    Quoted from DumbAss:

I listen to all suggestions. More experience looking at issues is better than my own (limited) experience. I still have a few of these boards left but when I get closer to re-ordering them I will open up the layout and consult you on getting what you want in to the board. I am unsure of when this will be though as it depends purely on demand. On a related note I received a suggestion from ChrisH so I will be looking into that and see if it has some effect on this board.
For others using the Rottendog MPU9211 ... I am unlikely to support its physical layout. The placement of the MOSFETs makes it almost impossible to support it.

You do fantastic work and your boards are awesome. Just a small optimization that I think will help make it better. Glad to help if I can.

are you populating the components on bare boards from victor?
here's the first of (hopefully) all of victor's board designs to make the building experience a bit more friendly.

plan is to provide links to my dropbox of .rar files for the boards (the first one being the wpc fliptronics board)
    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jfrzmy2mvucoz8s7qh3od/w89_fliptronics_II_board_rev2.zip?rlkey=5p3y3kf97223zaw5n2qvxgixy&dl=0
    fliptronics board v2 (resized).pngfliptronics board v2 (resized).png

each .zip file contains a number of .png files, one of each component [by value], which are subdivided into folders by component type (capacitor, diode, resistor, transistor, etc...)
and each individual .png file shows the highlighted location(s) of the component in question

I've done this for the original williams mpu board here (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/twobits-wpc-mpu-complete-assembly#post-3589424) as well as a number of reproduction boards on KLoV, and all were well received

j_m_ I love the diagram you've made for the FlipTronics II board.

What would you think about making all of the part label text white?
I conjecture that the text would be more readable.
I mean like "74HCT374" in white. "103", "1N4004", all in white, etc.

BTW...I really like the way the FlipTronics II board was labeled much much better than the way the MPU was labeled in the linked thread. It allows much faster ID of components.

    Best regards.

    Quoted from PinFixin:

    Please enjoy your time off!

I have a few messages piled up. I was traveling across time zones recently and had things to tend to prior to travel. I was unable to finish my plan to order stuff before travel so it would be ready on return. Consequently I am now playing catchup on those things. I prioritize these because once ordered I can use the time in shipping to do other things. If I start building boards I will still have to spend time waiting for shipping on these other tasks I wanted done prior to departure. Asynchronous I/O (if you will) is a much more efficient use of time.

    Quoted from ChrisHibler:

May I post this one to the PInWiki with attribution?

Note that this annotation is for my reproduction boards - NOT OEM boards. They are typically very close to OEM but there are some subtle (and no so subtle) differences. For this board the bridge rectifier at the bottom right has been replaced with discrete diodes at the top of the board and the TIP36C transistors are vertical rather than horizontal on a metal heat sink. I will be providing j_m_ with more raw images for annotation in the coming weeks. I have to play catch up for a bit.

And with that ... those of you waiting for a reply it will be coming soon. My diurnal rhythm is adjusting. For me it is typically much slower in the westward direction of travel.

j_m_ I feel like I'm missing out on a capability provided by your diagrams.

I don't think I know how to use them.

I have always wished for a way to say (for instance) "show me where U7" is, and have U7 highlighted on a diagram.
Does your diagram type provide that kind of thing?

If you download the complete zip file from drop box, there are sub folders that contain all of the parts needed for the board. Go into the IC's folder and there is a separate picture showing U1-U6.

j_m_ - you have done a great job with these drawings.

While building boards (pushing them through the pipeline), I often forget to take some images of the process. Typically just want to work through them. I happen to have these three working through the pipeline that I hope to have finished by the end of the week. I want to get these into a pack batch that includes a bunch of bare and small boards that are also waiting for verification and packing.

    I build boards in phases.

    1. Lowest profile components. These are resistors, capacitors and diodes, soldered component side to make soldering go faster.
    2. Intermediate profile components. These are IC sockets, soldered solder side so this phase is typically slower.
    3. Other intermediate profile components. These are LEDs, jumpers, TO-92s and others, also soldered solder side.
    4. Higher profile components. These are headers, TO-220s and TO-247s, also soldered solder side.
    5. Highest profile components. These are radial snap-in capacitors and heat sinks, also soldered solder side.

I often combine phase 2 and 3 as well as 4 and 5 together. I wash the board between these phases to keep it clean. This is why it often takes about a week to build a board of this size. Remember that this amount of time isn't just the building, it's also the preparation (counting, bending leads and inserting components).

    boards_256.jpgboards_256.jpg

This image shows boards in these different phases. Phase 1 complete. Phase 3 complete. Phase 5 complete (complete and ready for IC population).

Any chances we will be able to purchase other colour boards?

KiCad has something like this as a plugin:
    https://github.com/openscopeproject/InteractiveHtmlBom

Not sure if KiCad is being used for layout here.

Most EDA packages can also export searchable PDFs.

PCB creation software has this feature and is very handy. You can type in a part designation and they highlight on both board and schematic. That or on a big board I will do a 'move R1' command because then it picks up and you can follow the PCB tracks, air wires, or schematic lines back to where the part was sitting at, easier than finding the highlighted item out of hundreds. You can also highlight entire traces and the legs of parts attached to that trace. Doing diag when you have access to that is a bit easier than following lines on a paper schematic. WMS schematics from the system 3-7 era are a nightmare for me. Trying to follow a MPU schematic trace, blink once and you lose it. I still have a lot of respect for the people that came up with this stuff in the 70s still even if I curse at the schematics from time to time.

I sometimes watch repair videos from Louis Rossman on youtube and he has a lot of apple schematics in a PCB schematic / board layout viewer software that has these types of linking features. I am not sure how you would generate a file to be compatible with the schematic/layout viewer software like that. Might be a KiCad plugin to export those viewer files from a project without giving out entire access to your design files.

This will be honest and, unfortunately, probably not what you want to hear. I still have quite a few of the current revision Data East CPU boards (in red). This board is not a very popular board. I assume most people either don't need it or when they do need one they opt for the readily available and discoverable alternative. I see posts with people recently replacing their boards with an alternative.

The issue with different colors is that a different color counts as an different order from the fabrication factory. It is subject to the same MOQ (minimum order quantity) and multiples. I have a few examples of boards I have made that are sitting and haven't moved. A good example is, in fact, the Data East CPU board. I thought that the System 9 CPU board would move less than the Data East CPU board but I am wrong. Another example is the Banzai Run Interconnect board. I had 10 of these made in August 2020 and I still have about 5 of them left. However, this is expected as the board is only used in one game.

I would only ever consider a different color for a board that I expect to move otherwise I would be sitting on boards that just pile up in the corner of a box. The ones that would be considered are primarily the System 11 CPU board and the WPC-89 Power Driver board. This is just reality. Pinball boards are a niche market with no (high) volume demand.

    And for entertainment ...

I sent a package USPS Priority Mail Express International back in July. I watched it carefully to see its progress. It got stuck in LAX having claimed to have departed the airport a few times only to depart it again in subsequent days. Finally, it actually departed and made the trip across the Pacific Ocean.

Then it got stuck at the airport. Apparently stuck after having departed SYD. The package apparently got lost in the physical ether of the mail system. For a few weeks before I decided to take care of the recipient. Luckily, for me and him, I was headed to visit family so I packed up a new package and transported it across the Pacific Ocean.

I waited for a few weeks to see if the package would start moving again. Alas, it didn't. So I sent the replacement package (domestically) and that package arrived. Recipient is (hopefully and presumably) happy. I have since made the return trek back across the Pacific Ocean.

I had given up hope and wrote off the package as lost. But for grins and giggles I occasionally look at the tracking to see what's up with it. Lo and behold ... this morning I saw it started moving again. After two months of presumably sitting in a corner somewhere without much love. Looks like it's going to get delivered.

    postal_service_express_service.jpgpostal_service_express_service.jpg

Wow. This is PRIORITY EXPRESS service. Gotta love the postal service (no matter what the country is). Hey ... at least they found the package and will actually deliver it.

Watching USPS tracking is entertainment. Every try and file a missing ticket?

    Quoted from Methos:

I quit using the USPS. They had the ability to charge me double after I had mailed the package. And their tracking is horrible.

I sent off a package to a customer in Australia. It somehow managed to spend a month in Chicago and then found it way to continue and made it there eventually. Crazy.

    #984 1 year ago

International shipping with USPS is a shit show. I have had first class international land to australia in 10 days pre-covid. I have had priority express (3x more expensive) land in australia in 75 days.

Right now I don't think it matters first class, priority, or express for international. It gets there when it gets there and it does not seem like the higher priced services are any faster. Trying to use DHL or fedex is a nightmare I just refuse to deal with. USPS slow boat and you just have to wait and hope for the best. Not giving refunds on express shipping because it took 3 months or whatever.

Had a package take three months to delivery to Europe. At the two month point a paypal dispute comes in (don't do that pls). While taking the time for the dispute to clear up the package lands and the customer was happy and wrote that in the dispute text. I still lost the dispute some how... I don't think a human ever reviewed it. Thankfully customer was cool about it and sent the money back over.

ha! weird. Not sure why I did not find that when searching for parts, even after typing the part number.
I ended up ordering a full rebuild kit, except for the heating element from another store in NJ, will have to go pick it up, just 40 min drive for me to the border.
Nowhere to be found in Canada!

    Thanks for the help Victor.

Once I finish rebuilding other parts of my LW3, I will be ordering a DE board. Cheers!

since we're sharing usps international horror stories, I sent a parcel to a friend in england last year right before thanksgiving. the tracking was never updated beyond the "received parcel" line from the originating post office. I ended up filing a claim and running a trace. usps paid off on the claim for 25% of the value (gee, thanks) and I figured that I was going to have to source the items again for my friend (on my dime).

low and behold, 9 months later he receives a message from his post office that a parcel addressed to him was found and was being redirected to his post office (from thailand). apparently, his package was thrown into the wrong container by the usps over here in the states and found its way in the wrong country for a good period of time. fortunately, it worked out in the end, but this was only one story in many that has had a happy ending with our postal system.

in other news, I'm currently working on the color charts for the following boards: system 11 cpu, wpc 89 power driver, and wpc 89 mpu
my goal is to try and get all 3 complete before I leave for the chicago expo show next week. fingers crossed

Victor donated two custom purple PCBs to Project Pinball for our charity auction at Pinball Expo. It is not possible to purchase a purple boards from him, they are only produced and released in special circumstances such as this. I spoke with him and want to let everyone know we'll have online bidding this year for items. I will continue to update the thread here with details:

    Quoted from jellikit:

Victor donated two custom purple PCBs to Project Pinball for our charity auction

    Well done.
Those boards look the ducks nuts too.

I am very interested in these boards. I hope I do not have too much competition. LOL.

During my time off, I spent some of it working on schematic capture and layout of some boards. The range of boards varied from medium/large boards to some small boards. These are some of the smaller boards. The bigger ones I have set aside to build shortly. I still have a long line of boards to build for the month of November and some still remain to be built in October. I am trying to stay ahead of the build curve but also want to get some of the mysterious bigger boards built. I generally don't like to announce or post things until they are ready. That's vaporware. Posting sometimes does give me an idea of popularity. I know the unified System 3-7 CPU/Driver is still an item that there is demand for. I haven't forgotten about it. It's a question of priority. My priorities are:

    1. Build complete board orders. I can't do this continuously. I'll go insane so I use the next priority items to space it out.
    2. Build unbuilt boards to ascertain their functional status. Having an idea of whether the board works or not allows me to know if the board needs more investigation and starts a low priority thought thread about where the possible failures could be.
    3. Investigate boards with problems to figure out what's wrong and what is required to fix it.
    4. Schematic capture and layout of the next boards that may be useful. Sometimes this priority item even though it is #4 sits above priority #3. This happens when I am unable to do the investigation (such as when I take time off away from where my work bench is). Doing this item, however, generates more items for priority #2 which pushes #3 even lower.

I also want to let people know that I make mistakes and don't always get things right the first time. Often, only the finished product is ever seen and all the failures just get discarded. I think it's good to see the iterative nature of the process to hopefully give readers a sense of the amount of (time and) effort that goes into making a reproduction (or re-design) board.

These are the smaller ancillary boards in this most recent fabrication order.

    It includes:

    • Bally 6-digit and 7-digit displays.

I had these made for a very good local friend. As you can see the 6-digit display is completely messed up. Sometimes, I get carried away with trying to declare a board "finished" that I don't go through a thorough check list. This often happens to me when I push myself to finish something sooner than when it is ready. I guess it's more excitement and I am guilty of not following my own advice to "slow down and take the chill pill". I will still build the 7-digit version of the board and check it for electrical correctness. If my friend wants the 6-digit working sooner this means I will need to place another fabrication order before my next planned time off which I was not planning to do. The actual display uses the alphanumeric block as it's the block I have available but I am thinking of switching it to a numeric block. I don't expect much (if any) demand for this board. I did for my friend so I may just keep it as alphanumeric for ease.

    • Proximity Verification board. This is to test the eddy sensor boards.
    • Motor EMI (and brake) board. A small board. Easy to have reproduced.
    • WPC Opto Transmitter and Receiver boards. Small boards. Easy to reproduce.

I don't really plan to sell these as there are boards from MANY other manufacturers available. My true motivation for this is to provide the bare boards for people that want to build their own transmitter and receiver boards. The reason is that there seems to be manufacturers who are providing boards to merchants where the receiver (phototransistor) is incorrectly installed on the board causing mayhem (and leading to forum help request threads). When you purchase one of these boards from a merchant, you don't know which phototransistor component is being used by the manufacturer. When you build you own board, you know exactly which phototransistor component is being used because you purchased it and installed it. Not all phototransistors are the same and the lead orientation varies between manufacturers.

The bigger boards to follow once I have them built. Possibly this coming week. I've been building October boards for 2 weeks straight (without break) and I need to stop for a few days to prevent going insane.
