Come on Wolfie! Release the tapes!
Quoted from boscokid:2007, 2012???? wtf seems like you guys were about 30-35 years too late to catch Van Halen
Well, if riding in a limo with your buds and getting hammered along the way and seeing them front row is too late, I'm okay with that.
Agreed. I saw some early shows but the final shows with Dave was unreal and was glad several new generations got to see this man in action.
At the last VH show I saw with my son there was this guy that smoked one joint after another the whole show. When the show was over he was still sitting there. He said he was waiting for his son. After further questioning his son was not at the show, he was just so wasted that he thought he was.
Quoted from Captainhook:After going through all my CDs over the weekend, I have seven of their albums. What about you guys?
I must be a Diamond Dave purist, I literally have zero albums from Sammy era (which I do like) but all VH prior including some vinyl
Quoted from Captainhook:After going through all my CDs over the weekend, I have seven of their albums. What about you guys?
I have 8, the original 6 + the “it is what it is” reunion album, and the greatest hits with the two new DLR songs from 1996.
Van Hagar kind of sucks but anything with EVH playing on it is probably worth listening to. Even that porno soundtrack he did.
Quoted from Captainhook:After going through all my CDs over the weekend, I have seven of their albums. What about you guys?
I still have the first two on vinyl, and the first six on CD. I bought A Different Kind of Truth on iTunes, but it just wasn’t the same without Michael Anthony on backup vocals and bass.
Quoted from Captainhook:After going through all my CDs over the weekend, I have seven of their albums. What about you guys?
Wait , they made more than 1
Quoted from zombywoof:it just wasn’t the same without Michael Anthony on backup vocals and bass.
You missed his bass playing?
hate to break it to you but he didnt play bass on allot of their records to begin with... Ed played it.
On most tunes he told him what to play anyways, on Fair warning and after Ed did allot of the bass himself.
Quoted from Elvishasleft:You missed his bass playing?
To be fair, I did lead with backup vocals.
Got a little bummed 2 weeks ago when the news broke. Instantly had the intro to Ain't Talkin Bout Love stuck on loop in my brain for 24 hours. But it was a kick in the ass needed to make a personal mix that's close to the heart. Better late than never???

Somethings wrong with your Shadow ... it’s gone all blue.

Ha, yeah it came all lit up like that when I got it. Just happy to have a Shadow. It's such a great player. Just like Eddie.
Quoted from CrazyLevi:A great tribute to EVH!
Awesome! I played than one my EVH set on the night he passed. Legendary riffs even 2 Live Crew recognized would make a great sample
Quoted from CrazyLevi:A great tribute to EVH!
This is hilarious. They all look horrified. Imagine their faces if they fast forward 30 years to WAP? I remember when 2 Live Crew was dangerous. Ha!

Sweet jesus... my brother came home with that cassette one day and I really had concern for his mental health because he liked it.
worst shit ever committed to tape... after every Bon Jovi record.
Here was a post from Wolf, man I felt this one

I met him at a Hollywood party once in the late 80s. I think it was a Kathy Ireland hosted party that Val had dragged him to but my memory, which has never been great, was a bit hazy from those times. I do remember he was sitting by himself drinking and smoking and looked totally bored. I was pretty starstruck but I worked up the courage to walk up and introduce myself as a fan. We talked about BTTF, Michael Jackson's Beat It solo and OU812. He asked me what my favorite VH song was and I'm pretty sure I said DLR era it's Mean Streets and on OU812 I liked AFU and Sucker in a 3 Piece. He laughed and slapped me on the back. It didn't last more than a minute or two but it was awesome.
I finally saw them live on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour with Vince Neil opening the show. It was probably the third best concert I ever saw...
Quoted from LOTR_breath:Two thoughts from that video. Damn, Sammy's looking old. And does Michael Anthony never age?
That horrendous hair transplant of his certainly stays young!
Sammy is well into his 70s so I'd give him a pass. If my dad drank as much as he did I'm sure he'd look worse!
Quoted from LOTR_breath:Two thoughts from that video. Damn, Sammy's looking old. And does Michael Anthony never age?
Easy to not age when you have made millions upon millions for just showing up and playing the bass.
Sammy is 73, I think he is holding up well considering. However I thought Michael has aged a lot recently. I was glad to hear Eddie and Sammy and I assume Mike made peace before Eddie's passing.
I can still remember in 1978 when my buddy slipped in this cassette of a new band in his badass 1970 Monte Carlo.Whoa who the fuck are these guys.Saw them numerous times the next few years at McNicohls arena in Denver. They were solid.Dave was the showman but Eddie was the star.
We lived the great life in the early 70s with Hendrix, then Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. Then there was the slack period in the mid to late 70s where disco took over everything. It was a depressing dead zone for music, although admittedly good stuff for partying excess. Then, same as you, one day late in the 70s the blasting sound of VH hit like a ton of bricks. It was like being reborn. I must have played that first VH album a thousand times, loud as I could get it.
Man even when Eddie plays in front a small crowd, something just takes over with any guitar he holds.
Quoted from LOTR_breath:I've been feeling sentimental about Eddie and VH in general. Dug up some more of my stuff for you guys to see! One day I need to tell the story of getting that DLR autograph...

Damn man you are lucky... i was too young in 1980 and 81 to see them but to me those were the two best tours where they were killin it.
There are a few boots around..

I was extremely lucky. Saw them twice in one week and it didn't cost me a dime. I was a freshmen in HS and my friend won a radio promo to see the show and meet the band backstage. We lived in Shreveport. Well, we saw the show but there was a mix-up and we were not allowed backstage. My friend called the radio station and raised hell, so to make it up to us, they offered us the same thing the following week in Beaumont. That's where the magic happened!

The Van Halen bros came to the same conclusion and cut his percentage at least twice. He was always just OK on bass, but from what I've read his biggest contribution (maybe the only significant contribution other than being a team player and a good guy) was his background vocals. Eddie was the best bassist in the band and usually did 2-3 tunes on the albums playing bass himself, per Sammy.

yah thats a fact... pretty sure Ed played most of Fair Warning bass himself.
I dont blame him.. easier to just do it yourself than spend a day showing someone how some crazy ass tune goes.
Even if he didnt play the bass I am sure he pretty much told him what to play.
Quoted from Jackalwere:When I saw the F.U.C.K. show, Michael did a killer bass solo...
yah turning on all your effects, making elephant noises and rolling around on the floor is a true sign of a master.
Quoted from Jackalwere:When I saw the F.U.C.K. show, Michael did a killer bass solo...
Lol no he didn’t
Quoted from CrazyLevi:Lol no he didn’t
I give credit for being the first person to ever say anyone did a "killer bass solo" though
for most of the planet that is the "cool I can go take a leak or get a beer" portion of the show (including the rest of the band).
If you were stoned out of your mind and/or had no idea of how to actually play bass, I could see how you might think this was fantastic.
Bass solos generally suck ...
But the worst solos I have ever seen are Mick Mars from Motley Crüe.
I’ve seen them 3 times, and holy shit his guitar solo sections are so bad ... just a huge unmusical racket.
Every time I’ve had to literally cover my earholes to ward off potential permanent ear damage!
Oooooooooffff. Just thinking about it makes my tinnitus go another pitch higher.
