Quoted from IdahoRealtor:Come on, buddy. There's no need to connect an anti illegal immigration stance to internment camps. Despite the inane rhetoric being spewed out these days, anti illegal immigration does not equate to racism and persecution. I am deeply saddened that half our country (and pretty much my entire home state) buys into such nonsense.
I will admit that my comment was made in anger, was a bit superfluous, and a bit out of hand. However it was a reaction to repeated comments of CLOSE ALL BORDERS!!! which I found distasteful. We know nothing of the man that has been caught robbing this pinball machine, for all we know he could be here legally. Close all borders in reaction to him being a different color than white in my eyes does have a tone of prejudice, that is to prejudge based on ones skin color, and automatically assumes that he is an illegal immigrant and a burden to this country without knowing the full story, so in my mind in this instance the statement was based on prejudice.
I agree that there need to be regulations in place to ensure that people living and working in America are doing so legally and paying their fair share of taxes and etc. I am not against regulations in any way whatsoever, and don't believe that putting such things in place equates to racism. Unfortunately, some people (not all) are not as level headed as you and think that simply closing the borders would solve all of our problems or they base their thinking on preconceived notions, fear and perhaps hatred passed down from others or learned over time.
This country was founded on immigration and giving people less fortunate in other parts of the world an opportunity for a fresh start. I am willing to bet that every last one of this in the thread descends from people that have immigrated to this great nation, and I think we should afford that opportunity to others as long as they do it legally and in a way that benefits us all. Does not it say on the statue of liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
Anyway, I will get off my soapbox. I have met you personally Norcalrealtor and you are a great guy. I am sure if we sat down and really discussed the way the world is and how we feel about it there would be a lot of things we agree upon, and plenty that we disagree about, but that's ok. No one will ever agree with someone else on 100% of everything. Differences of opinion are great and lead to great thinking and new ways of doing things. Its only when the discussion becomes uncivil and blanket statements are issued that we lose sight of things.
So I apologize to Teekee for equating that he would be fine with interments camps, that was out of line.
