. Basket case 5 years ago. Cabinet was quite rough-think bondo and repaint. Thanks to Dave (boilerman) for tips on the webbing. Really happy with the results and fun game.

Conventional wisdom is that there are no more than 20 Rockola Army Navy examples known in the USA and that most of them are the later painted gold-top versions, produced in 1935. The one in my collection is an earlier natural wood "brown-top" version, released in late 1934. The paint on the gold-top version was a modification by the manufacturer in a perceived attempt to reduce dust, which Rockola feared could interfere with the football transport mechanism. The paint did nothing to affect the mechanicals, which actually worked just fine on the original version.

Yours is perhaps the 21st; however, your game in Texas means one fewer game in England. Thank goodness it traversed the Atlantic safely.

I suspect that a half dozen more examples survived outside of the USA. As you know, by 1935, dry cell battery-powered games were the norm. Purely mechanical Army Navy was rendered obsolete by the competition and relatively few were made.

Most visitors who play Army Navy swear that there's a hamster inside a caged wheel powering the marvelous action. My favorite feature is landing a ball in a field goal hole, causing the football to travel laterally and activate the diverter so that the score awarded is 3 points versus the 6 points awarded by the alternative drop hole for touchdowns. Of course, one must be positioned within 40 yards of the goal posts for the field goal to activate, unlike today's real life football games with 50 and 60 yard successful attempts.

I'll be interested in following your restoration.

This happened today. I pick it up Monday. It will looks nice next to the 1948 Buccaneer I just bought from O-din that should arrive in a week or so.

Congratulations on acquiring a nice example of one of the best woodrails. Neyens himself purportedly crowned Queen of Hearts to be his most successful design.

Thanks guys! I went in this place to look at a Herb Silvers restored "Sittin Pretty" and ended up with the Queen of Hearts. I called O-din and Bob Herbison (both respected woodrail owners) and they both said "Get Queen of Hearts!" So I played a few more games on it then 2 became 10 and 10 games became 30 and I was hooked on the replays, 1-6 sequence, getting full houses and 4-5 of a kinds from the gobble holes. This game is sooooo much fun to play.

I particularly like the underrated rollunder feature, flanking the pop bumper cluster. It's difficult to find this title with a decent playfield. Your example looks like a survivor.

On topic of having multiple of a title... Have 3x Royal Flush and 3x Buccaneer all in really good condition to mint, and all play very much different. Finding the game with the best kinetics, taking that info and configuration and finding how to dial in and properly micro-adjust things on a game is much easier when you have multiples set up. Also, having the same title on various locations also makes it interesting to see which one gets played more by people. In all, there are as many reasons or more to have same title times-X than to not. Congrats on the many folks that find a title, love it, restore them side by side, and ultimately find and keep the best for their needs.

My latest acquisition: Hot Line!

Question for the group: I've never seen one of these with a blue cabinet, but the speckling and the stencils look original. Can anyone confirm that Williams made blue Hot Lines? If I were to re-finish the cabinet in the future, should I match the blue or go with classic white?

Come to think of it, the backbox stencils are upside down, the sides are on a weird angle and the front stencils are missing entirely. Probably a re-paint.

Never seen one before like that, so could be. But... I confess I do kinda like the blue on the aquatic theme.

neat game, that hot line. Not a bad player, and one of the few that has 'letters' for the rollovers. Game worth having.

It is (arguably) the first game with a dot matrix display, all done with mid-60's EM technology. I'm really excited to get it working again.

I kinda like it too. Maybe it's an early production test cabinet? Would it be a restoration faux pas to repaint it that same blue?

#9991 1 year ago
Quoted from TopMoose:

Not at all! Since it's already a repaint (we think?) no harm in another redux.

With care (and a bit of luck), it is possible to achieve "better than new".

Added a working Williams 8 Ball to the line-up this weekend. Not in great condition, but very playable and a tough one to find in the Upper Midwest. Hopefully having this working example will help me sort out all of the "hackery" that was done on the other basket case 8 Ball that I have. The goal is to bring that one back to life and find a good home for it.

In the meantime, I find 8 Ball to be a lot of fun to play - even more so when playing against someone. It's an enjoyable 2 Player game that keeps track of the pocketed pool balls as you progress through the game (they don't reset at the end of the ball in play). Player 1 plays solids and Player 2 stripes.

Thanks! I had to make two trips for it because the pinhauler was in the shop. I went to see it and pay for it Friday afternoon and picked it up Saturday morning. The seller seemed like a nice enough guy, but I didn't want to risk losing the game by waiting until Saturday.

There's a bunch of interesting games popping up on Craigslist in our area lately. Oh to have more more money and more space...

If it was still available Saturday I would have pursued it. Glad it found a good home though.

To be honest I haven't see much of anything in quite awhile that raises my heart rate. Lot's of $700-$800 marginally interesting games. 8-Ball was the best bang for the buck by my tastes in a long time.
