    Quoted from solarvalue:

One minor complaint: No mention of the P3? Did you guys play it? I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts on some of the new games for the system especially the first Internet-connected head-to-head game. Hope that this was just an oversight and you will fill us in on the next episode.

I don't know if Tony did. I only played the pitch-and-bat game. Since I played Lexy and the Cannon game in 2016 and covered that in last year's TPF review, I decided not to replay them this time since they always had people on them. But, Tony and I did talk about the P3 system in its "final" form and I totally neglected to list it in our show outline (which was atypically assembled about 15 minutes before we recorded). So, a quasi-oversight.

We'll be able to hit on what we saw with P3 in our next episode. Thanks for bringing it up!

Here is the full bracket from the now concluded 2017 Modern Widebody Tournament. Twilight Zone (Bally 1993) ended up winning (big surprise).

    Episode 32: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-32

Since we didn't cover it in the Texas Pinball Festival recap episode, we give our thoughts on Multimorphic, Inc's P3. Then, I talk about my time on Stern Pinball's Batman 66. After that is the latest information out of Dutch Pinball regarding their discussions between their contract manufacturer and getting The Big Lebowski back into shipping. I then have an interview with Keri Wing, the 2nd place finisher of the IFPA's 2017 World Women's Pinball Championship. After that is a brief update on the legal front involving Skit-B and the Predator pinball fiasco. The final topic is the IFPA's announced 2018 plan to start collecting tournament fees for sanctioned events.

    Hi Dennis and Tony,

Thanks very much for talking about the P3 in your latest episode, it was great to hear your thoughts.

One thing I think you may have misunderstood. Heads Up, the head-to-head game, is the first online pinball game. The games are linked via wi-fi over the Internet. You guys were both saying that you would need to buy 2 games to play it but that is not the case. You can play the game over the Internet with anyone else who has a P3. They plan to have online matchmaking so that you can connect and challenge players online. This is very different to NBA Fastbreak which must be linked via a cable and can only be played as a linked game when the games are physically next to each other.

Anyways, thanks again for the show.

    #55 6 years ago

Yes, we did misunderstand. I will issue a correction and clarification next episode. Thanks!

    Episode 34: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-34

Bowen Kerins joins us as a guest host for this episode. As such, the entire episode is dedicated to pinball and mathematics.

After the intro (with a shout-out to NicoVolta and his Nic's North American Pinball Tour thread on this forum), we hit some pinball news items and then get into the more meaty discussions. We talk about ways local communities can grow their competitive pinball scenes, what makes for good/bad competition pins, what makes a unique pinball location, a round-up of thoughts on recently released (or soon to be) pins, and talk about the tutorials Bowen works on.

We have a math segment after all this (one of which is related to pinball, one to video games, one to game shows, and one to math itself [very meta]).

    #58 6 years ago

    Hi Dennis,

Are you guys on the Pinball Magazine mailing list? Jonathon Joosten puts out a monthly newsletter about everything that has been happening in the world of pinball manufacturing which may be useful for your news segment.

I wasn't. I've added my name, thanks for the tip!

Hey guys.. I just got around to listening to the TPF podcast. Great quality on you guys 'cast. Just wanted to say that the Farfalla at TPF was mine. That thing was a bitch all weekend! I had to fix a ball hang at the top of the plunger wireform saturday morning, and the left flipper kept getting stuck thanks to something gone foul in the flipper mech including at LEAST a broken return spring, which I replaced, but didn't completely fix the problem. It also busted a plastic. I haven't even unfolded it yet, have been so busy with other things. If you end up in D/FW for any other reason than TPF, give me a shout and you're more than welcome to come over and give it another shot.

If you got playing tips from a fatass with a beard, that was probably also me as well. Someone was trying to play dollar games on it, cracked me up. I wish it had been working more reliably...hadn't had ANY issues with it at home..of course!!

Oh yes, it was very cool to see. My first Zaccaria to play in fact. And you did give us a tip. Two in fact. I had no idea that those 2" flippers were for saving an outlane drain (and, for some ridiculous reason, I just assumed it was just an easy way to make a lane guide out of an existing part that the company did to save money), and you explained to us how it worked. Then after we finished I think you overheard us talking about the timed ball feature (which had surprised and confused us and I think we'd played half of each others turns because we'd not noticed) and you came over and explained how that worked. That's when I saw your Pinside badge and recognized your handle (and mentioned something about liking a number of your posts here).

So thanks for bringing it to the show, probably one of the few opportunities I'd ever have to play one! It's the only Zarccaria I knew by name (and I only knew it because for the podcast we did a 1980s Pinball Tournament based on Pinside seeding and in our "Other" manufacturer category Farfalla was the only Zarccaria to make it into the list of 16).

    #62 6 years ago

I'd never played a Zacc before I bought it? My wife pointed it out years ago for the art, and I really like having oddball games, but Farfalla's a perfect storm of all three things I like in games at home: Wierd, Art, Drop targets. I'm still annoyed that it didn't cooperate much during the show, moreso than it breaking a plastic. I was going to not bring it back next year.....now I kind of feel obligated to, assuming I don't have to sell it for cash between now and then. =P

    #63 6 years ago

Just got to get another weird game/obscure manufacturer, though I suppose they all run the same risks. I know I didn't see any pins from Playmatic or Atari at the 2017 show. Don't recall a Game Plan, either. Someone tried to talk me into bringing down my Superman, but it was such a pain to get through the door-frame I think it'll only leave my house if it is sold!

    #64 6 years ago

I'd still like to own an Airborne Avenger, and a Mars Trek, so I'm sure I'll eventually cover Atari and Sonic at some point! Superman seems like a fun game, but I've never played one that felt like it was playing well, so really hard to judge.

    #65 6 years ago

Yes, mine can make all the shots. Cool idea to spell Superman, makes you shoot across the whole field. But, if you've heard a number of the podcast episodes, you know I'm not a fan of widebodies, and this one's side-to-side action is extreme and I'm not fond of that. But it was a free game, and who rejects free? Not me!

    #66 6 years ago

I wouldn't either...but I love the super-widebodies. Future Spa is easily my favorite pre-90's solid state. If I can ever find and afford a restored one, it's got a permanent space waiting on it. On a side note, there's a working Airborne Avengers in Austin for 750...tempting.

    #67 6 years ago
    Quoted from Frax:

On a side note, there's a working Airborne Avengers in Austin for 750...tempting.

I don't blame you. S. Ritchie is my favorite designer, so even the widebodies always make me consider. And Opperman's art style for Atari is one of my favorites, so that doesn't hurt. Atari may have bungled a lot with their pinball division, but not the art.

The pinball segment consists of a legal news update regarding Skit-B, an update regarding the latest Dutch Pinball update, discussion of the Total Nuclear Annihilation translite, discussion of the encore remake of AC/DC by Stern, and an interview I have with gstellenberg regarding Multimorphic's P3 Pinball Platform.

    #69 6 years ago

    Episode 36: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-36

At the start of the pinball segment, I talk a bit about Flash Baseball (a variant on Space Gambler) and what I learned about how Portugal handled importing pinball machines in the 1970s. From there, it's all about the latest news. Tony and I discuss the investor group's takeover of Heighway Pinball, the decision by Dutch Pinball to reject Nivoge's offer of TBL machines in exchange for equity, and of course Stern Pinball's Star Wars pin finally getting announced.

    Episode 38: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-38

We have a really long pinball segment, all to just hit three topics. The first (and shortest) is the Stern Pro Circuit. After that is time for Dutch Pinball (we summarize and analyze their webinar and latest newsletter discussing new contract manufacturer efforts). The final segment is Skit-B (the failed Predator Pinball project). We dive deep here, summarizing the latest three legal hearings, summarizing a couple legal documents, describing some of the accusations leveled against the Trustee's Counsel, and bring up the latest news regarding flooding and its impact on some of the property contested in these matters.

    Episode 39: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-39

Three pinball topics in this episode.
    1) Brief Dutch Pinball update.
    2) Discussion of Dead Flip's Star Wars gameplay stream.
    3) Pinball Done Quick, a pinball speedrunning event to raise money for charity, and their announcement to refund donations from the latest event due to conflicts between their official sweepstakes rules and what was conveyed publicly (in terms of how the prize allocation would work).

    Episode 40: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-40

We have the following topics in the pinball segment:
    1) Ghosting clause in Stern's manuals
    2) Total Nuclear Annihilation (Spooky's formal announcement with full art/details reveal and pricing)
    3) My Sharkey's Shootout project
    4) The best modern-era billiards-themed pinball machine. You can vote here: http://www.pollandmatch.com/chooser?pollownerid=5773431236722688&pollid=5668600916475904
    5) More thoughts on Stern's Star Wars pin

    #79 6 years ago

Reminder that our pool-themed pinball ranking poll is ongoing and ya'll have about a week to weigh in. Don't worry about putting anything special in the name/email boxes (in other words, make something up if you want), the online tool just required those to be there. We definitely could use some more votes. Link:

Then we talk some Stern news (ghosting manual update, KISS code, and new Marketing Director). After that is gameplay of Star Wars Premium as featured on Dead Flip. Finally, driven by so much discussion (here and on other podcasts), we tackle the broad question: is pinball too expensive?

    Episode 42: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-42

Don (formerly of The Pinball Podcast) is back as a guest host for this episode. The pinball segment opens with an interview I did with Terry about his company Pinball Life (and a bit at the end regarding the ScoreGasm Master project he worked on). From there, we talk about Trudeau's arrest on child pornography charges (with a focus on hobby fallout since we're a hobby podcast). Finally, we revisit the "Is Pinball Too Expensive?" question, thanks to listener feedback, and focus in on two companies that might put pressure on the lower end of the NIB market pricing spectrum: Homepin and Multimorphic.

    #82 6 years ago

To tackle some queries about when we do interviews versus guest hosts:

For interviews we usually are addressing a request (e.g., a listener asks if we can cover a particular subject or someone with a product/service reaches out to us wanting to participate). Sometimes it'll be either Tony or me wanting to dive into something we don't know a lot about. As a general rule, we keep the interviews to a half-hour or less, usually just one of us conducts the interview (there have been exceptions of course), and we record them before we record and assemble the podcast and just drop them in.

Guest hosts usually come up when Tony and I can come up with someone who might enjoy just interacting and participating on the podcast (like Don in the latest episode). Since we're mixed gaming (mostly pinball followed by video games), we usually target people with interest in both areas, though we tend to craft the topics around the primary interests of the participant (so when Bowen was on we mostly talked pinball, but also game shows since that's an interest area). These require more work since we have to coordinate recording the entire podcast with everyone's schedules (but, at least for us, tends to be the more fun of the two approaches).

Anyway, we're always open to ideas/suggestions in both groupings from others (makes life easier actually).

We establish a new contest/tournament for people to vote on: best System 11 pin. As such, Tony and I run through the Round 1 match-ups and our thoughts on them. From there, we transition into a discussion of pinball licensing in the 1990s (which companies had the best licenses, if not the best licensed pins).

Schell has no N in it, Mr. Kriegel.

Great episode as always. Will Pinbot win the System 11 round-up because it already won the overall? Or will it get bracketed-out by another System 11 challenger? Will be fun to see.

BTW, I shall never again question your affinity for the Freedom prototype. Considering doing a conversion from a traditional one as a future project. And would love to join you guys for a EM rap session sometime. Will return before long - gotta stock up on some Christopher Elbow chocolate (Kansas City based). Darn good.

    Quoted from NicoVolta:

Schell has no N in it, Mr. Kriegel.

That's what I get for making a typo in my notes (it has an N in *my* version, I checked!). Back to 50% success with last names. Apologies! I might even remember to issue a correction, but I should probably confirm pronunciation (Shell?).

Incidentally, the proper way to mispronounce mine is CRY-sell. That's the most common way.

    Quoted from NicoVolta:

I think it's in trouble. Last time I kept the assignments to 1980-89, and so a few System 11s from the latter era were not in the mix. But, I will continue to hope.

Darn straight! Those Slam Tilt guys might hate any creativity in flipper design, but Tony and I are willing to allow pinball to explore all sorts of variants. A true master of the game would learn to adapt to differing flipper geometries instead of relying on memorizing only one pattern. How can we celebrate something like the Bally Class of '81 for its unique experiments whist spitting on the past ones? We can't I say, we can't! Unless of course it didn't work, but it did, so we celebrate (when it failed we mock and ridicule of course, this is pinball after all).

I bought Elbow chocolates once for a Mother's Day gift, they are pricey but Mom didn't disown me so I guess that's a good review. Total non-stock-up non-pinball related, he also has an ice cream shop. Glacé Artisan Ice Cream (http://www.glaceicecream.com/). Did it for a party I hosted one time, again, everyone loved it, but I'm too cheap to make that a regular thing.

    Quoted from FalconPunch:

You can, just guess and make things up. It's what I do! Or, actually, it's configured so you can leave choices blank on questions you don't know. System 11 is an interesting set of games. I'd summarize them as having a popularity spike over the last 2-3 years in the U.S. because they can be had for cheap (now I suppose relatively cheap) prices and offered:
    1) Ramps (some people don't care for single-level);
    2) More complex rules than the early 80s;
    3) Fun sound packages.

And, very few are total dogs. Bugs Bunny is, though. Well, he's a rabbit, but he's also a dog when he's a pinball machine. Seriously, if you ever see one, try it just to see how awful it is.

    Episode 44: https://soundcloud.com/user-465086826/episode-44

In the pinball segment, we open with some quick news hits (whether or not Heighway is shipping Alien pins, some summation on the recent Skit-B legal happenings, and the art revealed regarding Spooky's Alice Cooper pin). From there, we go more in-depth, starting with JPop and deeproot Pinball, LLC. After that is a discussion of the Homepin interview on Head2Head pinball, with a focus on the discussion (on this forum) of the decision to not allow end-user direct updating of code on Thunderbirds. Finally, we launch Round 2 of our 2017 System 11 Tournament.

As an aside, at the end of the video game segment I do briefly discuss Zaccaria Pinball (a virtual recreation of Zaccaria tables; the game has been out a while but I finally bought the table pack for it), so that might be of interest to some.

    Another great ep

    #89 6 years ago

Glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps Round 2 of the System 11 Tournament has games you're more familiar with than Round 1 (as a lot of the crappy ones have fallen away now)!

    #90 6 years ago

This time, I'm voting the whole bracket through. Nice to get in on the starting vote!

Thanks for the correction... my name is indeed pronounced shell like sea shell. *shrug* ah, those Germans. Actually it turns out I don't have that ancestry after a semi-recent discovery. (!)

Look at my collection (is current here on Pinside) and let me know which game I should bring with me for the next visit. Not all are ready though. Spanish Eyes is headed for the clear coat booth, so it won't be available in time.

    BTW, it's Zacca-RHEE-uh, not Za-CAR-ee-uh.

(regrettably, yes, it officially rhymes with diarrhea)

    #91 6 years ago

That's cool, I originally had been saying Zaccaria the poo-poo way, so that'll be easy to revert on.

I know we have a Spanish Eyes owned by someone in the area, at least one. Just haven't had a chance to play it.

As for a game I would recommend bringing... well let us see here. First, throw out all the Gottlieb games (they get so much love already no one needs to see them). Now, toss out all the single player games (it's more fun to compete). Then, get rid of Old Chicago because everyone's already played that.

    I'm basically down to two:
    1) Bow and Arrow (Bally 1975): 7.4 on IPDB. 4 player. Couple spinners and kickout holes. Looks to have potential.
    2) Skyrocket (Bally 1971): 7.9 on IPDB. 2 player. Couple kickout holes and an up-post.

Skyrocket's layout looks more interesting to me, but Bow and Arrow might be viewed as having more to shoot for/do. I've not played either of them, so that's all speculation.

Kudos for mustering the resolve to let go of your first pin. Rule number one: Only keep the ones you play. Don't worry about nostalgia or rarity or whatever. What you instinctively gravitate towards is the only benchmark you need.

One final pronunciation dilemma... is it ZACK (like "attack") or ZACH (like "Bach") A-REE-UH? I'm thinkin' ZACK.

Now off to give Cuphead a go. Looks fan-freaking-tastic!

I'd think so too, again, stealing from Spanish pronunciations (which is going to get me in trouble, I mean they aren't the SAME language, only related).

I need to clean some switches on Skylab, still isn't always wanting to reset all the score reels from game over (does fine if done during play). Now that it is in the garage it'll be easier for me to work on, but of course I've got parts coming for Silver Slugger and I'll prioritize that one.

Loved the podcast. I play my pinball a 1/4 ramp at a time. Made me laugh out loud.

Mustang would have sold so much better if themed as Fast & Furious. Gotta put in Drag-The-Bank-Safe-Through-The-Streets Multiball, though. Might need to use a small font to list that one.

In pinball we open with setting up our final round of the 2017 System 11 tournament. From there, we touch on a minor Heighway Pinball update (regarding the Alien pin) and give some preliminary thoughts on Stern's announced Guardians of the Galaxy pinball machine. Finally, I have a lengthy piece of the Gottlieb "street level" pins of 1990-1 (what the goal was, what went wrong/right with it, and how that related to Gottlieb's ultimate failure).

Just finished listening to it now. Started listening a while ago but forgot to finish it off.
Great info on gottlieb. The most interesting part of it for me that I didn't know was how they tried to get into the pokies like Williams but failed.

Yeah, that was new info to me too. I just figured they couldn't make money on pinball anymore. I guess once you have all the equipment paid for scaling back isn't as big of a deal, but I've never worked in manufacturing so what do I know?

Did up an article that Pinball News ran yesterday on the subject. Figured something written and searchable would be more useful (versus what I had to do going to a lot of sources, including audio sources, which is pretty time-consuming). Threw in some visual data as well, namely what games were getting produced by the big manufacturers during that window of time. More concise than my rambling.
