Have been on the list for probably 2 years. Nothing yet.

We just purchased an ES this past weekend. The ball seems to go air bound a lot and gets stuck in various places. Is this normal or has this machine been modified in some way? We are pinball newbies so don't know a lot about the mechanics of any machine.

Probably worn. Airballs can be caused by targets that lean back instead of stand straight up, ramp entrances that are not smooth, playfield inserts that are no longer flush with the surface of the wood.

What particular shot or portion of your playfield gives you airballs?

Epic first post. Maybe post some detailed pics of what the ball bounces off of when it goes airborn

#555 6 years ago

It seems to be happening the most when ball is moving toward the center ramp or around it. It has also jumped over the green sign to the entrance of the ramp. We just got the machine and I just wondered if this is normal occurrence of the ball action. The ball has even ended up back in the shooting lane. We appreciate any feedback, being we know absolutely nothing about the pin. We played it at an expo a couple of weekends ago and really liked it.

First thing I would check is that the standup targets all have foam backing behind them. The foam keeps the target from bending too far back when it's hit by the ball. If the foam is missing, the target bends back at an angle and the inertia of the ball will roll it up the target and into the air.

One other possibility is that a former owner may have replaced your flipper coils with ones that are more powerful than factory spec. That could bang the ball around quite a bit.

BTW I see a chipped corner above the "9" window on your Earthquake Institute....that must have been a hell of an airball!

#557 6 years ago

Thank you so much for your advice. We will definitely check that out. Yes, the ball has been flying around a lot!

Check the metal flap at the entrances to the ramp. Looks like yours has wood screws in the right side and something odd in the center one. Those flaps should be nearly flat, providing a smooth transition from the playfield to the angle of the ramp. If they are too tight they are nearly flat on the playfield and curve upwards onto the ramp, imparting an upward force on the ball.

Yes, that's what I suspected just from how much damage has been done to the plastics, but I checked them out and they appear to be the correct coils FL-11630.

#560 6 years ago

Also check to make sure you have the correct flipper coils. Sounds like you could have too strong flippers. Im not home so I cant photo my coils for reference color or part #.

#561 6 years ago

Brought this home a few weeks ago and have spent that time completely tearing it down, polishing, all new plastics and all new ramps. Brand new pop bumpers, all LED. Finally finished today, just have to put the apron on! And remove the inclinometer from the playfield

Does anyone know what the part/reference # for the wire ball guide is that sits directly under the ball drop on the right side lane nearest the sling plastic? My game is missing this part, but if you look closely in the picture I posted above you can see the two holes directly under the wire form where it used to be. I have researched and found a lot of other playfields that are missing this as well, but some that still have it. I can't tell if it is some kind of support for the wire form or something else... I also cannot seem to find it through the conventional sites, and I wasn't able to identify it in the Williams blue parts catalog. Anyone have an idea? Thx!

It's just a support for the wireform. Both of my playfields have it. Looks like a wire that goes in each hole, bent flat on top for the wireform to sit on it.

Edit: Looking in the manual on page 74 of the .pdf it may be number 49? (print is kind of blurry) part number12-6466-6 Wireform 1-1/2"

I thought so too at first, but the blue book identifies that earthshaker has 2 of that part and, given the size they show, leads me to believe it is pointing at the longer ball guides. I appreciate you looking into it nonetheless...the mystery continues!

Here's a couple of pix of that wire guide with & without the habitrail installed, hope this helps.

This is a useless piece, its to keep the ball from bouncing right into the other lanes when it blasts out of the VUK and hits the PF. It was an afterthought addition, and I feel a visually unpleasant one. If you pull up on the lane guide a bit, it will raise up and still remain stable, and the closed gap makes it impossible for the ball to fit though.
I removed it from my game and I have never had the ball bounce over, I have seen it removed from most of the games I have seen pictured around here as well.

Great information, thank you! I felt the same way, it isn't really affecting ball play nor have I ever had it drop into the other lanes.

Thanks for the pictures, this at least helps me to get a better estimate of the size. Maybe I'll just keep it off and not worry about it.

Appreciate all the great info everyone, thanks again.

I attempted to reverse engineer the sinking building mod and 3D print a working unit.
I've since sold my game and other projects have taken my interest.

Here's the original installation guide and website, my notes, and the first round of 3D models I drew but never printed.
Hope somebody can get this going and publish the plans!

It's pretty rudimentary with the way the cam and switches work.
Someone that's familiar with servos and Arduino could easily make one that could do cool effects/shaking/etc.

Picked up EarthShaker last night and excited to put some hours in playing it. This will be my second pinball machine (first was Space Station). Excited to play and figure this game out!

Great pickup! I'm sure you'll want to experiment and explore some settings and gameplay features on your own time, but one thing I do recommend is changing the shaker motor speed to "street." In street setting, the shaker varies depending on shots you make. So it'll be a low rumble when not much is going on, and when you make a ramp shot or something, it'll speed up with great vigor. Kinda cool.

Enjoy!

I have an Earthshaker!, my only pin right now. I really love it. The main issue I have is that the actuator that goes through the playfield and opens and closes the state fault line is very worn. A lot of the time it doesn't open far enough and the ball goes to the left instead of being locked. It is part #6 on the attached image, part # A-12431. Anyone know where I can get one? I've looked everywhere and no one seems to make a new one and there are no NOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not surprised to see this being re-run now that the ES playfields are nearing completion.

#587 6 years ago

Well, last night, I noticed my shaker motor was not very powerful. I have not looked into what it could be but I am hoping it is something simple and wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions what it could be before i start looking into seeing if I need a new motor.

Just putting the finishing touches on my restoration. Very happy with the results.

I actually found the colour by accident. I was getting some primer filler for it when I saw this spray can and though it looks incredibly close to the decals.
Decided to buy a can and see. It is almost a perfect match.

Question for the group. My shaker motor stopped working the other day and i did some testing on it. When i go through the test, i can get it to work fine and it is very powerful, but during game play, it does not work. When the "zones" are completed and the ball is locked, the machine tries to shake but doesnt.

I checked the board and it is good and wanted to see if any of you all would have some suggestions. Again, the motor works fine during testing, and i can manually switch it on and it works, but it wont work during game play.

When it locks, it "kind of shakes" but doesnt. It is a short rumble with barely any vibration. So i can tell it is being triggered and registering the ball lock, but it will barely shake for 2 or 3 seconds and stop

#599 6 years ago

Did you change, fix, or replace anything recently?
What do you have adjustment setting no. 41 "Quake Intensity" set to?

"It's Sunny Drive Time!"

#600 6 years ago

Have not changed, fixed, or replaced anything yet. Quake intensity is set to street but have switched it to arcade and back to street to see if that would do anything.
