The first picture is from the J2 edge connector on an atari space riders. The second picture the original J2 along side a .156 Molex connector. Is the Molex a suitable substitution? It has slightly thinner dividers and the .156 pin is also wider than the pins in the original. The pins for the original AMP connector I cannot find anywhere.

Thanks,

I would not use the Molex connector. There’s too much risk of getting signals on the wrong pins. Others may feel differently or may have a source for new pins.

Did you look at Mouser Electronics or DigiKey electronics? You can call and give them the part number on the connector and let you know if it is active, retired or replaced with a new part #. They will also have the pin info for re-pinning if they find a replacement.

The spacing appears to be the same so it should work.

As far as width of the pins is concerned I don't think that will matter either unless for some reason the gaps between the fingers on the board do not align with the dividers in the connector, in which case a wide pin could bridge two fingers. I would slide the new connector on the board and check alignment.

I know somebody that might have a thousand or two sitting in a box near his desk at work.

They're gold plated but are the only ones I have. And I do remember they cost us an arm and five legs.
I'll look on Monday to see if they're still there.

G-P-E,

thank you. either post back on shoot me an pm. I am a bit concerned that I could bridge across to connections on the board and short something. There was a post somewhere that linked to someone on ebay selling what looked like the right connector and pins. I think purchase price was $80 or so - wow! Wanted something like $2 dollars per pin.

I believe the ones we have are a thickly gold plated contact (they were used for military equipment). Yes - they were horribly expensive even when we bought them roughly 10 years ago. When I get to work Monday, I will make sure they are the correct contact.
