I'm still finding blue paint on things... turned out pretty well though.
wolffcub helped me out with some custom stencils made from plastic rather than stickers. These maintain that slight color bleed like it was from the factory, as well as no ridges between colors.
Bit of clear on the cabinet to keep it looking good.

Quoted from Pingball:

not sure if there is a good reason why they don't do this from factory other than saving some paint.

What would be the point for the factory to paint the entire inside of the cab? I never saw the inside of a pin until I bought my own. They did not paint the bottom of the back boxes, either. They were money making tools designed to be used up.

Dibs accepted, I'll think it over and let you know. It's not a complete set as per usual..

Bit of sanding spruces things right up. I put some clear on the wood after this to seal it up.

Underside of the playfield also got a sanding and repaint. Nearing the end on repopulating the back.

Last night finished off the populating the underside, exciting to turn it over and get a glimpse with the standups and drop targets in.
Lots of reflection from the overhead lights.. so shiny!

Good work

Fantastic job guys!!!

#114 3 years ago

Nearing the finish line, at least I hope.

Items remaining:

- Reassemble and install coin door
- Install LED no flicker adapter
- Pre-drill new playfield rails for screws securing plastics
- Drop in playfield and route/clamp wiring in backbox and cabinet
- Do some good deeds for karma points before powering it back up!

Also need to dial in the spinner, can't wait to take some big rips at it!

Quoted from Pingball:

Your points really do not come from the spinner all that much. You points come from lighting up all of the yellow lights and shooting for the start rollover. Each yellow light is 2000 points. 9 lights = 18,000 points plus 5000 points for the rollover. And many times you will get a U-turn ball coming back down. That's 23,000 points going up and another 23,000 coming down when they are all lit.

Even if it subtracted points I'm sure I couldn't resist ripping it every good opportunity.

It's been a while since I played but thought I recall some 50k spinner rips. Plus style points on top.

That's if the countdown is done from the first hit. The code specifically disallows re-starting the collection if the first hit isn't done. It's a viable strategy but if you have the spinner lit for 1400/spin and even a moderate shot on a juiced spinner is going to get more than 23k, although not more than 58k if you go all the way up and around, then the pop sends it back after the countdown.

I've watched a fair number of players play DF and most of them shoot the spinner, because that's what they know. What they don't seem to know is it's not worth it until you get some multiplier.

Quoted from Pingball:

At least that or more. Although 50 spins at 100 always feels like a ripoff! Get the multiplier up. I have mine set relatively easy which is rare for me, but I carry over the multipliers (stock option) and the bonus ladder too (option in the custom software). It's not like ball times are exceptionally long on the fist or anything. You can play 20 games in 10 minutes sometimes.

Also I wouldn't discount actually shooting the drop banks down gives you addtional 10k on the right, 15k on the middle, and 20k on the left.

Of course shooting the 9 standups to light the left rollover button for the full 23k means you have to have the extra ball off as it resets when you light that, so you have to start building it up again.

I have never managed to get an Extra ball on this pin. I have my multipliers set to carry over from ball to ball

#120 3 years ago

I have bonus carry over. Multipliers reset. Yellow targets reset. Makes the game more balanced forcing you to shoot around the playfield.

Back together and up and running!
Still a couple things to finish off, tie up some cables, couple light sockets, install cabinet cards.
Backglass I have is in really nice shape, just need to replace the lift trim which doesn't seem to be all that easy. One is coming from BGResto just in case.

Huge thanks to wolffcub for killing it on the playfield redo!! A playable art piece!!!

Looks exceptional !

Lift trim: Look real close. The lift trim is held in position with 2 small pieces of friction tape.

From the front side, take a shape razor knife and cut into this tape. For me, this weakens the grip enough that I can usually get the rest of the tape to just let go.

A tip I learned from BG Resto is to get some heavy duty, clear Gorilla 2 inch tape and wrap the bottom of the glass on both sides with this tape.

This does 2 things.

1) Adding this tape on both sides of the glass increases the thickness just enough that you can install your lift rail and it will stay put.

2) This tape protects the glass from flaking if you spray on glass cleaner and it manages to deep under the life rail.

You had great game there, man. Dragonfist is a hard one to play.

You need to make a clear poly protector to go under that plastic. That is how that particular piece of plastic gets broken a lot. It needs to be heavy gauge plastic or it needs to be screwed to the play field for extra bracing.

It looks good. Wolfcub did a fantastic restoration.

I only ask as there were inconsistencies from the factory, different pop bumpers etc. Curios if they produced some with the post.

They did. Some had posts from factory and some didn't. All I have known of had the post. The 5 I have seen. The NOS field many years ago I saw out of OKC also had the hole for it. I like the post on the game because it's frankly a hindrance and adds a fake false sense of security.

#143 3 years ago

The one you shipped me didn't have the post Bill. The one that the canadian tournament guy has with the post makes the game ridiculously easy.... must be installed too high so you can do the Kirk pass with it.

I'm mistaken then. It's 4 of 5. I thought that one did but I got mine just after. You can't do the Kirk pass on mine. Not even close. If you could then it would be ridiculous easy. Dave's, Ed Robertson's, Marcus's and Eric's all had posts.

Mine does not have a post, but it also was restored so it may have been removed. For this game, I don't believe it's needed.

Stars on the other hand.....

Have you compared the post placement on all of them to see if it's the same?

The one that slochar mentions in the tournament sounds like it was mounted high up but yours is lower. Could have been a common mod..?

One of them I saw looked off to the right oh so slightly but I don't trust anything when these were built because the tolerances were terrible. As for height. I have seen them in the same location. They are low compared to a "Kirk Post" like on Gamatron, Stars, NB, etc. Not even the same because on those you can let the ball come down the inlane and it bounces to the other side. My DF its not even in the area to do that. I am going to take mine out for some play time this weekend. I honestly think the location causes more problems then helps and actually adds to the confusion / speed of the game. You believe it is going to help and in almost all cases its a "Fail".

I can also see where it could of been added later either by operator and or the factory because of complaints on ball times. Honestly the game is brutal (which is why we love it) and I could very well see either operators or factory trying to help in some way.

My curiosity now will have me doing more research. Flyer doesn't help much. I bet Seemus may know or Joe.
