i sold my 4 square and got a astro, i liked astro but the game play wasn't as good As 4 square. i have been on the hunt for a nice 4 square ever since and can not find one. i now keep both until i know which is the better player. lesson learned.
I've never played one, but when I saw that episode of Kolchak a few weeks ago I knew I had to have one. We all have our own reasons for wanting to get certain pinball games.

it is a great game IMO, i never owned a game longer than the 4 square. i only sold it because i had a really nice offer and had a line on a Astro. i thought the astro had better art and had almost the same game play. i was wrong 4 square was a much better game. if the one you get is really nice and you decide to part with it down the road let me know.
I like the look of 4 Square better than Astro myself and it looks like a real fun game to play. This one should clean up nicely and I won't have any problem bringing it back to life. It's all but a done deal but I'm still waiting for pics of the other game I'm getting with it before we finalize it.
I like short flipper games, and besides Bally's zipper flippers, this appears to be one of the last ones.
Always have wanted a 4 Square, once of the first wedgeheads I saw pictures of and wanted based off of that. Still have never played one. I love the weird backglass art on that game. Unfortunately the playfield is pretty bland cosmetically (especially compared to that backglass) but the gameplay mechanics seem great. One day I'll find a nice one.
Quoted from boilerman:here is the dimension i got from pinsider "Marp84" a little while back, with the help of my buddy Cliff.
After good cleaning and a few minor touchups it turned out to be real nice original.
now to set it up next to the 2001 and see which one is the better player. the looser gets SOLD
Interested to see which one you pick. A lot of people have their replay/add-a-ball favorites but it seems that 2001 vs. Dimension is always the hardest choice for most. Both great games with great, but different, artwork. Makes it a tough choice when they are so different but both so good.
This one may not be collector quality, but it is good enough for me. Nice original condition and the real nice price. It will give me something to do.
Quoted from presqueisle:I have to give Bigdaddy1 (Robert) a big thank you here. Just picked this up and plugged her in. 100% out of the box, and it was literally packed in a box. Had to take out about a hundred screws, but it survived perfectly intact from Utah.
Congratulations! That's one game I was tempted to get because I could have picked it up locally but I need to sell a couple of games first. Robert's about 40 minutes drive from me.
I have the Palooka that I got from O-din who got it from Robert. Plays great and is a fun AAB.

The very small silver lining of this whole flood thing and taking all my games apart is getting to check out and appreciate the cabinet condition of the nicer games, unfortunately for better or for worse they all get mostly hidden when put into their rows.
Even if some will brag, it's not often you see something nicer than this from 1955.
Wasn't even sure I wanted this thing when I was about to buy it for $200 but with a playfield and backglass to match it probably ended up being one of my better buys, especially since the game is so damn fun. I remember when I first got it I used to come down to the basement just to spend upwards of an hour playing it and only it which was a great surprise.
The top of the Gottlieb woodrail era. Multiple playfield specials. Love it!
Isn't there a thread that's basically all about you and a flood? Your post would of fit in nicely there.
Quoted from pinwiztom:since that last post was mostly about a woodrail
maybe the woodrail topic thread.
Don't mind the peanut gallery Tom, they mean something else. I figured woodrails still fit nicely in the EM category though, I think the woodrail thread was just for the woodrail fanatics sick of all the metal-rail discussion inbetween woodrail posts rather than the other way around. That thread is nice though to see it all in one place. I wasn't sure if I would like owning one at first but quickly was glad I did.
Quoted from pinwiztom:4 Square is Sam Harvey's favorite from that era.
But I prefer Astro myself.
For that playfield layout I'd rather have Star Trek, because.. Star Trek! oh and the 1,000,000+ scoring on the backglass.
Yeah well, I don't see Star Treks popping up left and right for sale. Except the newer ones the modern collectors are trying to get rid of.
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:Update on my reveal. The machine is paid for and wrapped up for STI. I will reveal what I am getting the minute it is loaded up on an STI truck. My guess is mid next week it will be on a truck.
It's mid next week, time to reveal!
i would pay a pretty penny for a real nice 4 square or trade a "A" title for one...........just saying!
Quoted from Coyote:Shouldn't "4 Square" support 4 players? Just out of symmetry?
And cover up that awesome backglass? At least there are four score reels

Oh, good point.
Glad to hear 4 Square getting some positive comment. Was my favorite game at the the roller rink as a teen, and was the first game I bought when getting into this hobby just over a year ago and will be the last game I sell. It is not in perfect condition, some small back glass issues, and has the stupid white latex cabinet paint job. I am hoping to strip the latex someday. But play it 2 to 3 times a week.
interesting the astro vs 4 square - i had owned a few 4 squares over the years and they didn't last long in the collection.
had an astro imported (i'm in australia) and did it basically for the art, would be up there with my all time fave backglass.
as a player it's okay but have probably spent more time with a beer in my hand just admiring that amazing gordon morison art.

Glad to see the bumper caps found a perfect new home!

Nice work Dave.
What bugs me is how nice that game was for previous owner to let it get so exposed. I know it happens but still......
I've had two games that come to mind like that where the interiors were clean enough to eat off of but the exterior had been exposed to long storage in a chicken coop in one instance and a damp sunny storage shed in another.

mike from what i gather it was taken apart and stored with
no pf glass on it and the bottom of the head got wet and rotted away.

All I can say is ... Bravo!
Nice work on the Surf Champ! Real fun machine to play too. Curious to see how the rest turns out. Have you found a donor head yet?

yes i found a head from a surf champ
That is one sweet job on that Surf Champ. If I ever actually buy a pin, Surfer/Surf Champ is at the top of my list. Fond memories of that one for me.

Nice work Dave.
It's amazing how much the colors pop after you're restore

Looking at the before after, looks like in the after, all of the aqua has been changed to blue.
Quoted from Darcy:Looking at the before after, looks like in the after, all of the aqua has been changed to blue.
nothing was changed.
what color do you get when you mix blue and "nicotine yellow"?
