Quoted from screaminr:

I wasn't going to say anything , but I've been thinking about this all day .
You say he will cuddle into you , then he can growl at you ?
And he almost bit your hand once . He also growls at the bitch you got him , and they fight sometimes ?
And he barks at people .
and you want to put him down ?
All of these things my dogs have done .
Find an animal behaviorist , find someone who can handle him , get one of those padded suits or put him in a pen where he can't get anyone .
You chose to get a vicious breed of dog and now you're surprised he's aggressive ?
You sound like you're afraid of your dog , and he's picking up on that , he needs a leader .
I've had a few beers and don't want to sound like a cunt but I don't want to see a dog put down if it's not necessary .

No worries, I’ve had Germans shepherds so used to aggressive dogs. Not scared of him, I’m a big bloke. Already went to one of the best dog handling people who are experts in dog behaviour etc and like I said earlier they thought he had a brain problem and didn’t want to know. These people have been on tv etc.
Also went to another dog specialist for 3 weeks in house trading when he was 9 months old and said he was a strange one/puzzle and came back even more aggressive, they took the money and ran! Later got in contact again with the other specialist and they just said good luck!

There’s aggressive and there’s aggressive/unpredictable, never seen a dog behave like this one and I’ve had dogs for over 40 years. Also been around other peoples aggressive dogs, nothing like this one has turned out.
He has bit other people for no reason in a flash, he launched at my granddaughter from under a table once and luckily nothing happened.

Not going to put any dog down unless it is necessary. If he tears someone’s face off that would be terrible, if somebody else had him I’m pretty sure he would have been put down a long time ago and everyone thinks I’m crazy for not already putting him down.

Had him 4 1/2 years from a pup so think I should know him by now.

Quoted from yzfguy:

A friend of mine had a dog that was vicious and thought he was the alpha in the house. My friend, being very old school, saw what was going on and tolerated it until the dog bit him unprovoked. It's sounds terrible, but he actually had a full blown fist fight with the dog and the dog almost got the better end of it because he just would not back down. After that fight, the dog accepted his place of non dominance and they were fine for his whole life.
I'm not advocating animal abuse, just pointing out that sometimes it can be a dominance issue.

Tried something like that, this is the only dog that wouldn’t back down. Probably die fighting.

Interesting observation .
I would never condone any type of cruelty on any level .
But dogs aren't politically correct and at the end of the day , they are pack animals and they obey the dominant figure .

Obviously your in a difficult position .
I wish you all the best .
I just hope you find a solution where your dog lives out his life .

Thanks, I’m now thinking we will try and scan him and blood tests to see if he has any underlying conditions that might be causing him problems before I make a decision. Absolute last resort, trust me. Been fighting my family for a long time over him.

I had something similar happen with my Rottweiler, it turned out to be a brain issue after taking him to several specialists and spending thousands of dollars. We decided to put him down, although it was one of the tougher decisions of my life. I could live with that outcome, I don’t think I could’ve if he ended up maiming or killing someone. I don’t envy your situation at all. Best of luck as I know what you are going through.

Thanks, this is what an expert told me could be causing his strange behaviour. Luckily my wife works in an equine hospital and they treat staff pets at cost.
Just making the situation safe for the vet I’m worrying about, will have to drug him I guess before they can look at him.

Quoted from Lostcause:

I’m having to seriously think about having my dog put to sleep, he is so unpredictable and wants to attack most things. He is very aggressive and went to bite my hand the other day, it was so quick it was shocking. Luckily it must have been a warning as it just grazed my fingers. He has been aggressive since a pup and has bitten a few people but luckily only very lightly.
He has been away for training at a great cost and came back worse.
There is a security dog training company near us ( not above ) only about 8 miles away and one of the best in the UK who I went to see first for a consultation and they said they have never seen a dog like him with the wildness and reactions and thought maybe he had a brain issue! They refused to help us. I just didn’t believe it but think they are probably right as we have tried for nearly 5 years now and he is getting worse. The bitch we got him which we thought would help even dislikes him as she is even growling at him to stay away from her sometimes and they have got into fights.
It’s come to a head now as he is now limping and has an issue with his front paw, something wrong inside as no infection. He will not let me look at it as he will get very aggressive and bite me I’m sure, just will not let me look properly. I have tried.
Now I could get it looked at but know if it is operated on he will not let anyone near him to tend to it, just getting him sedated or in a vehicle will be very hard.
My wife works for an equine hospital so treatment is not a problem if it’s safe but one of the vets told her if we want to put him to sleep it’s quite understandable and he would do it due to him being dangerous/unpredictable. He is a powerful dog.
He has to be put out if anyone comes in the house and even the neighbour this weekend asked us to keep him in because he is having his fencing replaced and the people doing it said they wouldn't do it if my dog is in the garden even though we have a 6’ chainlink fence next to his! He is a scary dog to most people.
Just had to get this off my chest, not sure what to do. Thanks guys and sorry to go on, seems this dog wants to rule!

Welcome Ella.

My new buddy, 1 year old female australian cattle dog / rat terrier mix.

Good to have a heeler type dog again. Haven't had one since my last blue heeler had to be put down 11 years ago. He was almost 17.

Our Airedale Terriers Louie (7 yrs) and Walter (1 yr)! Wife and I spent about five months living in Raleigh on a work assignment of mine, so a couple of these are from the (excellent) dog friendly and LE heavy barcades up there. Boxcar Raleigh and Boxcar Durham. Miss the convenience and access to all those great games!

The one with the very 70’s plaid tile is from our basement, pre-remodel... oof. Flooring has come a long way from there.

That's just downright decent of you and a mighty generous offer. Unfortunately NB is as far East as we are going.

I have a Sister and God daughter in Halifax. I'd definetly take a rain check if the invite remains open.

No issue - I was looking at a summer trip back to alberta but the cost of the rental car is more than our flights, hopefully the lack of computer chips for vehicles gets straightened out soon

Just an update if anyone is interested to know what happened to my dog, he was put down today. Classed as very dangerous.
He fought until the end and now he can rest in peace, a horrible day.
Upside my other dog seems happy and can relax now also, she can sleep inside the house instead of going out to the kennels at night.
That’s her looking at me.
RIP Zeus.

Im so sorry for you having to put your buddy down. The loss of a dog,is getting too overwhelming for me anymore. I cried for three days straight when I lost Hercules three years ago, he's the Rottweiler in my avatar.
I remember being on a job a long time ago,and these bastards were laughing, because one of the Carpenters stayed home because his dog died the day before! I'll never forget these cruel bastards laughing like they did!
I almost wish I never loved dogs like I do because It's just too heartbreaking to lose them anymore.
The Jack Russell terrier in my avatar,is going through chemo treatments now for lymphoma cancer. I could buy a very nice pinball machine for what her treatments are costing me,but I love her more than any pinball machine! I can't even imagine loosing my little Millie

#4232 2 years ago

Yeah it’s rough when it happens, but more than worth it. I cannot imagine the crazy hit to my quality of life if I couldn’t have dogs in my life. Glad I don’t have to worry about it!

Thanks guys, very quiet here tonight. As much of a maniac he was and stress he caused us I am seriously missing him. Dogs for you!
In the last 20 years I’ve lost 2 German shepherds and 2 St Bernards, absolutely heartbreaking they just don't live long enough. Had to give my 8 year old Labrador to my son because Zeus was trying to rip his throat from underneath and he was only 6 months then!
Had him nearly 5 years and seems like yesterday when I picked him up at 9 weeks old, I need a drink!

His name is Dudley, funnily enough our surname is Moore. A friend of ours bred him and gave him to us when he was about 2, never seen such a big Labrador with a huge head. He was paired up with our St Bernard, they were best buddies and cuddled into each other. Have a pic somewhere so will try and find it.

God I feel awful this morning.

Hercules had the same surgery. Even on pain meds. the poor guy cried at night time. It broke my heart, seeing him in that much pain. He had the surgery in the middle of summer, and it was way too hot for him to walk outside for his rehab. I taught him to use our treadmill. It was very easy teaching him to use the treadmill. It was the funniest thing seeing him do the treadmill, while I sat there next to him watching TV.
