Quoted from wolffcub:Yet another one enters the hobby room. Was asked by a pinball friend to work on this gem. Honestly I came across posts of this title a while back but thought nothing of it. Since the request to rejuvenate it i have looked into it and Im honored to be asked to work on a rare title (300ish made?). Table was received today so work can begin on it right away.
Work is outlined as follows
- finish disassembly of rails
- remove existing pop mylar
- remove existing center mylar
- thoroughly clean surface and inspect
- evaluate existing touch up attempts and how they will affect future repairs
- remove and or prepare existing patch attempts
- fill existing damaged areas
- owner asked that 2 light holes that the previous owner installed that are not stock be filled
- sand existing clear and prep surfaces
- review existing inserts and possibly remove existing clear on them also removing existing lettering / numbering and prep as required
- touch up existing open single colour areas with spot airbrush touch ups - no masking or stencil work will be used on table until locking clear is installed
- apply spot clear in areas to make up for sunken inserts and low spots
- apply first clear to lock in existing paint and minor black touch up areas
- sand and prep for touch up work
- proceed with more open area touch ups
- do custom masking / stencil work to areas that require more complex fixes
- owner is ok with repainting badly cracked white areas under the plastics so instead of a bright white, I will tint to make it look slightly aged to match the other random aged white graphics on the dragons on the field so they blend in nicely.
-review low spots and spot fill with clear
-apply clear
-wet sand
I made a few custom suggestions to the owner about possibly adding a few things to the playfield machinery and he seems onboard. Minor things will be done with the standup targets, drop targets and pop caps to compliment the playfield theme.
Lets get started!

Forgot to ask if you could retheme it to Battlestar Galactica

Project is looking great and coming along decently as you can see.

You missed a spot

Quoted from brenna98:

Why would you not match the color that's there and paint the wear spots with a hand brush?

I'm guessing it has something to do with being a perfectionist.
It's looking pretty damn sharp!

Progress is being made on the other bits!

Well, if he does not like it, I'll pay you for your work and give him my play field
It looks super.

Kind offer! I suspect he's going to be very happy!!

With all the AMAZING work that wolffcub has done on the playfield, targets, etc. I have the task of trying to get the rest of the machine up to near the same level. It's tempting to keep the playfield as an art piece... but these machines are meant to be played!

The cabinet had some interesting layers of paint, grey was added on top of the blue for some reason. Also appears the head cabinet was initially going to be a Catacomb. Lots of sanding and patching!

Then some primer. Decided to do the whole inside and underside of the cabinet, not sure if there is a good reason why they don't do this from factory other than saving some paint. Guess I'll find out in time

I'm still finding blue paint on things... turned out pretty well though.
wolffcub helped me out with some custom stencils made from plastic rather than stickers. These maintain that slight color bleed like it was from the factory, as well as no ridges between colors.
Bit of clear on the cabinet to keep it looking good.

Drop targets before and after with some custom wolffcub airbrushing

Quoted from cottonm4:

Want to sell your red drop targets? Dibs.

Dibs accepted, I'll think it over and let you know. It's not a complete set as per usual..

#108 3 years ago

Bit of sanding spruces things right up. I put some clear on the wood after this to seal it up.

Underside of the playfield also got a sanding and repaint. Nearing the end on repopulating the back.

Last night finished off the populating the underside, exciting to turn it over and get a glimpse with the standups and drop targets in.
Lots of reflection from the overhead lights.. so shiny!

Nearing the finish line, at least I hope.

Items remaining:

- Reassemble and install coin door
- Install LED no flicker adapter
- Pre-drill new playfield rails for screws securing plastics
- Drop in playfield and route/clamp wiring in backbox and cabinet
- Do some good deeds for karma points before powering it back up!

Also need to dial in the spinner, can't wait to take some big rips at it!

#117 3 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Your points really do not come from the spinner all that much.

Even if it subtracted points I'm sure I couldn't resist ripping it every good opportunity.

It's been a while since I played but thought I recall some 50k spinner rips. Plus style points on top.

Back together and up and running!
Still a couple things to finish off, tie up some cables, couple light sockets, install cabinet cards.
Backglass I have is in really nice shape, just need to replace the lift trim which doesn't seem to be all that easy. One is coming from BGResto just in case.

Huge thanks to wolffcub for killing it on the playfield redo!! A playable art piece!!!

Quoted from cottonm4:

Looks exceptional !
Lift trim: Look real close. The lift trim is held in position with 2 small pieces of friction tape.
From the front side, take a shape razor knife and cut into this tape. For me, this weakens the grip enough that I can usually get the rest of the tape to just let go.
A tip I learned from BG Resto is to get some heavy duty, clear Gorilla 2 inch tape and wrap the bottom of the glass on both sides with this tape.
This does 2 things.
1) Adding this tape on both sides of the glass increases the thickness just enough that you can install your lift rail and it will stay put.
2) This tape protects the glass from flaking if you spray on glass cleaner and it manages to deep under the life rail.

Thanks cottonm4 I'll give that a try.

Bit of gameplay, still a few adjustments to make. Will take some video of a lower angle soon.

#130 3 years ago

Something closer to a players point of view, aside from getting to see the score..
Hadn't anticipated the backglass reflection off the playfield, so shiny!

#135 3 years ago
Quoted from transprtr4u:

Can't wait to see it at Yegpin

RumRunner9 told me to bolt it to my floor.. he failed to mention what that was going to do to the carpet though.

It's going to be tough to move but we will see what happens.

Looks like a beauty!

Did you add the post between the flippers?

Did you add the post between the flippers?

I only ask as there were inconsistencies from the factory, different pop bumpers etc. Curios if they produced some with the post.

#147 3 years ago
Quoted from Classic_Stern:

I'm mistaken then. It's 4 of 5. I thought that one did but I got mine just after. You can't do the Kirk pass on mine. Not even close. If you could then it would be ridiculous easy. Dave's, Ed Robertson's, Marcus's and Eric's all had posts.

Have you compared the post placement on all of them to see if it's the same?

The one that slochar mentions in the tournament sounds like it was mounted high up but yours is lower. Could have been a common mod..?

#152 3 years ago
Quoted from wolffcub:

So help me god pingball if you drill a hole in that playfield I will come over and hit you with a stick.
