Check out some more close up pictures of Nick's amazing condition EM wedgeheads. Can you tell the difference of what games are painted and what are original paint?

Sing Along and Atlantis are original.... most of his are original with some touch ups.
Wish I could have been there to meet you in person.... the first guy to welcome me into the hobby!
I'll be there soon to pick up a Sky Jump from Nick.

Corral looks like an Add a Ball but is a replay game.

Here's the Corral I bought off Nick over 15 years ago that is no longer in my collection.

I drove to Nick's with my buddy Rich who lives just 2 miles from my home in NJ. Rich also has a Corral and other early 1960's wedgeheads in his collection. If I get urge to play a Corral I can always take a ride over and get my fix. Corral is a tough to beat player and can frustrate a player with its funky lower playfield design and flipper arrangement.

Think outside the box. Wedgheads are a no brainer but you got to add some diversity to your collection.

the 1 to 10 are the rollover numbers on the playfield. so as you rollover the numbers they light on the lower backglass. once you get all 10 the special lights on the playfield.

Nice Cosmos! I recently got one that I need to get up and running. I really like the black cabinet art package they used on the early production machines.

Anyone know why they switched back to a white base color in the later production games? If I decide to redo the cab I might do it in black since it looks cool and really fits the space theme. Instead of black speckles on white you get white speckles on black which end up looking like stars.

I have owned a few Em's and many early SS pins and one thing I have noticed that is totally a mystery to me is the condition of PF's. I mean 95% of all the 30-50 year old Em's appear to have PF's that are in far better condition than most SS pins that are only a few years old.... I know that the older pins were coated using lacquer rather than the clear coat of today; that being said, it appears the lacquer was a much more durable and lasting medium so why would they move away from it???? Cost? Difficulty in application or what? Just curious is all. Does anyone have a definitive answer?????

Yeah...the artwork and coloring it real nice. The game play takes some getting use to because of the flipper arrangement with the kick out hole and post. Here are some pictures before I quickly cleaned the playfield.

Still nice. Even before the cleanup.

Idiot EM question. The only EM I've ever owned was a Capt Fantastic, and it didn't have any of those 'mushroom' looking things that are Yellow and Red in that game there - what are those?

They are some type of bumper. When a player hits this bumper it makes a switch and scores accordingly. Bally started using this kind of design and the yellow score reels in the early 1960's on their games.

My opinion is that it was a cultural shift that occurred at the same time pinball evolved from EM to SS.

Video games started coming out at the very same time and operators quickly found they could make more money with less effort routing video games and that started changing their priorities.

Before video games operators were inclined to maintain their pinball games well to keep them attractive, playing well, and earning well. As other amusement games came into fashion (video games) and the effort needed to maintain them went way down so did the consideration(efforts to keep a game nice) to keep pinball earning.

The advent of DC power to flippers and pop bumpers with the SS games contributed more wear to the playfields but we have all seen decent examples of early SS games where the operators did take adequate care of the games and it showed in their condition.

If you can, please ignore the picture below of the glorious original Gottlieb coin doors. I had started a post a couple of days ago to include them and thought I backed out of that but it appears they stayed in my cache and uploaded here. It was door day at my house this weekend. I have two El Dorados I'm working on and both doors cleaned up exceptionally well. Aren't they pretty?

This is another possible answer.

Lower cost paints and production, in the video game invasion era. May have led to lower quality paints. To add to MikeO there were also changes to chemicals in paints in the late 70's, then in the 80's. Some solvents that contained harmful ingredients had to be removed.

I can see where the epa restrictions could have played into it.

I would put a lot of money down on this.
Working on old railroad equipment, I come across signal equipment that left the factories back itn eh early 1900's, that was coated in Lead paint.
Holy cow, that stuff is *AWESOME*, other than the health hazards. In places where that paint was sealed up against the metal well - it STILL, almost a hundred years later, holds on tight, and keeps the metal from rusting, and is very difficult to completely clean off. It just turns into butter-like substance and 'smears' back over the bare metal areas.

Wouldn't surprise me if chemicals used back then helped protect against the balls better than later paints..

Like the artwork very much
by the same unknown artist (Milton Caniff swiper)
who did lots of work for Bally and Williams back in the mid 60s.

Wow, the Card Whiz BG is simply awesome! Gottlieb may have (in some peoples eyes) slipped a little when they entered the SS arena but, their artwork damn sure did not miss a beat from EM's well into the late eighties SS pins.

Just completed a full resto on a GTB Volley which I picked up a couple of months back. It was in pretty sad overall condition (severe nicotine staining), flaking bg & non operational including some poorly executed hacks. Principal issues affecting gameplay were a ceased bcu lever, a stuck ball return switch, jammed centre pop mechanism & poor flipper performance.
Never encountered a machine where a previous owner had literally oiled everything I assume in an endeavour to resolve the operational issues. The clean up required some effort.
Anyhow machine now working 100% & plays really well.

i have said this many times but i will say it again. Volley is one of the most underrated wedgeheads hands down. if it had a better/different art package it would be a game like atlantis or abra. everyone would want one. but it always gets over looked due to the tennis theme.

Totally agree. What a great drop target game.

#7848 7 years ago

One of our favorites. Looks easy to beat, but not so. And when all but one or two targets are down, you understand the name "Volley".
Great looking restoration, Wayner!

Here is a 1954 Gottlieb woodrail "Hawaiian Beauty" we at Treasurecove Pinball restored.

TreasureCove spent over 16 weeks in the restoration of this fine machine! All of the wood was refinished, and the outside cabinet was repainted back to their original graphics and colors, as close to original as possible. All of the contacts, mechanics were cleaned adjusted with replaced flipper and coil parts. The backglass and playfield plastics are screen-printed new, with original pop bumper caps. Covers and coin entry parts were rechromed. Playfield was super nice original and had very little restoration before we clear-coated it.
Many thanks goes to Steve at Pinball Resource for his expertise with this project.

Unlike a new Stern, yes it had the latest "software code" from Gottlieb when it was released!LOL
