Quoted from Fairground:

I dont know who owns this dog but i took the pic outside the grocery store, it was a cold day :)image.jpg definitely loved.

It looks like his pillow is leashed. Like, as long as this pillow doesn't get away, this dog isn't going anywhere.

There's plenty of opportunity to adopt greyhounds. If that's a breed you're interested in, please check into that!

I hate to be a bummer, but we lost our dog, Brewer, in July of this year. It was awful. We even had a moment weeks before his death where we realized how healthy our 12-13 year old dog was. Things turned really fast, and he was gone.

I miss him every single day. I still open the door slowly expecting him to be behind it waiting for me to get home. I have to stop myself from whistling aloud for a little bit of camaraderie and unconditional loyalty.

He was all about his tennis balls for almost of his life. Try to give him a treat? Get lost. Throw the ball. And I'm serious when I say no one was more excited about a fresh snowfall.

We miss having a dog around the house. We're thinking about getting a dog over the summer after a trip we have planned. My wife sort of has me talked into a puppy.

The breed I keep coming back to is a Cane Corso. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm pretty particular with characteristics, and so far it seems to check all the boxes.

#2064 4 years ago
Quoted from bssbllr:

Make sure to have her talked into taking care of the puppy stages. Good times.

Those are badass looking dogs.

She's never had a puppy, so she wants to have the experience. I've had the experience, and while it's rewarding, it also really tries your patience. If I am going to get a powerful breed, I would want to make sure it's as a puppy, particularly with kids.

#2067 4 years ago
Quoted from Who-Dey:

Yes and they can kill people really easy also. I had a friend that had one that was HUGE and it was so protective that he had to get rid of it because he was afraid that it was going to attack someone and get him into a lot of trouble. Then last straw was when it killed his other dog. Im not saying that they are bad dogs but I personally wouldn’t risk owning one, especially if you have kids.

The narrative that all breeds can be dangerous is true, but also a little disingenuous.

A dog like that NEEDS to be raised carefully and deliberately. I grew up around dobermans and rottweilers. All of them were fantastic dogs after some really careful training.

I really get the apprehension, and I appreciate the concern. I'm also really confident in my ability to train and handle a dog. It's really important to me and something I take seriously.

We put in our deposit on our puppy today. It's coming from the Mastiff parents pictured below, and I couldn't be more excited. We're getting a female, so if it takes after its mom, it should only be about 170lbs...

I'm looking to brush up on some training resources before we take it home in about 2 months. If anyone has advice on a minimalistic, useful, free, and reputable site for puppy training, I'm looking.

Quoted from Jaybird815:

I had an English Mastiff, he got to 195lbs, great dogs, they love to just lounge around, surprisingly, be prepared for a lot of shedding, seems like it’s year round, lol. The most important thing with these is they have to be taught early who is in charge as they can be stubborn as hell.
https://mastiffsavvy.com/mastiff-dog-training-tips/

Yeah, shedding isn't great, but we're prepared for it. We had a lab/shepherd and he shed a lot.

Quoted from Whysnow:

amazing dogs. We had many over the years when growing up.
Are you hoping for apricot or brindle?
As for training, I suggest just doing some online research. The Cesar way.
He is actually really good at behavioral training and understanding how to speak doglish
https://www.cesarsway.com/category/dog-training/
Lots of vids out there, but it really is just about you learning how to train. All dogs are smart and trainable if you speak their language.
Also, start a fund now for ACL and other issues. You will have them (unless super lucky) and they are costly. The one problem with mastiffs
DO lots of research on what, how, when to feed, esp while they are growing at an exponential rate. The research and effort now will pa off in dividends over the life of the pup.

Ours was just born on 4/12, so a little early to tell for sure. She's either fawn or apricot, we're hoping for apricot.

I am a big believer in Cesar. I'll definitely be brushing up on his stuff.

That sucks to hear about ACLs. We figure with a big dog we'll have some big costs. We're hoping if we're careful we can avoid some of them. One of the breeders we talked to said that we should avoid anything other than a short walk when they're under a year since they're growing so fast.

Quoted from chuckwurt:

My old dog Palmer was terrified of water when I got him. But he also had terrible separation anxiety. So to break him of his fear of water, I took him to red river gorge and put a river between us. No way to get to me unless he crossed.
He ran up and down the banks on the opposite side trying to find a way across until he just broke down and swam across.
After that, he was obsessed with swimming. He would get into any body of water he could find. Haha[quoted image]

My lab mix was the same way. We didn't even realize it until we moved to a house with a pond. I tossed his ball in there, and he ran along the shore whining. We worked with him. Walked in the water along the coast, gradually getting him more comfortable over time. When he finally realized he loved water, it was probably my favorite moment as a pet owner. It was really rewarding to see him reach his potential (with a ball, anyway) as a water dog.

I'm definitely a fan of big dogs, but pugs are still one of my favorite breeds. We watched my brother's for a year while he was going through some things. That dog gave me a good laugh at least once a day. He once shit in my roommates room for my birthday. To this day, the best gift anyone has ever gotten me.

Luna has been a huge hit in our house. She's been almost unbelievably tolerant and has a great temperament. She has a lot of personality, and seems to be pretty bright. She's also incredibly lazy. We have a leash on her most times, but we're mostly carrying her outside to relieve herself, and back in (she'll just lay down and go back to sleep otherwise).

After having her for about a week, we realize we have about 3 bursts of energy a day, lasting about 10 minutes each. I expect that to get more intense and longer as she gets a little older. I might be completely wrong. Honestly, just based on her personality so far, I could see her being a speedbump through those years.

She's really sweet, and will curl up next to you to take her naps. She terrorizes the kids during some of those energy bursts, but they're never alone with her, and she seems to be slowly picking up on it not being a game. With a couple 3 year olds, it's pretty tough to get them to make it boring and walk away, but we're right there to intervene and reward her when she loses interest.

My oldest daughter (6) has really impressed me. She wanted a small dog. My wife and I are not small-dog people (pugs are the exception). She is absolutely in love right now, and has taken a serious interest in dog training. She's done remarkably well, and Luna respects and listens to her (when she's conscious). She told me this week she wants to be a dog trainer when she grows up.

I love birds. I had cockatiels growing up. My parents still have one, and hes definitely a little asshole. He cracks me up, and I love it. He'll come at you all sweet like he wants you to scratch his head, and then he bites you. He follows that up with a self satisfied little song and a beak grind.

Quoted from NY2Colorado:

How many nicknames does your dog have?
Does your dog have a backstory that you've made up for him or her?

My friend from college used to call my dog a 'geeber' ("whooo's a geeber?!"). Got him all worked up, so it stuck. Now all good dogs get called geebers.

Otherwise just random names in goofy voices. Today I called my dog 'Pup McDouglestein' for no good reason.

Quoted from PinballSTAR:

He was diagnosed with a heart murmur 4-5/6 scale 2 days before we got him. We had option to not take him, but we named him already so he was already ours, right ?
The cause of the murmur is two narrow passages - an aortic stenosis and a pulmonary stenosis. He’ll have a balloon procedure to widen the areas to hopefully improve his heart and give him longevity. He’s healthy, just doesn’t run as much as his sister, another Newfoundland, Savannah...

Thanks everyone for kind words !

Thanks for taking him in, and taking good care of him

We're watching a friend's puppy over the long weekend. The corgi and mastiff get along pretty well, though the size difference does create some problems during play.

Luna is getting big, now 50lbs. She's up to about 6.5 cups a day during this growth stage.

I thought I was ready for drool, but I never really anticipated this. It doesnt bother me, mostly pretty funny to try to watch the whole family dodge it. Nothing but good natured groans when she gets someone or a piece of furniture. I look forward to her slopping up guests.

I'm elated with her temperament. Shes been phenomenal with the kids, and seeks them out for attention. Her relationship with my oldest (6) is really special.

Giant dog breed stuff is pretty thin. We thought it was important to get ours a bed that would help take some stress off her joints. I opted for a memory foam mattress and cut it in half to come away with 2 really good beds for about $100. A twin sheet wrapped around twice works pretty well.

When I make plans to hang out with people, I always consider whether I might have the opportunity to see a dog-friend. Odds of my attendance are directly correlated with the amount of dogs present. If there's another attendee that has a dog, I lobby that their dog be invited on their behalf.

When I arrive at any said function I'll of course greet the people with pleasantries, but it's really just so I won't be asked to leave before I can kick it with the dogs.

Luna is on her 5th collar. I think this one should last. It's amazing how little stuff there is for giant dogs out there. We had a really solid leather collar, but the d ring snapped while she was on a good trot on her lead. She didnt seem to notice. The rest of them she just outgrew. I'm also going to be making a leash out of climbing rope..

Just a tip, teach your dog hand signals to go along with your verbal commands.

I've been doing it with our pup and it works really well. Even when the kids are being obnoxious she can focus on my visual commands. Should she lose her hearing, she'll at least still be able to take commands.

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

Today was a very hard day, as we had to put our beloved Rosie Down.
She made it to 13-1/2.
Rosie came to us by a chance visit to a puppy place, as 2 big eyes stared us down from a crib.
My wife and I were hooked within minutes.
What we enjoyed, was pure sweetness. Self kept, never demanded or begged, independent, yet with you at every right time.
Sometimes it seemed like her whole goal was to be a person.
She tried her best to talk, and we managed a few rough, "I rove you".
The last year and a half was more special to me, as Covid, and a major back issue, left us sharing heating pads, Naps and snacks
on the bed from 4-6 almost every day.
Something truly bonding when you are on their level, and sharing food.
More tears, then words. Rosie will be sorely missed.
Some pics.

We're watching my friend's corgi again for 10 days. These 2 haven't seen each other for probably 6 months. The corgi is a little food aggressive and tends to get a little possessive of people and things, so we're going to work on that. Otherwise they're getting along pretty well!

Quoted from screaminr:

I just found out our mate bssbllr (Bob Marley)
passed away from cancer the other day .
He gave indications but I didn't realise how sick he was .
I hope he had a chance to watch the Bob Marley documentary I recommended to him .
This is the most positive thread on pinside , and there's a core group of guys who I recognise through their avatars , and I'm really upset I'll no longer see Bob .
You're in my thoughts and prayers mate , you'll be sorely missed .
RIP Bob

Terrible news. Thanks for letting us know. I always enjoyed his posts. I think his son is on here too - condolences to the family.

Quoted from hwyhed:

When I found my boy Sammy 5 years ago (of all places on kijiji) it stated that he had 3 legs..apparently born like this. He has 4 legs, but he’s missing the paw..more like a stump. But he does everything a normal dog does, he’s a fast runner, and I wouldn’t change a thing about him
