Coming to grips as to when is the right time to say good bye.
Dewey our Doxie, will be 16yrs old come June.
Just like us all, he can not out-fox father time.
Dewey has been moving pretty slow lately.
He can no longer walk up or down stairs, can barely manage the 2 steps up/down the porch
to go do his business outside anymore.
He still has a very good appetite, he follows his nose,
but is nearly blind with cataracts and his hearing is selective at best.
Of late his hind legs have given out from under him, having wood floors does not help his ability to pick himself up and gain any traction.
He has also started to piss and poo in the house, on occasion, if we do not get to the door in time, or if he even bothers to go to the door.
It used to be he could hold it no problem, and we would let him out every 4 hrs during the day, now we are on a 1-2 hr potty schedule,
he can hold it for about 6 hrs thru the night, but if he gets up stirring we take him out just in case.
It did get so bad last week that he was constantly doing the splits with his hind legs or he would drag them behind him, barely able to stand on his own.
We got some meds from the vet, Rimadyl, and that helped a lot and he is back to walking;
with an occasional gitty-up and go, especially if he knows mealtime is involved.
But the end is near, and we do not want him to suffer, also my wife and I are not getting younger,
and if we get to the point where we have to carry him everywhere, (he is ~25lbs),
it takes a toll on us, especially my wife, who has had Dewey since he was a pup.
I am hoping he can make it thru the summer, but who knows, It will be a tough decision no matter when it comes.
Sometimes I almost wish he dies peacefully in his sleep, so we will not have to make that final decision for him.

I feel for you pinwiz and although it is a personal decision I feel the same as you and don't want mine to suffer. My Yorkie Nikki is 14 and will turn 15 this fall and it brings me to tears to think I may have to soon part with her. My heart and my prayers for strength go out for you and your wife, they are a part of the family and it hurts no less than losing a child when they've been with you over the years. Hope your buddy can hang in over the summer without issue so you have a few more memories to cherish going forward.

It’s not easy, but you will definitely know when. My heart breaks , but it is the final act of love you can give. All the best

Get some hall mats and make some paths for him so his feet don't slip .
Best wishes mate .

This is what we did for our Molly before it was her time. We had those anti slip area rugs basically covering our hardwood floors. Same scenario as you and one day I looked at her and realized how sad she was and how I was doing all of that for myself so I wouldn't have to make the decision. When I did, I had someone come to the house so she wouldn't have to make a last trip to the "vet", which she hated. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make and I cried like a baby, but it was the right thing to do for her.

I'm so sorry, but as dog people, we are full aware that this is part of it.

You will know when the time comes.

Take peace in knowing your dog had a good life with you!
Think only of the good times!

Get another dog ASAP!

Peace, Eric

Its kinda hard to explain, but when my old boxer Junior had to go, I knew it was time because his eyes had lost all life sortof.. So I knew.

Anyhow, little OTTO got his stitches removed yesterday, and here he is falling asleep.

Had a similar situation with our cat. He would sometimes just not be there. Like dementia or something. Some good times near the end but other times he just seemed confused and tired.

Yes. Totally this. Junior would just stare straight ahead, and for anyone who knew him it would be very strange. I wouldnt relate to dementia in Juniors case though, more like that he felt he was done. And fuck me my eyes are tearing up as I write this. You are in my thoughts @pinwiztom. Take care

We had a very nice moment today, as Norway is going into the "hardest" lockdown ever we managed to get out and enjoy a beer (or three) together in the spring sun.

Jack had ACL surgery last Wednesday.
He does not like the cone, but it should come off in a week. We have to protect his stitches.
And the crate is to limit his activity. He is a very active pup.

Luna is on her 5th collar. I think this one should last. It's amazing how little stuff there is for giant dogs out there. We had a really solid leather collar, but the d ring snapped while she was on a good trot on her lead. She didnt seem to notice. The rest of them she just outgrew. I'm also going to be making a leash out of climbing rope..

Get him one of these blow up doughnuts, they work very well and they will like it much better.

I've never understood that. And altering diet only makes things worse. No matter how sweet and cute they are. Their butts unleash hellfire.

You know it's bad when they get up and walk away because they can't stand it.

I wish it were always that simple. We had a dog that suffered from seizures. Started just before he turned 6. At first, one every few months. Then every 6-8 weeks, then once a month, then clusters of seizures across a couple of days. The impact of these left him dazed and confused. Again, at first maybe 15-30 minutes after the seizure, eventually it took more than a day for him to recover. Between episodes he was fine. Ataxia crept in but he was still happy in the lulls. Now understand this was a very slow decline that took place over six years before we finally made the call. That's how slow it was. This was not a terminal disease per se, nor were we dealing with him being in terrible pain. When is the right time? What is that magic line that tells you it's time? When he is himself only 75% of the time, 50%, 25%, 10.2% of the time? We finally felt it was time but I have no idea if we should have waited longer or done it sooner. Sometimes there just are no right answers or what I chose to beleive is every answer is the right answer as long as it is made from a place of caring and love. That's the best we can ever do. I wish pinwiztom peace with the decision. (By the way, we have a dog that is 15 1/2, blind, deaf and living on borrowed time, so I definitely empathize with the wish that one day he would fall asleep and not wake up)

It is simple if you have compassion and love. I have done it for animals and recently my Father.
It is not easy but something inside helps you make the hardest decision and ultimate act of love.

Just a tip, teach your dog hand signals to go along with your verbal commands.

I've been doing it with our pup and it works really well. Even when the kids are being obnoxious she can focus on my visual commands. Should she lose her hearing, she'll at least still be able to take commands.

We had to say goodbye to this amazing little guy yesterday.

He had some pretty bad medical issues that crept up on him all of the sudden.
He fought like a champ to try and beat it.

Even though he had those little 3” legs....he always thought he was 10 feet tall and bulletproof!
He guarded our front window and protected us from all dangers! From strangers, dogs, squirrels, ice cream trucks, and those shady up to no good plastic bags blowing down the street!

The pain is gone now buddy. Go find Brody and run the fields with him.

Love ya Todd! You will be missed.

does anyone here want a beautiful, sweet and super intelligent lab. My daughter found one about a year ago. We all love her but she needs a bigger home. She is too smart and active to be in a small home. She tears things up to deal with all the energy she has. She is, we think, black lab and pit. She looks 100% lab but when you look at her face you see pit. I would take her but the wife says no, I have two boxers. When my old man boxer dies Ill take her if she still has her but we need to find a home for her sooner before she tears up my rent house. Ill get pics
