I have been wanting to do a custom pinball for so long and was torn between a Surfing pinball and a Dukes of Hazzard (DoH) pinball for a few years now, but today it's Australia Day here and decided to commit to a cool theme custom pinball.

To me it is one of those games that I always wondered why it was never done but lends itself to be a very cool and fun game. As like my other mod projects I like to include people in the process, get ideas, thoughts, rules etc to make this a cool game. Wolfmarsh and his Spaceballs : Pin has inspired me to give it a go.

I have doodled a rough layout for the game as well as some rough rules but want to do some hopefully new and interesting stuff with the game, with some inspiration coming from the these threads:
    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/lets-figure-out-the-bare-minimum-costparts-to-build-a-whitewood

as well as Aurich's simple pin thread.(edit - link added)
    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/maybe-its-time-to-build-a-simpler-pin

I grew up watching the Dukes all the time and enjoyed the movie as well (yes not the original actors) as all fun.

I have the CAD and 3D modelling experience and do alot of 3D printing and dabble in art (already have a few illustrator files ready for this game) but my challenge will be programming and has been my biggest form of procrastination for a few years. But from what I read Mission Pinball Framework looks like a great tool for programming (unless I can find a team mate to help me and we build 2 pinballs ) and really keen to learn more about the Fast board set as well.

I won't get this finished in a year as will be a few year project amongst mods and life but have much of the cabinet designed in cad, and doing playfield mech models amongst mods now.

    Thinking the game will have:
    - the duke farm / barn
    - cooters garage
    - boars nest and boss hoggs office
    - 2 ramps (one being a jump ramp)

    Game rules to include
    - gather the crew cars, cooter, general lee and diasy's car
    - delivering moon shine (with multiball police chases)
    - save the farm
    - car race (with multiball)
    - as well as bar fight

I do have an idea to have coloured balls to identify police and the general lee but unknown if I go down this path.

So putting it out there and open for ideas, rules, tips and please urge me if I start to slacken off with progress reports.

    Yeeeeeeehawwwww!

Sounds cool, can't wait to see where this goes.

I've been working on a Dukes of Hazzard re-theme for a few years and Im exactly where you are..LOL was waiting for a donor High speed to modify out etc. but I do have ideas for rules and modes etc. Maybe we can collaborate some thoughts and ideas on this. One thing I was going to work on was getting this 12v dixie horn installed in the cabinet... its a must

For some reason everytime I play Trom I see the Dukes, jumping a bridge, breaking out of jail (disc), and starting the game with skill by stopping at the Boars nest.

Good Luck, one of my favorite shows. An easy mode method might just be top ten epsoide list or check out the PS1 game.

    #6 8 years ago

yes I had the same thought with the dixie air horn, great to scare the crap out of people for a laugh.

mine is going to be all custom, was looking at doing a re-theme but decided against it.

    #8 8 years ago

    that's the one, cheers

the one thing I am doing differently is doing a licensed theme, surfing one next

    #9 8 years ago

well it's going to have to a lot of jumps and corkscrew jumps. and daisy dukes....lots of daisy duke shorts.

    #11 8 years ago

Awesome theme! A loud dixie horn is mandatory along with the Waylon Jennings theme song. A jump ramp sounds like a cool feature to start with. One other idea is a jail break which could serve as ball locks.

    #12 8 years ago

I love the idea! Check out this thread for some more input.

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/how-bout-a-dukes-of-hazard-pin

I agree with the jump ramp and mode ideas. I always pictured a Dukes pin replicating the flow and speed of No Fear and Getaway, since they share fast cars, jumps, hot women and police chases.

Some IM-esque magnet action would work too, kind of like being spotted by Roscoe, then evading him. Perhaps do a take on the jump shot of NF to simulate a long cliff jump? Maybe you can implement the wall magnet of Stern KISS to simulate the slow-mo jumps in succession regular non-magnetized jump loops.

A bow and arrow were also used on the show, when shooting out an enemy's tires. Don't know if a cannon/arrow launcher would work, or ruin the flow....

    Lots of ideas...

    #13 8 years ago

yes definitely one jump ramp and if you don't make the jump you are diverted to another ramp, like the jail break idea and could link it with boss hoggs safe in the office, but definitely boards nest with pop bumper tables.

was thinking a cooter hoist car ball lock

    - 3 flippers
    - 1-2 single drops as road blocks or barricades to knock down
    - was also thinking a animated backglass of general lee doing a jump, spell "Dukes" to launch off the bridge, spell "of" to get mid way of the jump and "Hazzard" to complete the jump - possibly spell "LEE" in the top lanes once to spell a letter and slowly complete the game name to collect a mega bonus.
    - other rules can be stacked and others slowly collect through a game

have an idea of a 3rd sling shot in the back of the playfield to that can be used with the flipper to kick the ball down a very hard lane to get to to simulate hiding in the bushes from Roscoe

as for magnets, they are fun but not a huge fan so probably won't use them but want it to have flow and fast

daisy will be on their, as loved her back in the day, sexy legs and shorts but did think jessica was hot in the remake movie. Still remember back in the 80's reading that daisy had her legs insured for $1 million dollars in case of any accidents.

wanted to have characters on plastics and playfield be more road and trail markings etc, with buildings & characters etc on plastics. I didn't want to go photoshop so leaning to using cartoon style art for the well knowns like the boss hogg, bo, luke and daisy (she looks sexy here still). Something along these lines.

Note: not my art but what I was thinking of doing.

Maybe make a mode where if you do really badly, the "scab" Duke boys show up for a season.

    #18 8 years ago

A mate gave me a NOS never used Data East Secret Service KGB ball lock mech which I was contemplating using for a safe or jail break out. I think I have read that they a little problematic but would change the design a little so it can be possibly used reliably.

will snap pic tomorrow and insert in here

    #19 8 years ago

Cool. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

    #20 8 years ago

You got to add the air horns, and a jump ramp! I just hope you don't offend anyone if you include the flag ebay.com link: 125db Musical 5PC Red Trumpets Dixie Horn W Air Compressor Hose Dukes Of Hazzard

That card game has some SWEET art!

Great idea! Take a look at the Starchild area of KISS for ideas, since there's a kicker and eject where the ball randomly falls into. You have great creativity and could make something new out of this...

Try to incorporate Y-E-E-H-A-W, by using targets or a spell out on display. It could relight kickback, give awards, build jackpot bonus, etc.

You can pick from this multitude of jump sequences. Jumps can register as long or short, with the animation showing the fitting jump to match how far you shot the ball....or the General Lee will tumble into the lake. Points will increase on length of jump.

    #24 8 years ago

Those Duke boys are at it again! Can't wait to see how this goes. Don't worry about programming, I got you covered.

That would be pretty funny. Maybe they could be the villains trying to shoe horn their way back into the seats of the General Lee.

The modern movie remake was absolutely dreadful. It should not even be discussed here.

    #26 8 years ago

I've always been in love with Daisy Duke (all of them)!

    #27 8 years ago

Would also be cool to note that
"Somewhere between 256 and 321 "General Lee" cars were created and mostly destroyed during the series. Less than 20 in various states of disrepair still exist. Despite popular belief, there were no 1970 Chargers used in the series according to all the car builders."

Maybe the that into the game.

You may want to leave the Confederate Flag off of it our you will end up having Jessie Jackson, The Rainbow Coalition, Malcom X, Black Lives Matter, Al Sharpton, NAACP, and any number of other black racist organizations protesting in your driveway.

    #29 8 years ago

I'm not american but I don't consider the confederate flag as racism! But, if most of people really sees it that way, then your suggestion is valid! Why bother with something if not pinball?

    #30 8 years ago

if you leave the flag off you might as well not do it. All in or all out.

    #31 8 years ago

I've never had a problem with the flag but I'm also not black.

    #32 8 years ago

"Uncle Jesse makes the boys do chores around the farm" mode !

    "Dipstick multiball"

"...married your fat sister" bonus multiplier

    #33 8 years ago

Without starting a war, the confederate flag is pretty racist.

That said, to represent the Dukes of Hazzard any other way than the TV show represented it would be a shame.

This is how WB handles it:

Anyone else surprised he's from Texas? The flag is fine to look back on in a fictional vintage TV show. It's when you fly it around in current times and say it's not about racism/slavery. You're not fooling anyone.

Came here to pinside to escape this type of shit.

    - kiss and WWE mech - yes similar idea and started sketch ideas 18 months before those game should that feature as a mate (ddstoys) was very generous and sent me a heap of mechs and of the stern sling shots one was very slim and cut down starting the idea.
    - Hadn't thought about incorporating Y-E-E-H-A-W but will definitely consider - with the jump ramp considering a launch ramp and then on the back side 2 exits epic fail - crashed car into a creek bed which sends the ball to a alternate ramp path and then the completion ramp with possibly a spinner on the entry to that ramp so the spinner counts the jump distance. So creek bed earns a crashed car and 13 spins earns you a crashed car. Rest of the jump ramp earns you points, more spins the bigger the points. Also when the game finishes if you get the most crashed cars (crap driver award) you get your name up.

As for the confederate flag we kids in Australian just thought it was a cool car with cool art and only years later learnt the meaning - blame our schools. I know it upsets some people and it will be on the game but was thinking subtle in 2 places - 1 as an insert as a top view of the car and for something different on the top of the backbox as not usually a place for art on a pinball but my thoughts were it represents the roof of the General Lee and not obviously seen but there and can be covered / removed etc. All the new diecasts are starting to have the flag removed off them.

    Quoted from bayoubilly70:

"Uncle Jesse makes the boys do chores around the farm" mode !
    "Dipstick multiball"
"...married your fat sister" bonus multiplier

can see 2 of these being used.

I also like the narration at the beginning of a episode and can see a way to incorporate that into the game when you hit the start explains what options to go for.

Nelly who is doing the Buffy pin made up a few woodgrain flipper bats a while back with the wood grain hydrographics so plan to use one for the 3rd flipper of Jessie's barn door. Thanks for the custom flippers Nelly.

Still toy might be used for mechanical lock, vertical maybe with a screw; jug lights up "Moonshine Ready", and then you can start "Moonshine Multiball"

One of the ramps has to flow over the hood of the General Lee car toy. In multi-ball mode, you need to getaway by shooting 2 or more balls sliding across the hood within a certain timed sequence to get away.

Siren topper on the top when you're getting chased.

Whom knew a Dukes of Hazzard thread would turn into this?

some people will raise these issues and rightly so but the last thing I want to do is upset people, there won't be a dirty big confederate flag centre playfield where you have to complete the stars, but I would like to have a insert stashed somewhere with a aerial view of the general lee as it just needs it.

    #46 8 years ago

Yeah it's tough with the fucking Puritans of this country. I love the idea having grown up with the show. Don't leave out Enos

nice idea with the bonnet sliding

    and

I was planning on a moonshine machine near the barn similar to what you suggested and then a delivery would be ready to activate and have possible 15 seconds to hit a certain number of shots to finish the sequence and get back to the barn. After a certain time frame Roscoe and Enos multi-ball car chase starts with flashing lights and road blocks (1-2 single drop targets), balls would keep shooting out if drained until you hit the jump ramp or hide in the bushes shot. For each second the 3 balls are in play any shots hit score deducts 1000 points so it pays to finish the mode quickly.

But then you still haven't finished as you still need to make the delivery but police are crashed out so you need to follow the arrows to do the delivery and if after say a minute it turns into a drunk ball (drinking the moonshine) and the flipper buttons now operate the opposite flipper and only way to get out of it is to loose the ball or get back to the barn.

Enos will be there, Daisy has to sweet talk someone...

One of my ideas I had when working on some rules for my Dukes pin was to either pick or base player number on one of the characters. Similar to funhouse, how rudy calls you a different name. Instead the audio coming through the CB it would be the other characters talking to you - so little bo peep, lost shepherd etc. all the CB handles (basically different audio call outs based on which character you get when you start the game) Bo, Luke, Daisy or Uncle Jesse. Did I mention a real CB in the front of the cabinet, and welding the coin door shut.
