Game Plan - Sharpshooter

Need a little help with a few targets dropping very slowly. I know I'll need to clean them, and the metal as well, but I'm uncertain as to the disassembly procedure. I "think" it goes like this, but I'm worried about bending things, and honestly, could use some guidance. Apparently if you don't own a Williams or Bally the internet/you tube has much less to offer. Who knew???

I guess the first thing would be, does Game Plan share a bank with other manufacturers, if so, I could then look them up, but I haven't found one yet.

I've removed the ring clip and white washer/cap from the rod. Now the rod seems to be stuck as I try to pull it out to release the targets. I have not removed any springs yet either, I'm assuming this is easier when the targets can move freely?

Here is what I have:

The next question would be, what should I clean the targets/metal with? Will Simple Green work for both?

I'm very excited as this fix should bring my game to 98% fully functioning (just a light socket and sound issue left).

Thanks!

It looks like there's 4 1/4" screws holding down the main bracket for the drop target assembly. Take the reset coil off the drop target bracket, or desolder the wires from the coil. Also remove any switches from the assembly (it looks like you have, but just saying to be sure). Take several pics of everything you take apart, every step of the way. With all that disconnected and those screws at each corner of the assembly (that attach it to the bottom of the playfield) removed, i don't see any reason why it shouldn't just pull right up and off.

Thanks, but I just went ahead and said screw it. It's all done. I'll post pics in a little while in case someone else needs the info.

Yeah sometimes that's actually thre easiest way. Did this with a large Gottlieb bank and isn't too bad...other than those pesky springs.

Curse you tiny springs!

In my experience, it's often the *only* way! There's only so much help one can get when it comes to these games. By taking matters in his own hands he learned a great deal more too, I bet. Congrats, OP!

So here is my update/pics:

After removing the clip rings on either end, and then the white caps/washers I eventually pulled out the target reset rod and found this:

At this point I realized that I needed to remove the target assembly completely. I know, duh. As I inspected the surroundings I thought about how much of a b*tc% it was going to be removing every switch - until I saw this:

That made it easier! It was here that I knew I'd be doing a complete cleaning. Upon disassembly I found 2 very bent levers. In all honesty, this could have been from me prying the rod out, but I'm going to go ahead and say they were like this before

The targets were filthy as well, so I Simple Greened them.

I used Brasso on all of the metal to clean it off and smooth it out. What a difference!

Reassembly was fairly smooth. The rod slipped back into place much easier than it did upon removal. So that was a good sign.

Did I take enough pics so I could reassemble properly? Phew, I did. That would have sucked if I got lost at this point. All back together ready to reinstall the assembly to the bottom play field.

After reattachment I checked and adjusted a few switches, reset a couple of springs that wanted to keep popping off, and gave it a test run. Pretty smooth! I only have one target that gets caught or hesitates. I found that that particular target is a little warped so the lip must be rubbing on the way down. I'll have to address that at a later date, as of now I just keep bending the target in place as best I can.

That's all folks. I'm certain you've all done this a million times, but it was cool doing it successfully my first round.

Excellent follow-up!

One thing to check on targets that don't want to drop down easily/properly: the leaf switches that the targets activate can sometimes be sprung too tightly against the targets themselves. This is a case where adjusting both leaves of the switch will probably be necessary. You want to give the blade/leaf that contacts the target enough tension that the target actuates the switch, but not too much that it actually impedes the target from going down. If everything worked smoothly while you had the mech out, there's a good chance you just need to adjust the switch leaves to allow the targets to drop more easily.

Again, nice follow up! Detailed, and helpful to people that will have similar problems in the future.
