Hey guys.

Picked up a project EBD machine and I will document bringing it back to life. I’m a home hobbyist so this will be an everyman type restoration. I’m so excited to get started.

It’s an early production game with white caps. Playfield is a bit worn but not horrible. Backglass has some peeling paint. The game is completely disassembled. The cabinet is empty except the power board and transformer. It came with a bin full of parts. The package included a new CPR Playfield and Shay backglass. Cabinet and head are decent. At some point I will likely strip and paint them but the initial phase will be to clean everything up and restore all the guts, swap the playfield, get it running and then play the hell out of it for a while.

At some point I will have a playfield and backglass for sale.

A few pics.

Head had some cream paint around the front and sides and I used a magic eraser and some alcohol to get rid of the paint. It came off nicely without disturbing the paint underneath. Yes the edges are worn but that’s ok for now.

You can see it here partway done.

Spent the day working on the cruddy and rusty coin door. Typical grunge. I cleaned it up, re wrapped the harness and added a missing chute light. The plastics cleaned up nicely with novus. I re grained the skin with a couple of abrasive pads.

The lighting gives odd reflections and dark patches but it's all shiny and it looks better in perso. I painted the inner skin with a silver paint as the raw metal looked cruddy and then I polished the pot metal of the coin chute at the bottom.

I just need to tie down the micro switches.

These Bally coin doors can really shine with some effort! Following this restore!

#6 5 years ago

I am debating on getting another playfield orctrying to touch mine up a bit...so if you sell the PF, please let me know.

Likewise, if you having any playfield painting tips, im all ears.

What kind/color of paint do you use on the playfield?

Thanks Dallas. I’m really happy with the way the door came out.

The point of the thread will be to do a restoration that most of us can pull off. I’m a desk jockey by day and while I have a lot of tools and stuff there is nothing in my garage that a typical guy who is used to working with his hands won’t have or won’t buy for a restoration. A motor with polishing wheels is nice for dealing with the various dull metal bits that come off the games. Thanks Dad for a bunch of cast of and duplicative tools. My dad had been a tool hoarder for years and I have two and three of a lot of things.

Daditude I won’t by touching up this pf at all since I have the repro. I will be selling the existing once I do the swap. Whether it’s better then yours.... who know. I will post some pics.

Existing playfield has some issues. Here are some pics highlighting wear areas. Original mylar is peeling. Still a nice start point for a restoration.

Following this resto thread!

I got lucky on my EBD playfield. Only some minor touchups needed when I bought it last year but some pretty bad cupping in a few inserts. I put a playfield protector in a couple months ago - cupping issues are now well hidden, ball trajectory is smooth and true, and it gives off that nice clearcoat sheen. I know a lot people don't like the protectors, but I've become a fan.

Looks pretty sweet from that angle. !

I have a repro playfield and will do the swap.. the existing could be a nice base of someone out there wants to do a resto or if a hardtop becomes available.

Today’s progress sees the completion of the coin door and installation on the cabinet. The cabinet is up on legs for the first time in who knows how long. The head is home where it belongs although the support seems a little unstable. I hammered the nails back down but the fact that they were a bit loose means I should probably pull them and replace with some long screws.

The shooter rod polished up very nicely.

The lockdown bar was badly rusted. I soaked it in evaporust which does a great job but the metal is pitted deeply. I may paint it or replace it but for now it’s in the game.

I painted the bottom power board and it looks nice. I am planning on a new rectifier board. The old one is bit cooked. One bridge is gone two fuse clips are black... the area around the diodes looks toasty.

A little progress tonight. Got the glass channels in, re grained the side panels and lock down bar and the flipper buttons installed. Polished the plates that hold the buttons in to a mirror shine.

I have been gone for the last week or so and am just getting back to it. Some small progress on replacing bad connectors. Both of these connectors were broken on one end and one also had every wire spliced with wire nust and a wire soldered to the board. The other one had a wire soldered to a pin. I cleaned all of that out and had to spend some time with the schematics. I did find an error in color coding in the schematics but after cross checking a number of things I got it all squared away. A few little things at a time.

One thing further guys. I know it isn’t sexy but replacing connectors is a relatively straightforward proposition. Even if you can’t solder or don’t want to try on the boards the connectors can be done with relatively inexpensive ratcheting crimpers available off amazon. I bought these for $23 and there are some that are less. They work perfectly. Make sure to buy ratcheting types.

IWISS SN-28B Dupont Terminal Ratchet Crimper 0.1-1.0mm ²(AWG28-18) for 2.54mm 3.96mm KF2510 connector

Connectors are available from the usual vendors. I went with great plains electronics.

Can't agree more. I was really nervous at the thought of cutting wires and re-pinning them into new connectors, but I got over it by spending a couple of hours with a ratchet crimper, spare wire, and a bunch of pins before doing the actual work on my machine. It's kinda fun after you get the hang of it, but really tedious doing hundreds of wires. I just lowered my "speed" expectations and committed to doing 2 connectors a day instead of trying to knock it all out in one session. Saved on my back as well, hovering over the cabinet. At one point was thinking about removing the entire harness set from the cabinet and doing the work sitting comfortably at my work bench.

Well said Mathazar. Slow and methodical. Cross check things with the schematics in case somebody before you messed with things.

Well worth the effort.

Been working on all the little details necessary to be buttoned up before firing it up for the first time. I cleaned up every last bad piece of wiring. I cleaned up grounds and finished the ground braid. I put in a new power cord, checked all the fuses and went though all the boards, replaced some bad connectors, and reflowed the header pins. I re-capped the squawk board and the solenoid board. If you saw my other post you will note that the mpu board was missing chips u9 and u11 so I added those (yeah it won’t do anything without those) as well as u2 and u6.

Ready to go...

Good luck with the power on! The inside of your cab looks nice and clean - puts mine to shame.

#23 5 years ago

And here we go... first time I tried to fire it up was when I noticed I was missing u9 and u11. It took about 10 days to get those and on boot up found that u8 was bad. I ordered the nvram replacement and that arrived today..

Installed and... we have life. ! There are still things to sort out but we are where we need to be. The volume pot seems to be flaky but the audio is strong and clear. The are little gremlins here and there but I have managed to play a bunch of full games on it...

Another one is brought back from the dead...

One of the displays was bad and I pulled it. I swapped it in the pace of another reflowed the header pins put it in and it works just fine.

Next step is to tear it all apart again to replace the playfield...

Then I have to decide if I will undertake a cabinet repaint.
