My only concern.... Will the diode/led emit enough light? I don't think they will 
Or is this designed to use a clear dome?

I do not know enough about Diode LED's, but it sounds like you can really get them to be bright depending on the voltage. I guess it has a transistor that is amplifying the voltage... But then again I am a noob when it comes to this.

Personally I would sand the inside of the clear dome to frost it.
