I also never used a shield, lol. It's pretty cool how are there so many different ways to approach this game.

Is this an Incantation or Ash of War?
It's an incantation. There's also a Dragon Communion Seal you can get that boosts the effect of it.

I actually crafted something today! I needed some Preserving Boluses to help against a certain optional and very difficult boss.

Do you have Erdtree Heal? It heals you and your mimic if they are nearby. That helped me get through it. There are probably other spells/incantations/items that can do the same thing.
