What do you mean you want to install a capacitor? rather than a battery?

I usually go down to Wal-Mart and buy a cordless phone battery pack and install it rather than the on-board NI-CAD battery that will eventually go bad. Mount it down at the bottom of the head (not on the board).

As long as it's a big enough cap (high enough MicroFarads) it will work. But, it won't hold the memory as long as the batteries will. As long as you don't care about losing the memory over long periods of downtime, it should work fine. There are Super-Caps available that will work best if you find that a standard capacitor doesn't hold the charge long enough.
