Dredd is finally coming together. Been so busy with life, been delayed, but I really like the metallic green. Great mistake that the shop did in my honest opinion! Decals came out great as well. Now to finish the playfield and drop her in!

Well, Green and Blue doesn't match up. It's not a good choice of color. But the most important is that the owner likes

#4604 12 months ago

I can understand and appreciate your feedback. But I actually like it. Pulls the green from the decals, (gloves, knee pads). Originally was to be gold on cabinet and green on wire forms, but I like the switch.

Worst case, I get sick of it and redo the whole thing, all I need is time and money. At least I have lots of time!

SHOUT OUT to Randy at ColorDMD for his excellent customer service! I've owned my JD for 12 years now and finally got around to buying and installing a ColorDMD in my game. I must say, I love the result. JD and some of their owners can be a bit difficult at times, but I must say that Randy had patience and answered all my questions. I have always said that anyone can sell you something. but it's how they support you when you have an issue that makes all the difference in the world. If you don't already have one, I highly suggest adding a ColorDMD to your JD.

JD looks awesome with a Colour DMD, it really suits the machine well.
Currently have my C-DMD in my Fishtales cause poor ol' JD is STILL in many bits awaiting restore (hopefully this year) and although it suits ok in that machine too i don't think it compliments quite as well as in JD.

Listed a Judge Dredd Promo Display in marketplace if anyone is interested.

I could use new ramps for Judge Dredd. It sounds like Freeplay40 may end up making them. I know of a couple other games that need them. Do you need a set too? If so you should probably post on this thread with interest or message Freeplay40 to get on the list.

Any tips before I delve into this issue

Left fire button, as I understand, it's purpose is to allow you to switch game modes, and also, during a ball in play, when it says on the display, press left fire button to launch ball.....it is supposed to launch an additional ball?

Well, it is not launching an additional ball, but it allows to switch between game modes

I'm told that f the left fire button isn't pressed before it times out, then the additional ball will auto launch.....this isn't happening

Pretty new to this game, so still learning the game play

Some advice or troubleshooting tips would be most welcome

Cheers and keep flippin!

The left fire button has two functions. One to select modes, and other is to launch the ball when it gets dropped into the left lane from the Air Raid ramp. It doesn't launch a second ball.

Okay, thanks......so, in gameplay.....when the display shows up, hit left fire button to launch ball.....you still need to first get the ball dropped into left lane?

I'm a little confused why it would come up on the display this message before the ball is ready to be launched?

That message should only pop up when the ball is already in the left shooterlane. So check the left shooterlane switch and/or the switch matrix.

Is this what is called the left shooter lane?

The ball has always auto launched out instantly for me.....I'll play another game and see what happens

If the ball just happens to end up in that lane randomly, it will auto shoot. It only has you fire it if you've gone up the air raid ramp, and dropped it into that lane.

Ahh....I think I get it now.....so, once air raid mode is activated....a timer is started for you to shoot ball into air raid ramp, which puts ball into left shooter lane, then use left fire button to launch ball at judge targets?

If that is all correct, what needs to be done to activate air raid mode?

When the air raid light is on, shooting that ramp will deposit the ball in the left lane and the machine will wait for you to press the left fire button to aim at the rotating lit drop target.

What did the powdercoat run you? If you don't mind me asking.

I like the idea of powdercoating but I'm not sure how much of an import it will have on cleaning or future value.

#4620 11 months ago
Quoted from Klittl06:

What did the powdercoat run you?

Most of the games I do run $300 or so because I choose metallic, candy, pearl colors etc. If I just did a simple color like red or black (one time coat) it would be just over $150.

To me it’s a great look and great savings. Restoring a Williams 1965 Eager Beaver now and you can’t buy the 25 inch front legs. Mine were rusted since it was stored in a persons basement for 40 years. Thankfully this shop near me media blasts them, then powder costs them to look like new!

So I FINALLY solved my haunted JUDGE drops issue. Turns out it was some shorting out ramp flashers.

But the temporary solution of bending the pins isn’t a great one, since after about 50 games, the lights are cutting out again and the drops are also freaking out.

What are good ramp flasher socket replacements for Dredd?

I know the dead world motor info is pretty scarce. I recently had the motor completely seize up enough to bend one of the gear teeth. The two small idler gears on the outside of the motor are supposed to free spin but I had to use a small press to get them off.

30+ year old grease finally collected enough debris and dried out to cause too much friction between all the various shafts etc.

I had to completely tear apart everything, clean, fix the tooth and rebuild.

I am dumping all the photos so hopefully it will help someone else one day.

About the Planet Motor and Gearbox Assembly:

I bought my JD maybe a year ago. While trying to build my spare parts hoard, I saw that MarcoSpec had 12 reproduction Planet Motor and Gearbox Assemblies in stock (the website let me add 12 to my cart). I was feeling poor after the JD purchase, so I decided to wait until I felt rich again.

Alas, when I felt rich enough to buy one, they were sold out.

Does anyone know who reproduced them, and if there is any chance of a another run?

Pretty much un-obtanium new. However if you call Steve at https://www.pbresource.com/, he rebuilds them. You send in your broken one, with a check for the rebuilt one, and he sends it to you. His work is impeccable.

Hmm.....

My JD machine

When I first got it, it kept factory restoring each time I turned it on....set to freeplay and a game would start just fine...so, replaced the battery only like 2 months ago, and it was fine after that.....till tonight, turned it on and it factory restored.....set it to free play and started a game, game started but showed missing balls......but they were there..... turned machine off and back on again, and it reset factory settings.....

Anyone with any tips on what to look at first

Is there any indication of battery damage? Have the boards been worked on before? Any signs of hacks or poor work? Can you post pictures?

To start I would measure the 5V at the driver board and at the MPU. It has got to be close to 5V or you’ll see odd issues. Mine had issues and the MPU was almost .5V less than the driver. Ended up replacing the pins in the connectors at the MPU and driver which fixed it. You can first try unplugging and plugging the power connector on the MPU and driver a couple times to clear it up. That would be a temporary solution for a while and eventually plan on repining connectors.

help needed, so mine will put two balls into the shooter lane and lose track of how many balls are in play on a multiball every other game. in a multiball it will end the ball even when 1 ball is still in play. switch 87 which is the top trough doesnt register when a ball is kicked into the shooter lane, it works by hand but the coil is hitting so fast it cant read it. i ordered new trough opto boards and they are the same, switch wont read. any fix for this or do i have another problem im not aware of and switch 87 is not really used. if your looing at the trough board its light number 7

I ran into this a few times. if the switch doesn't reset it no longer knows that a ball is still there. I'm guessing you are running L1-AT or L1-D? L-7 had some better shooter lane logic to fix this, but of course doesn't do the ring locks.

When I had my Dredd, I was able to mitigate the issue by adjusting the switch so that it released quicker. But it would still occasionally get hung up until I tilted the machine.

I'm trying to dial in my project JD and decide if it's a keeper. It's one of the few WPC games I haven't owned and/or played a bunch of on location. Can you guys hit the sniper shot with the upper mini flipper? I remember playing one on location that I could consistently hit that shot with the mini flipper. I can rarely make it on mine. I'm guessing his flipper angle was a little higher. I'm parallel with the metal guide.

Hey all! Looking for some guidance on a crane issue in that it doesn't want to move... my JD has the Deadworld mod, so balls physically lock, and the game breaks as soon as a multiball starts. It worked fine before I left it alone for about three months and turned it back on.

I've checked all of the associated optos, ran through the tests that should move the crane (unload globe, solenoid test), and it just doesn't want to move; doesn't sound like it's trying to either. I can get the motor to drive the crane if I put a 9V battery on it; so I don't think it's mechanical(?) For yucks, I swapped the Globe's EMI board with the Crane's and it didn't make a difference. I've reseated J118 & J130 headers on the power driver board and checked the wires for continuity. No obvious damage to any of the boards/components, but I haven't pulled anything from the backbox yet.

Oh, and the crane and globe "tick" forward on the solenoid test when the door is open, not sure if that's helpful. When I tested the crane above, the door was closed.

Am I missing something easy? Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you check for blown fuses?

Are you getting power to the crane?

Did you check for blown fuses?

Nothing blown, and continuity's good. I wasn't sure which specific fuse to check, so I checked them all. Honestly hoped for that, because it'd at least give me a place to start.

What's the best way to check for this and where? I'm confident power makes it there (it does the little "steps/ticks" when the door is open in solenoid test), but I guess I don't know if enough is when it should be? Do I just put my voltmeter's leads inline to the motor and check for DC 12V?

Quoted from superford:

help needed, so mine will put two balls into the shooter lane and lose track of how many balls are in play on a multiball every other game. in a multiball it will end the ball even when 1 ball is still in play. switch 87 which is the top trough doesnt register when a ball is kicked into the shooter lane, it works by hand but the coil is hitting so fast it cant read it. i ordered new trough opto boards and they are the same, switch wont read. any fix for this or do i have another problem im not aware of and switch 87 is not really used. if your looing at the trough board its light number 7

i did figure out my issue so others that are new to this pin know, it does have the l1 deadworld mod. 1 out of 30 balls will get picked up in multiball and not make it through the optos in the left ramp. this will mess with the ball count for the rest of the game and maybe even until its powered off. the mod is cool but id rather have a 100% working game and not screw up with im on a rush, ive ordered a L7

Either I bumped something while changing them and now it works, or some of the power that should've been going to the crane was coming from the AA batteries...

I didn't think the AA batteries did anything but keep your score alive when you unplugged it? Saw a bit of corrosion on the far right one, changed them all out and the crane started moving again. I feel pretty dumb for not trying that sooner, just thought they were 6 mo old not 18
