#4 5 years ago

lol, I own five pins and happen to own three of these.
I have Doctor who, tales from the crypt and episode one.

I have not played bsd enough to have a good opinion on it and not sure if i ever played fast break.

From the three i own.
I think tales from the crypt has the best game.
Doctor who is the best looking.
Episode one is the most frustrating.

hi Blackbeard im trying to make up my mind in wich one to get

#10 5 years ago

Quite different titles .... Most will say BSD is the'best' but it's def a marmite pin , and I say that after owning/loving/selling it.

I'd rate them

BSD > TFTC > Dr.Who > NBAFB > ..................... by a long way SWE1

I have owned the first 3 in the past, BSD lasted longest, then TFTC, then Who. I have no urge to ever own the other 2

BSD - This is the clear choice out of these games. The only issue now is price. Probably going to cost you more than the others. Though
you might find a players game 3200 bucks. I sold mine years ago and regretted the decision until two weeks back when I bought another.
Game is challenging and might not be the best game for your first rodeo.

Dr.who - I own this game. I would rank it under BSD. If your not a fan don't get this game. Make sure the game is in great condition if you do get.
Not a bad choice for first game.

TFTC - NA - Never played ( Strange ). Theme is really cool. I haven't played or owned it. Guess I should give it a whirl.

Episode 1 - I've played this a handful of times. Gets old fast. If you can get it cheap do it. This thing is heavy as hell.
It is probably not the best choice for a new owner.

I wonder if TFTC is not a bad choice

#15 5 years ago

Dr. Who is just more fun to play for me even though some of the sounds are annoying. The Time Expander is a neat toy and making combos is fun. BSD is good but not much to do other than stacking mb's.

#16 5 years ago

NBA fastbreak is pretty cool if you have two of them

The head to head mode is probably the coolest thing about that pin.

Unless its the Stern you're talking about...

Nba Fastbreak is a cool pin, especially if you like sports and NBA. It’s like an NBA jam pinball. They’re around $2500 and lots of fun. Especially for non pinball people

#21 5 years ago

Dr Who gets my vote over BSD I think, I've just enjoyed it more the handful of times I've played them both. Perhaps not having owned either invalidates my vote though...

#22 5 years ago

NBA Fastbreak - I would put after Dr. Who. Not a bad game but a bit of novelty for me.

Remove ep1 right now, handful of worst games ever created.

Super exclusive ad from the Pinside Marketplace!

I voted BSD, but there are really several factors to consider:

Is there a cap on how much you can spend?

Do you want games from different Eras represented in your collection?

Does your collection have a theme, or are you going for variance?

Do you want pins with various playing styles (i.e. drop tagets, ramp heavy, loaded with toys, long ball play times, difficulty, etc.)?

Are you going for keeping a pin for a ling time, freshening up a lineup, family friendly, or maybe to impress guests?

#25 5 years ago

I enjoy both TFTC and BSD. I’d go Tales today, and I think it would be different answer depending on size of collection

I own TFTC, BSD, and Doctor Who all three fun games but i give it to BSD really cool game with an awesome theme and super fast gameplay.

Thank you Dadtitude.my only concern its about the mist ball.

#32 5 years ago

In order of preference:

Dracula is an awesome game, tough as hell, mist multiball is awesome... kinda ugly tho. I’d love to get one myself.

Doctor Who is also an awesome game, cool multiball, time expander is great... some people just can’t deal with the sound (EXTERMINATE!!). I just got one and love it.

TFTC is a cool game too, it’s got that DE feel some people don’t like tho, and the laugh can grate. Haven’t had one but wouldn’t mind.

NBA is probably cool if you’re a basketball fan, but it’s dated and kinda linear. It’s not on my list but maybe for like $1500... lol yeah right.

SWE1 is also interesting as it’s one of two Pinball2000s, but it gets old pretty fast. Had one and sold it.

Stock sounds are definitely pretty meh. But throw in a pinsound and one or two of the custom mixes and it's a whole new thing.

Two Barry Oursler masterpieces that can be had for not insane money.

Jackbot is another good one.

#38 5 years ago

Doctor Who was my first pin and I still have it. It will never leave my collection. Guests dig the time expander.

#39 5 years ago

Not really a fan of any of these games. They all have limitations or flaws. For resale I’d pick BSD, TFTC & Dr Who in that order. The other two don’t really have a resale value.

#40 5 years ago

Love this post. I have been buying and selling for a while and have had all these games. I know some will disagree but my thoughts on each.
BSD- Not a fan of the theme and multi ball heavy games dont do much for me. It does require some skill to get the stacked jackpots going and you feel so proud when you do.

Dr. Who- One of the best rule sets for its age. Acquiring the doctors to get the bonuses makes this one entertaining. You really need to work at it, but its rewarding to get them all. The bad part is the sound. It gets really annoying, really, really anoying.

Fast break- Good looking machine. Plays really nice. I like the ramps, but the hoop can slow the game a little. The bad, scoring. You can beat on this game for an hour and get 110 points. It's more achievement based. Finish all the challenges and collect a ring. Players are outdated.

Tales/Crypt. One of data east better games. Lots of modes. I love the loop ramp. The bad is the cheesiness of the game. The crypt keeper was always over the top cheesy on the show and it Carrys over to the game. Like every game on the list, if your a fan, it's the game for you.

Swe1. I bought one last year. Sold it the same day before it broke. Too much risk with that game.

It all comes down to preference. As long as it's not swe1 and you like the theme you cant go wrong.

I did a tales with homebrewed uv lighting and gitd titans. Looked great when it was finished

BSD - My favorite pin. Quick and brutal. Simple rules, but quite a challenge. A majority of guests who visit my place have found it addicting. Triple-stacking the multiballs is such a rush. Mist multiball is cool. People speak negatively of it because it scares them, their kids, their spouse, their dog... or they're just not good at it!

Dr. Who - Another Oursler gem. Funky layout. It can also be fast and brutal. Cool shots, but can feel limited. I highly recommend getting the Pinsound upgrade for this title (metal and disco themes are both quite good.)

TFTC - On some days, I prefer this one over Dr. Who. Another great horror pin with an interesting layout. Callouts can sometimes be a little repetitive, as with most Data East pins. I happen to be a fan of DE pins in general, so it doesn't bother me too much. I think this pin holds it's own among other titles that are twice the price.

NBA Fastbreak - Played this one a few years ago. Decent player, but I would never own one. Never connected with this one. Fun to play when you find two that are linked together.

SW Episode 1 - I've never played this pin. Never found it interesting.

I'm about in complete agreement with @AJNada here.... couple extra comments.

I own DW and BSD. I have owned NBAFB in the past. I desperately want to own a TFTC.

Of this list of 5, BSD would be my favorite. The feel, callouts, difficulty, theme, etc...al, just make for a great pin. Fast and brutal, it can really own you. So when you have that awesome game where you slap it back, it makes for great pinball.

DW was bought for the wife and kids, and they love it. I love it. Definitely agree it's a little limited, but there's much more to go for than just the multi-ball. The sound mixes with Pinsound are really awesome. But even without that, it's a great game, and you can play it different ways which I do really like.

NBAFB I actually traded for my BSD. I like NBAFB. I would even own one again if I got a good deal on it. But I loved basketball in the 90s, and it's very nostalgic for me. It's fun, but doesn't have the rush that BSD does.

TFTC is a perfect confluence of theme, campiness, and good pinball for me. More so than some of the other campy horror themed pinball machines out there. I would very much like to add one to my collection.

SWEp1 was terribly boring pin for me. I've played it about 5 or 6 times, and skip it whenever it's in a lineup. YMMV.

I just stumbled back into this thread. I've since played BSD, and my opinion on DW being the pin to choose remains solid.

Did you ever pick any of these up?

I did pick 2 of them now Im wondering how good a white wather would be over a BSD

Since the time that you posted this, I have bought, played, restored and am still enjoying playing Doctor Who. The biggest changes that improved the game from original are the color DMD and the custom sounds on Pinsound+ and new speakers. I am working on a DE TGFTC now, that had a lot of play on a cruise ship in a former life. It is having a lower right flipper issue, even after I replaced the coil, sleeve, plunger and flipper button leaf switch.
