To help answer your question above, this is a copy and paste from baldtwit post:
“f you have a voltmeter, stick one probe on the BLK-WH wire (ideally use the transformer lug in case the issue is the BLK-WH wire), and use the other probe to poke along the circuit until you find where the 6VAC drops/disappears.”
The voltage is AC, that’s the two settings clockwise from the OFF on your voltmeter. The black terminal on your voltmeter is the COMMON (ground)
