I got probably a very dumb question.

I am not familiar with the imperial system and I am looking for machine screws but getting confused Example:

    Is 1 3/4” the same as 1-3/4”?

The dash symbol gets me confused, because when I google the conversion chart to mm, then the screw is 1 minus 3/4 inch.

Yes it would be “&” I suppose. If you see any X’s that’s probably for threads not sure if it’s the same over there as it is here

    Quoted from Vin-bot:

Yes, the dash is just there to make the measurement easier to read.

When spoken aloud, the measurement would be one and three quarters.

So EJS is right that you can think of the dash as an "and" between the two sets of numbers.

    Quoted from Vin-bot:

because when I google the conversion chart to mm, then the screw is 1 minus 3/4 inch.

Yes, typically when you type numbers into a Google search, it (incorrectly) interprets it as a subtraction math symbol. The same issue comes up when you enter parts numbers with dashes in them.

If you want to use Google to help convert measurements, you may have to express the fractional measurement as a decimal.

    3/4 = 0.75

    So, 1-3/4 = 1.75

Then in Google, type something like: 1.75" to mm

Note that if you are trying to use metric hardware in a game built on imperial measurements, it won't work.

While you might be able to find a close match, it won't be exact, and things won't mate up properly.
