Recently I was watching Lone Star Law, and a dog jumped in the game wardens truck, and he said "oh no, you have to stay here today".

Reminded me of Blackie.

Blackie was a black lab mix, that strayed in to Dad's construction company yard around 1989.

That dog was the smartest, and easiest to train dog I was ever around my whole life.

He loved to go to Dads lake. First thing when we got there he would jump out of the truck, run get in the water knee deep, and stand there drinking and peeing at the same time.

(I have tons of pictures of him that I really need to make digital somehow to post here).

If Blackie even heard the word "Lake", he would run out of the office and jump in my truck.

He is the only dog that I have ever had to spell some words, instead of saying the word.

Blackie used to go to work with me all the time.

Never on a leash, not needed.

First time on a new job site he would jump out of the truck and start running. When he got to a property line I would yell "no".

He would stop and run in another direction, and I would yell "no" at the property line.

It was like he wanted to learn what his roaming areas was, and he would never leave them once he knew.

My 2 gallon water cooler had a spout on top, and bottom. I used the top spout, he drank out of the bottom one.

He loved riding on backhoes, but he would get tired of being on a excavator, and he would start pushing the pedals to make it move, (pissed me off and I would have to get the machine back in the correct position).

You could never have any trash in the bed of your truck, Blackie was a litterbug.

One morning before daylight on the way to work I seen all these cars swerving behind me, Blackie would take any trash and throw it in the air and watch the wind take it out of the truck.

At one time or another almost everyone got bit at least one time, but only because he always had to have the last word, if you were playing with him a tad rough or messing with him.

The only thing I could never get him to do was to catch a frisbee with his mouth, he would jump up and catch it with his feet, and then put it in his mouth and bring it back.

If I had to go to a office building or anywhere, I would always tell him to stay in the truck, and he would.

But 99% of the time he was invited in also no matter where we was, and in the hallway I would drink from the water fountain that you push the button, and he would also stand up and drink from it also.

If invited into anyone's office, I would say "get in that chair", and he would sit there the whole time like he was somebody.

Back to Dads lake, at times he was a pain in the ass.

If I wanted to go swimming, he was right there swimming also, and whining very loud the whole time.

He would drown your ass the way he acted.

I would have to get about chest high in the water, and hold him, and he loved that.

We kept a Jon boat at that 7 acre lake, and at first he wanted no part of that, when we were going to take the boat out to fish.

But you could not fish, because he would swim out there, and mess all the fishing up.

The only time I ever tied that dog was one time at the lake, when I really wanted to fish. I tied him to a tree in the shade.

That damn dog broke free from that in about 20 minutes, and was back to his swimming around the boat stuff.

So that time I grabbed him, and pulled him into the boat, and he loved it then.

He would get excited when he seen our fishing bobbers moving, and if a small one and we through it back, he would stick his head in the water to try to see where it went.

After that anytime we wanted to put the boat in the lake, you would have to move it to the lake with him in it.

He meant that he was not going to get left out again.

Most every dog I have ever had was afraid of fireworks, not Blackie.

That crazy fool would get in the middle of everything dancing around and having a good time.

I never once seen him in the dog house I got for him, but he did like to sit or lay on the top of it.

It does not snow here much, but he loved it when it did. He would run around at full speed making fast turns and goofing off.

And then he would just lay in the snow and go to sleep, and not even want to come back inside, that dog loved the snow.

He had very pretty brown eyes anyway, and he knew how to beg.

If having a cookout he could be a pain.

But you could just sit a chair out for him, and tell him to get in that chair, and he would never leave the chair until he was told to.

Toss him some steak meat and bones, and he would pick them up with his paws, and lay in the chair very content.

This dog was so awesome it would probably make for a decent movie the more I think about it.

Yes I have had some AKC dogs, and some pound rescues in my life, I loved them all, but so funny thinking back now how awesome this stray pup was for such a long time, several years ago now. (the vet estimated him at about 10 months old when he strayed in).

And about the vet, well..."you want to weigh him, Blackie, get on the scale, you want him on that 4 foot high table now, Blackie jump up there".

The vet people loved him, he minded so awesome, and was so awesome.

BUT, the first time I took him to the vet I seen how he acted when being checked for worms, with the plastic thing in the butt, so when it got to that point, I would say "ok, I am leaving the room now, I highly recommend you muzzle this dog and strap him down very well".

They would be like "as awesome as this dog is, does anything you tell him, what is the problem"?

"Trust me, I am leaving the room, and you better muzzle and tie him down very well".

The dog was odd about some things. That worm check at the vets office would turn him into a vicious killer, but if I just picked up a phone book to look up a number he would cower.

The dog was just born a tad early I guess, for whatever reason the only thing he was ever afraid of was phone books.

He was fine if we were reading the newspaper though.

All we could figure is he must have been hit by a phone book, before he ever strayed onto our property.

Blackie did turn all gray, and died from old age.

We gave him a awesome life, and he left us with a whole lot of awesome memories.

Amazing how just some stray pup turned out to be the most amazing dog ever.

Whenever it rains(drizzle or thunderstorm), she hides out in the mud room breaks my heart. She must have ptsd. It literally makes her tremble. There have been many no sleep nights from her shaking the bed because of storms.

I can sympathize. Harley is deathly afraid of thunder. Many a day/evening has been spent with him trembling at my side. I'm not sure why he developed it. He was fine up until he was about 4 years old. He never even gave it a second thought, and then one day, he pulled a 180 and even loud nouses like the garbage men banging cans will send him diving for cover for an hour.

Try a small t shirt or a " thunder jacket " they act like a firm hug and hey, who doesn't like a good hug!

My old dog Palmer was always like that. Fireworks too. Just comfort them and give them a safe comfy place to go.

I have a thundeshirt. Does nothing. I have calming treats. Does nothing. I hold her tight and try to calm her. Does nothing. She is literally terrified even on a light rain. The vet gave me pills for fireworks and storms.

I gave her half a pill in late afternoon when there was going to be fireworks that night. It fucked her so bad that I was scared for her. She was so zonked out but wouldnt just take a nap. My bro and another buddy was over so she wanted to mingle with us but couldn’t walk. She tried to move around but looked like a walking dead dragging legs and shit. I could see the panic on her face wondering what was going on with her. She knew something wasn’t right.

I never want to to do that again. But I feel so bad knowing 4th is coming up and all week of storms here.

Nothing much you can do about the storms, but on the 4th maybe go camping far out in the wilderness away from fireworks.

#4165 2 years ago

That’s not a bad idea for the 4th. It’s rough around hear. Fireworks every night for like a month.

I’m having to seriously think about having my dog put to sleep, he is so unpredictable and wants to attack most things. He is very aggressive and went to bite my hand the other day, it was so quick it was shocking. Luckily it must have been a warning as it just grazed my fingers. He has been aggressive since a pup and has bitten a few people but luckily only very lightly.

He has been away for training at a great cost and came back worse.
There is a security dog training company near us ( not above ) only about 8 miles away and one of the best in the UK who I went to see first for a consultation and they said they have never seen a dog like him with the wildness and reactions and thought maybe he had a brain issue! They refused to help us. I just didn’t believe it but think they are probably right as we have tried for nearly 5 years now and he is getting worse. The bitch we got him which we thought would help even dislikes him as she is even growling at him to stay away from her sometimes and they have got into fights.

It’s come to a head now as he is now limping and has an issue with his front paw, something wrong inside as no infection. He will not let me look at it as he will get very aggressive and bite me I’m sure, just will not let me look properly. I have tried.
Now I could get it looked at but know if it is operated on he will not let anyone near him to tend to it, just getting him sedated or in a vehicle will be very hard.

My wife works for an equine hospital so treatment is not a problem if it’s safe but one of the vets told her if we want to put him to sleep it’s quite understandable and he would do it due to him being dangerous/unpredictable. He is a powerful dog.

He has to be put out if anyone comes in the house and even the neighbour this weekend asked us to keep him in because he is having his fencing replaced and the people doing it said they wouldn't do it if my dog is in the garden even though we have a 6’ chainlink fence next to his! He is a scary dog to most people.

Just had to get this off my chest, not sure what to do. Thanks guys and sorry to go on, seems this dog wants to rule!

Can you muzzle?
He looks beautiful, but as you say unpredictable is not good.
You are a very responsible person by the sounds of it and am sure you will make correct decision.
If it was me, I would probably say my good byes. Emotions can’t play into this one as you stated he went at you.
Good luck Dude

#4195 2 years ago

I think you already know what needs to be done. I’m sure it will be hard, but what would be way harder is if the dog really hurt someone badly. Sounds like that is just a matter of time.

#4196 2 years ago

I have slowly been trying to get a muzzle on him but I don’t think it’s really the answer for a dog like him, he could be on my lap cuddling into me one second then the next growling in my face. Happens for no reason now and again, if he is on one of the sofas and you approach him from the back he will probably growl at you. I will try and get some footage of him doing this. After his aggression he will go and lie under a table, really weird.

The vet is away this week so have more time to think about this, as you can imagine it’s pretty upsetting having to even think about doing the deed.
My kids think I’m crazy liking him because of what he is like, but you know how it is one man and his dog.
It’s definitely for the best but a bitter pill to take, bad enough putting a dying dog down.

No it’s normal, I think it might be just a wild trait or a nervous issue. Sometimes he will go under a table and shake, it’s like he is stopping himself doing something horrible after the event. He can be very very focused when food is involved, the other dog will not even look at him when it’s feeding time.

The breed is Thai Ridgeback, the bitch we got for him came from a litter from the champion dog of Europe so her lineage is very good. The breeder told me I would see night and day difference between the two and she wasn’t wrong! Some of these dogs are known to be very nasty and seems I have one, a friend of the vet who is another vet was attacked by one and he put that one down so it’s a known thing. Wish I knew how bad before.

I wasn't going to say anything , but I've been thinking about this all day .
You say he will cuddle into you , then he can growl at you ?
And he almost bit your hand once . He also growls at the bitch you got him , and they fight sometimes ?
And he barks at people .
and you want to put him down ?
All of these things my dogs have done .
Find an animal behaviorist , find someone who can handle him , get one of those padded suits or put him in a pen where he can't get anyone .
You chose to get a vicious breed of dog and now you're surprised he's aggressive ?
You sound like you're afraid of your dog , and he's picking up on that , he needs a leader .
I've had a few beers and don't want to sound like a cunt but I don't want to see a dog put down if it's not necessary .

A friend of mine had a dog that was vicious and thought he was the alpha in the house. My friend, being very old school, saw what was going on and tolerated it until the dog bit him unprovoked. It's sounds terrible, but he actually had a full blown fist fight with the dog and the dog almost got the better end of it because he just would not back down. After that fight, the dog accepted his place of non dominance and they were fine for his whole life.
I'm not advocating animal abuse, just pointing out that sometimes it can be a dominance issue.
