The Dune story was thought so complex that when I saw the Lynch film in theaters they felt it necessary to hand out a cheat sheet with a detailed glossary and dramatis personae. Sadly Lynch’s film was fatally flawed, as I believe any film attempt of this epic is destined to be. Herbert’s masterwork is too cerebral, too nuanced to ever be fully captured in a motion picture. While it may be possible to make a good Dune film, it will always fall very short of the original source material.
