It was a rough week last week. Lost one of my boxers, my boy Hank, to cancer. Worst feeling ever when you’re making that last trip to the vet.

Always chilled in the gameroom with me, and loved the speech and infinity lights on Xenon. Will absolutely be missed.

Thanks a lot fellas, all of the comments are really appreciated. It really blows. Sorry about yours too Dee.

Found out he had cancer three weeks ago via ultrasound. He declined very quickly.

I rescue boxers, I have lost three of them. Have one left, Jessica. Got a call years ago that the rescue had a two-year-old they found wandering the streets of Philly. He was really disheveled, had been used as a prep dog for pitbull fighting. Had scars all over his legs and face. They were going to put him to sleep that day.

I hauled my ass down to Philly and picked him up. Awesome dog for eight years, and he had a much better life with us than he did his first two. My daughter is freaking heartbroken.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

Do you mind sharing what was going on with him when you took him to the vet to get checked out? Did he stop eating or something? Also what do you think his age was?

Out of nowhere he started pissing in the house, all over the hardwood floors. He had never done that once in his life. Copious amounts of urine, it wouldn’t stop. They kept saying he had some kind of parasitic infection and give him antibiotics. Blood labs were essentially normal.

Then he started getting severely lethargic, not eating as much. X-ray was negative, then they did an ultrasound and found multiple masses all over several organs. That was only three weeks ago.

Then he started laying around even more and twitching oddly, so we took him back. Vet said at that point he was in pain. Had to make the tough decision. If he was in pain, I said I would take him back.

Quoted from yzfguy:

She was old and trying to hang on for us, and I finally realized I was being selfish to make her suffer.

That’s what I prevented. Didn’t want to get stuck in that loop. It’s so easy to.

Quoted from zr11990:

Colsond3 I knew there was a reason I liked you. Besides your passion for vampires you have a passion for Boxers. If you come across a young one that needs a home I will be on the lookout for one soon.

Thanks man. Check the local boxer rescue if you have one, but I’ll keep an eye out too. There’s a huge one based out of Allentown, where PinFest is. We got our first one, Joey, out there.

It’s a relatively painless process. They come and do an evaluation of your house to make sure it’s suitable, and you get approved within a few days. They usually have a listing of a ton of boxers on their site. At least this one locally does.

Quoted from zr11990:

I checked the local boxer rescue and happily, for the dogs, they are fresh out. I will keep looking.

That’s always a good sign, not so good for Fisher. I’ll keep my eyes out.

Quoted from Mike_J:

When you lose a dog, do you think it is best to get another right away or is it better to wait for a period of time?

I customarily start looking within a week or two, just so my female boxer isn’t alone. She’s getting towards the end at almost 11 years old, and slowing down, so I’m not sure I want to bring another one in right away.

I don’t know if dogs realize loss in any form or significance the way we do, but she has survived the loss and outlived two brothers already. She definitely mopes around for a while after she loses them, but I think I want to spend time concentrating on her while she’s around. I’ve had her since she was a few months old.

She slept with her head on my chest back then, and she still does to this day. I’ll be a damn trainwreck when she leaves the planet.

Like Lloyd said...I think it’s up to each person as to when they are ready.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

I think dogs absolutely have feelings and realize when people or other animals around them die. I believe that they grieve and have emotions just like we do. Dogs are more intelligent than a lot of people think i believe. There are lots of studies that supposedly prove that dogs arent very smart, i dont believe that for a second.

I don’t believe that either. And that was my point. She definitely grieves, lays around and does nothing. Did it with Joey after he passed.

I just don’t know how long they grieve for. I guess now that she’s alone, she realizes it more as well. She hasn’t been alone in 11 years. I got Hank relatively quickly after Joey passed.

Quoted from jsandjs:

Sorry to hear about your pup Hank, I get what your saying about the last trip to the vet, I lost my boxer girl Ellie five years ago and it still stings.

Yeah, it doesn’t go away fast. Great looking pups there.

Quoted from Atari_Daze:

@Colson3, very sorry to read of your loss! It is a sad thing indeed.

Thanks George. Appreciate that. Great job with the greyhounds…my neighbor adopts greys as well. I think he has 4 right now.

Caught Jess sleeping in the game room, sad to watch her wander off on her own and just lay around. I don’t think she liked that I turned the lights on sporadically. So much gray in her face compared with the picture on the bottom with Hank from 4 years ago.

WTF is wrong with people? Sick bastard. Thankful for people who do what you do.

You took the words right out of my mouth. What ass would do that?

Quoted from Daditude:

Here's my gentleman. His name is Hulk. He weighs in at 153 lbs. We got him from a family that couldn't take care of him. They left him in a crate all day and a doggy day care all night.

That’s a good looking dog there. Big boy at 153...wow. Friend of mine has three Great Danes. I call them horses...dogs are sweet, and gigantic.

So I didn’t wait that long.

A family friend was going to give their 1 1/2 year old Goldendoodle to the pound. They couldn’t train her. It was hard to say no.

Dog is huge, but looks way different after a trip to the groomer. Jessica, my 11-year-old boxer, isn’t happy about sharing her bed.

Quoted from clg:

Super smart dog which means she is very trainable but if she figures out you don't really mean something she is all over that too. Consistency has been key with her and she is, of course, a very good girl.

Thanks! I’ve actually heard that, but unfortunately she doesn’t seem too bright. Maybe it was just inadequate training from the previous owner.

So it looks like my plans of holding off after my boxer Hank passed away last year have been circumvented by my daughter (but my wallet).

Meet Brian. And he found a safe sleeping spot.

Quoted from mtn-:

I'd like to smell your boxer pup, colsond3. I used to have a boxer too, his name was Junior. He had to leave in 2009, due to old age and you all know.
I still have his picture on my wall.[quoted image]

Awesome looking boxer there. Lovely markings. I’ve lost two that I rescued, so I definitely feel your pain.

He smells like a puppy. Haha. He’s only 9 weeks old, and his coat is still soft as silk. Jessica (my other older boxer) is actually jumping around and playing with him quite a bit, and she’s turning 12 this month.

My pup Kevin is waiting for me to fire up some games...or protecting my three vampire pins from the sunlight.

Quoted from ultimategameroom:

Did you name him after me or?

Definitely.

Quoted from hwyhed:

What Kevin is probably thinking is what game is Colsond bringing into this area this weekend..

In the car right now. LOL.

Quoted from zr11990:

Well I want to use this thread to say goodby to Lucy. Lucy was rescued from the street about 8 years ago and has survive to auto encounters and broken jaws knees and cancer. Her cancer is back and the vet says it’s time. I can’t be there because I am at my sons college graduation. This is her memorial

Quoted from yzfguy:

Aww. Sounds like she lived a full life. Sorry for your loss.

I second that. If not for you, she may have been gone much sooner. Getting any dog is pretty much ensuring eventual heartbreak....but it doesn't make it any easier when the time actually comes.

Sorry for your loss as well.
