I'll be picking the exact shade tomorrow, at the PC shop. But I have a vision of what I want in my head. I want a deep red, like heart blood.
Something like this.

Hmmm trying to envision.... Struggling with the armor color on mine!

This is a nice color, illusion cherry.

It is just too much black imho. Everything blends together. But then I don't like blacked out cars either usually.

The illusion Cherry is what I think CoolCat used on his. It looks nice, but wasn't the look I'm going for. Plus I don't want to copy his as it still lives in my town But it is about the right shade of red.

This one, I think would look amazing in person.

I'm leaning toward black, purple and glow (UV) green with mine. A very sloooooow work in progress.

I am sure it will look awesome when you finish it!

Ok, so I went with Fractured Cherry, which is a lot like illusion cherry. Maybe the same color. I’ll have it back in about three weeks.

Good choice. My local powder guy has a turn around time of 5 days. Your guy must be super busy.

Everywhere here is like that or worse. We have a LOT of people moving here from California and Texas. The housing market exploded! My home tripled in value in the last four years and they are building over 300 apartment units within 2 square miles of my place.

I have a 3 week lead time for on-site pinball repairs and my in shop turn around time, is about a year now.

It’s a good problem to have I guess, but nerve wracking as well. I don’t like having so many pins in my possession!!

The first coat of primer is on and has since been sanded to get the high spots. Oh and I ended up painting the back too.

Tomorrow I have a full day at the shop, so I should be able to make some descent progress.

How did you pull your decals so cleanly. It does not look like you sanded them off. Heat?

#2019 10 months ago
Quoted from guitarded:

Heat gun and a slow pull, Then followed up with Xylene to melt the glue off.

Speaking of Xylene, there was a life lesson in using it! I had the cabinet outside my shop, soaking the glue in xylene and scraping it off. When I was finished, I left the cabinet outside until the end of the day, then pulled it into my shop. Turns out, it had not vented off enough gas. When I came back in the next morning, the entire building smelled of Xylene and my two shop cats were high as a kite.

#2020 10 months ago

I got an early start this morning. Trying to get the cabinet prep finished before the storms roll in this afternoon.

The body has its first and possibly only coat.

*edit*
I found a rough spot under the left flipper. So I will let the paint harden for a day or two, then I will block sand the area. It wont be in an area that should require repainting.

I'm joining the club! Just got my Elvira. I'm planning on restoring it.

For sure I'll be getting pop bumper covers and plastics. I'm considering new ramps but I may see if I can clean these up and add new decals (any thoughts based on my pictures). I'm also considering a play field swap but that might be down the road. Most of the major wear is near the pop bumpers. Any recommendations on where to buy plastics. Any thoughts on if this playfield?

The side rails have that damaged spot on both sides from the head. This seems to be common on Elvira's. Have people had good luck repairing this? I'm not sure if I should just buy new side rails. I'm planning on powder coating legs, side rails and coin door due to spray painted look.

There is some damage on the cabinet near the ball plunger. Any recommendations for black and yellow paint to touch it up? I haven't done cabinet touch ups yet.

I'm going to replace the LEDS and rubbers. I was thinking of going with comet LEDS. (Is the LED OCD board a thing for this game?) What rubbers do people recommend for this game? I typically use Titans but think they may be too bouncy for this game. Maybe just the Marco ones. Thoughts?

First off welcome! There's a lot to unpack there in your post so..

Quoted from DragonLord:

For sure I'll be getting pop bumper covers and plastics.

It looks like you're missing several bolts that hold the pop caps on, I would suspect that they are sheared off and stuck, that's what happened to mine. I am unable to remove one of them, hopefully you won't have any issues.

Quoted from DragonLord:

I'm considering new ramps but I may see if I can clean these up and add new decals (any thoughts based on my pictures).

Your ramps are cracked, I would clean them but not waste time or money replacing the decals. You could replace the ramps with new ones, it is a long process but well documented and has video support too. Or, you could use those and get Cliffy's or do both replace and add Cliffy's, I just replaced mine without the Cliffy's.

Quoted from DragonLord:

I'm also considering a play field swap but that might be down the road. Most of the major wear is near the pop bumpers. Any thoughts on if this playfield?

That's where most of the wear is on this pin, your damage is about average or higher for this game. A swap would be good but it's a lot of money and time, I'm on the fence with this too. Good luck!

Quoted from DragonLord:

Any recommendations on where to buy plastics.

CPR

Quoted from DragonLord:

The side rails have that damaged spot on both sides from the head. This seems to be common on Elvira's. Have people had good luck repairing this? I'm not sure if I should just buy new side rails. I'm planning on powder coating legs, side rails and coin door due to spray painted look.

If you're going to powder coat them, why not get new ones?

Quoted from DragonLord:

There is some damage on the cabinet near the ball plunger. Any recommendations for black and yellow paint to touch it up? I haven't done cabinet touch ups yet.

That's not "damage" per say it's was wrinkled decals that were cut out, mine is like that too and typical for the game. It looks like some one tried to spray paint it with the legs on, but I guess that depends on how you want to paint. The colors and the rest looks good so I don't know if you should replace the decals. I'm leaving mine because the colors are good and the new one look odd to me, I think Elvira's skin tone is off or something is different but that's an option if you're doing a full restore.

Quoted from DragonLord:

I'm going to replace the LEDS and rubbers. I was thinking of going with comet LEDS.

Comet all the way

Quoted from DragonLord:

What rubbers do people recommend for this game? I typically use Titans but think they may be too bouncy for this game. Maybe just the Marco ones. Thoughts?

I used Titan, it's all I use, I don't think they are too bouncy for the game but that's subjective.

#2028 10 months ago

Sprayed the legs while on the game... smfh.

I think you need to decide how in depth you want to go on the restore. If you are going to do a playfield swap, new ramps. Other wise clean and flame polish them. New cab decals if you are going to powder coat everything, and new side rails at the same time. Get a new coin door!

Before you know it, you will be down lotsa $$$$, but Elvira is worth it. She is the longest I have owned any pin. I have yet to start any major cosmetic restoration but she is still fun to shoot!

Looks like you are missing the plastic for the monster slide ramp and the light that attaches to it. I was missing that as well. I had to go hunting for the missing wire, it was in the harness but never made it up to the playfield. I had to do some rewiring as well as fabricate a bracket to hold the light socket to the ramp plastic.

Also, a post sleeve, several nuts and some broken plastics but the good news is it's all able to be fixed and you have an EATPM. Enjoy!

Cool story. I'd been watching this game at my buddies arcade and playing every week when I go in there to hang out. Every time I'm thinking, "I would love to fix this up and have it at my house".

Fast forward a year. I was wrapping up my a restore/mod fest on Lord of the Rings. Meanwhile my buddy that owns the arcade had been telling me if I ever sell LOTR, he wants it. We started working on a trade (He has 50 pins) and is highly attached to all of them. We are talking about what pins he would be willing to part with and he was struggling. I mentioned that "I haven't been bringing up the pins that I know he won't part with like Elvira".

A week later, he calls me and says "Hey do you still want Elvira". Of course I'm like, hell yeah. His distributor buddy was getting one in on trade that's in pretty good condition. Win - Win. My buddy gets a nice Elvira and I have an awesome game and a project.

#2034 10 months ago

Elvira is a great game and has gone up in value considerably. That being said, it is worth doing a high end restore to it if you have the time, skills and cash. You wouldn't be upside down on it like other titles.

I'm going with Comet for LEDs. What are peoples thoughts on the LEDs for the flashers in this title?

#2036 10 months ago
Quoted from DragonLord:

Comet as well. I have the mirrored CPR backglass and went to all cool white but, when I had the translite I had some colored LEDS and flashers. I found with the backglass white was the best way to go, at least for my tastes.

For the playfield I put green flashers in the slings because I have GID rubbers with UV bulbs under the plastics and I thought the green looked the best, otherwise it's all cool white.

I have pics, feel free to ask but I don't want to spam photos.

It's funny, the longer I've owned this pin the more I like it, all of my games are keepers, or at least that's what I think when I buy them but this one gets the most plays and is the simplest one of the bunch.

I replaced all the regular bulbs with LEDS but left the flashers alone. They are pretty great the way they are.

Tweak the colors a little behind the monster slide area (green) and by the party punch (red). A few greens behind the bottles above Elviras party punch and Norman's green beer on the back glass and it looks great.

Tomorrow I hope to put the vinyl on the head. I’ve also ordered red chrome trim to replace the old chrome from the metal speaker grill. I stole @coolcatpinball’s idea of painting the speaker panel red. The effect is very subtle and I like it.

Quoted from DragonLord:

What are peoples thoughts on the LEDs for the flashers in this title?

I run LED flashers in the backbox, but incandescent on the playfield. Reason being I spent way too long diagnosing why the 3 flashers behind Elvira on the translight don't light up very bright. I think they're just overdriving the transistor. So I switched them to LED and now they're SUPER bright. Too bright to use on the playfield IMO, but fine for the backbox since I'm rarely looking at the backbox while playing. Running LED flashers in the backbox makes the incandescent flashers on the playfield about 2x brighter since they have more current available. But they're still not as bright and harsh as LED flashers. Real nice combination I think.

Looks like you have a few projects waiting in the wings!

That is my Pinball repair/restoration shop. MOST of those pins are client machines. I currently have about a 1 year backlog of work. Only about 18 of the pins are mine and don't factor into my estimated wait time for repairs. I.E. I will get to mine when I can.

Quoted from pyrotech:

Looking good so far. What is the story with the Eight Ball?

That is a client's machine. It will be getting a full rebuild, the Eightball 2.0 code, Yoppsicles, Titan Rubber and new plastics.

Did you not fill, sand, and level the cabinet before applying the decals??

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

What was the point of taking the old decals off if you weren't going to do any of the prep work?

#2047 10 months ago
Quoted from djblouw:

I sanded, filled, sanded, filled and sanded and filled until it was good enough for me. Don’t like it, don’t worry. It won’t be in your house.

The bubble you highlighted was from the wet application method. It is since fixed. One spot is a run in the corner that wasn’t visible until the vinyl touched it. The rest, aren’t even visible in person.
