I like the idea of using the stars and blue stripes as border. You don't have to use the actual flag to have a similar feel.

Just like when there is a comment somewhere that says, "what's the problem with the flag?" I show it to my kids and say, 'be glad there are dumb people, because without 'dumb' in the dictionary there wouldn't be 'smart'. And my kids are smart, and lucky to be so.
You are a good parent. Most people want to avoid tough conversations.
