My first Dragonfist build. Nice to be doing one I've never done before. Hell, I've only ever seen one once.
I'll be using Mirco pf, CPR plastics.
Machine will be built using old Hot Hand box, and a 8BD backbox.

Im not sure when my harness (3rd Coast) will be done, so I am doing some random things to be ready.
Starting with the stand up targets. This game had yellow targets, so I am converting these red ones I got from PBL.

New rails made from 1/2" solid oak. I'm making an extra set for a friend who will be building a DF also.
Also cleaned and painted the pf stiffeners.

This game originally came with red drop targets, which are impossible to find. After a conversation with Steve Young, I tried dyeing a white one.
I think it worked well.
I have a bunch of old targets that I just need to remove any designs that are on them (orig were plain red), and dye them at same time to get consistent color.

Can you give some details on the dye process? Ive never seen that done for drop targets.

Just kicking & Punching the shit out of some Dragonfist last night.

Quoted from jgreene:

1/2 gallon hot water (almost to a boil), add 3 tbsp cherry red Rit dye, let'm simmer for 1/2 hour.
Dinners ready.

I'm lucky to have a bunch of OG targets to use.

This is on my to do list, eventually. I look forward to using your process as a go by!

Me too but this looks like it'll be outdoor on the grill. For me, boiling red dye in the kitchen with white countertops would be a disaster.

All plastics in place, waiting on more rubbers and a few more posts to finish topside.
Good looking playfield

The red targets sure look good.
Worth the trouble.

The weather here is starting to get milder, so I'll be starting on the cabinet. This is a really clean Hot Hand, so I will strip the parts, and get it ready for paint.

Cabinet was in great shape, compared to what I'm used to. Only repair needed was a strip on the back of backbox was missing. So I replaced with 1/2" plywood.

Glaze applied, ready to sand (with #120).
Supposed to have warm day tomorrow, so I'll prime and apply base color outside.

Weather was great today, so I didn't let it go to waste.
Primer/sealer will be sanded (#800) tomorrow, and base color applied.

Original legs cleaned with wire wheel, and primed.
Gotta use etching primer if u take them down to bare metal.

I've found that if you apply the "hammered" silver paint before the primer fully dries, u get a much better texture. Looks very close to what Stern did back then. it was heavy hammer time.
Give the primer 15 min, then, hit it.
I'll give these 3 coats of auto clear to protect.

Appreciate that tip. A good hammer texture is hard to get.

Stencils removed. A little bit of touch up needed, but not much.
Wish they were all this easy

Getting ready to install legs, and realized I had no cabinet protectors left.
I can just make some out of aluminum angle I get at depot.
This comes in 4' lengths, and can get 10 or so out of each one. Only takes 15 min
