    Quoted from o-din:

My 10 year old Mac Mini is still working just fine for what I need it for.
Never had to spend a dime on antivirus software or repairs....

Pretty much the same thing with the majority of PC users. Both sides can claim superiority by pointing to the anomalies of the other side but for most people - shit just works.

Anymore - the worst and most costly hacks tend to be on the Linux side. There are definitely down sides to being "open sourced"... the hackers have just as much access to the source code.

    Quoted from o-din:

I had no idea a PC would last 10 years with no anti virus software. So is that all just a scam?

Sheesh! Mac ownership really IS a religion.
Yes, I do have a *free* scanner on my PC. And can you guess how many warnings or actual Viruses I have received *ever*? 0
But then I don't go to porn sites, Chinese-junk-are-us sites or open "you have won the UK lottery" email links.

...and osx.KeRanger doesn't exist, either? Or is this just a scam?
Backdoor.MAC.elanor? Smile for your picture! Or was that just a scam?
Just consider yourself lucky that you are part of such a small user's base that your computer is, for the most part, ignored. FYI - 2015 held the record for most Mac virus attacks ever -- more attacks than the previous five years combined. And 2016 was predicted to be worse but results haven't been disclosed. Or is this news just a scam?

Some people like living in the past.

Defrag? Wow, I remember that one from years ago, must have been prior to 2012 when the last time I ran defrag. Nice to know that I will never need to run it ever again.
Virus scans? How about the Keranger or Mokes.A fiascos from 2016 and more predictions of apple viruses predicted to be worse than ever for this year?
Adware not on mac? Really? Apple support pages have tons of people asking how to get rid of adware.
No hassle? Same for PC... plug it in and it just works.
Some of you guys really need to get out of the past.

I am an owner of AAPL stock but I have never owned an Apple product. Cultist keep buying them, it helps my stock's values.

Just realized my Dell laptop is from 2004 and that the warranty expired 12 years ago. Still running just fine. Hardware is a 'bit' dated, so he now has a cushy job compiling PALASM code and controlling the programming of EPROMs and CPLDs. I think that just might be a little bit beyond the 8 years that some posters mentioned.

And yet... my Dell 2004 laptop is still running strong. Never upgraded RAM. Never replaced drive. Never had a malfunctioning touch pad. Never been inside the box at all, upgrade the hardware or "tinker with the settings".
Looks like hell from bouncing down a flight of stairs but runs great. Too slow for respectable internet connection speed anymore but works great for compiling code and programming EPROMs and CPLDs.

And we also have an operational Mac SE approaching the 30yr mark. We keep him running to control a test fixture utilizing GPIB. Still runs but has had numerous rebuilds done to keep it that way. Just replaced old SCSI drives again - them puppies are getting tough to find. Interesting to see the signatures of all the engineers on the inside of the case.
