Documenting an Eight Ball Deluxe 1981 playfield swap with one of CPR’s latest. phillyfan64 has new plastics, drop targets, lamp sockets (bayonet vs wedge), mech rebuilds and more. We’re going with incandescent 44 for GI/visible areas and color matching the inserts.

This will be my first EBD swap so if anyone sees anything not right, please chime in. Tumbling, ultrasonic, and polishing all parts. This one is in good working shape with a few touch ups.

Few pics of the old and new and the parts needed to install on the rotisserie:

You will have to check with phillyfan64 about the old one.

#7 3 years ago

You move fast Dave. See all the toothpicks in the holes under those old plastics! I will probably sell the old playfield. It’s in fair shape.

#8 3 years ago

So you need to do any prep on the new cpr one? Like pre drilling etc?

#9 3 years ago

Prep includes filing the clear out of the rollover insert. Fortunately, EBD only has one.

#10 3 years ago

What’s the correct lamp screws? There’s a mix of both 6-32x3/8 hex heads and some philips screws.

Finding both examples online.

#11 3 years ago

Also of note, the new playfield is missing a lamp hole for the upper right corner. Maybe a production run change?

Running with it without and will use a double headed LED if too dark.

Note the extra hole that looks like wasn’t used on original. Covered and could be another area to add lighting.

People ran into that with the Hardtop as well. I believe it was indeed a production change.

People liked the additional lighting in the corner.

#13 3 years ago
Quoted from dmacy:

Bally had two "big" holes in their playfields.
1) top right.
2) bottom left.
The holes where used to "snap fit" the playfield to the dies and silk screening process.
OEM the lamp socket is stapled to the bottom part of the hole the...
the wire buss ran across the open hole to the "free" lug of the lamp socket.

#14 3 years ago

The later run nos playfields dont have the hole cut out. That’s probably what they copied.

#15 3 years ago

The later versions LE and 84 probably had the Hole not cutt out.

#16 3 years ago

Thanks all! Some of the barrels for the 8-32 T nuts were too large for the holes which has been common for new playfields. I ran short of 6-32 T nuts but will have a count when I have them all in. I use felt with a small bearing and washers to carefully set them in.

Running with the hex head screws. Ran the braided wire this afternoon. Need to solder and test but the lengthy part is over. Tried to keep it close to original run but cleaner.

Looks way better already. The old one was all different styles of sockets. This looks so much cleaner.

I always wondered what that hole was for. My Mata Hari has the same thing and it just looks out of place.

Silkscreening alignment, they put the PF down on pegs that go through those holes.

Small progress to share. Parts are being cleaned and tumbled. First batch has made it out after two days of tumbling. Happy with how they’re looking. I had a “helper”.

Started the soldering of lamp holders. Lots to go...!

Lamps are soldered in. Always a pain cleaning so solder takes to the mounts.

T nut count:

(9) 8-32 (Add two if you're upgrading areas noted here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/eight-ball-deluxe-cpr-playfield-swap/page/2#post-5876310)
(19) 6-32

What’s the trick to get solder to stick to the mounts? I always have trouble.

#28 3 years ago

I use a 150 watt gun to do this. You need thermal mass.

#29 3 years ago

Yes I find flux pen and turning up the heat helps.

#30 3 years ago

Just so you know, the dimples on these were poorly done...especially on the backside.

Double check everything before you screw anything down.

Thanks Bryan.

Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

Just so you know, the dimples on these were poorly done...especially on the backside.
Double check everything before you screw anything down.

Geez. What’s the point of them if they can’t get them right. I know the dimple for the left mini post on the top appears to be way off. That’s an important one.

#33 3 years ago

I would actually prefer undimpled playfields - that way any errors are solely my own.

#34 3 years ago

Bryan was right. They’re pretty far off for the switch actuators. Compared them to original, used my centering punch to dimple, predrill, center, and cinch down.

We ran into our first issue. We went with flat based bayonet holders. Assume our only option is different holders or use flat topped LED’s with or without condoms. And apparently there’s some issues with the LED’s in the chase lights?

Just change the sockets to the ones that are inbetween the flush and the insert style.

#38 3 years ago

Thanks. That’s what looks like we’re going with.

I messed up. Sorry! I forgot this came up about a year ago on the EBD club thread.

No big deal. If it’s pinball, it is never easy!

Flippers got rebuilt. Was time as seen by the stops.

Starting on replacing some of the “too tall” sockets.

Saucer mech is rebuilt after cleaning/tumbling and new sleeve and wrapper.

The new plastics are disappointing. The clear section that shows the smears is part of the clear plastic. We are putting the originals back on.

Pop bumpers are rebuilt with mostly new parts and wrappers.

Lowered lamp sockets are still pretty close.

Top side is mostly assembled. Sling plastics (new) still have protective plastic...

Looking great. We’ll get those sockets sorted out. CPR will be hearing from me about their plastics.

You’ll want to deal with the left mini post issue before the drop target bank is installed. I know we’re going to work on the bank anyway so that might be awhile. You might want to ask the group for help with the placement. You’ll have to drill all the way through for this one post. This would make me nervous. Glad I’m not doing it haha.

What is this kruzman kit you speak of?

There’s already a hole located that does look slightly off. I’ll get some comparison pics. The hard part is if we move the location, we’ll have the other hole still there.
