Quoted from Who-Dey:

I bet they love their new life and home. They are awesome looking dogs!

Retired race dogs are a funny thing.
A lot of greyhound owners refer to them as the worlds fastest couch potato’s because they love to lounge around all day. You would think they need to get out and run a lot, but really not so much (more like short sprinters). Some people also refer to them as the cats of the dog world because the lounge so much. I figure they have earned it so why not. We have our dogs race records and they both ran over 200 races each.
If a race fog is good, they race the hell out of them, which is what happens with ours.
When greyhounds go up for adoption you mostly find them in two age groups 1 - 1 and a half or around around 4 years old.
The younger dogs are retired at that age because the are not good racers (slow, skittish, distracted etc.). If they are good race dogs they normally don’t retire them until around 4 when they start slowing down from age.
Ours basically aged out because they were getting slower (they are still fast as hell though). We’re on five acres and they have both caught quail and rabbits on the property.

Number one dog rule that we tell people visiting the house:
I you go outside the front door (which is not fenced) make sure you don’t let the dogs out. Keep in mind they are trained to bolt when a door opens. They can get up to 35 miles per hour in three strides and will be out of sight in no time.

Well, the new puppy is finally home.
So far do good.
We’ve been closely monitoring the other two dog to make sure they properly socialize with the new one and don’t think it’s a squeaky toy.

My daughter is on cloud 9 right now and hasn’t been away from the new dog since I brought it home.
First time I went out and did anything in weeks.
Was kind of an odd exchange where we met at a park and never got within 6 feet of each other.

Anyhow, my daughter named her Lola and we’re pretty happy to have her in the family.
She is a miniature Italian Greyhound.

Normally we adopt pets, but in this case since the dog is intended for our 11 year old daughter we opted for a puppy.
Already had our first “she had an accident on the floor, what do I do” moment.
Pivotal moment where I got to say “well, it’s your dog, go clean it up”.

You guys want to see a sweet and beautiful thing? Someone threw this one out. My daughter found her dirty and scared walking down the street. I am trying to get my wife to let me keep her. She is very sweet and very smart.

I would say she is content.

#2258 4 years ago

My daughter is not giving her up. She told me she found her and I said get rid of it. She brought it to my house and put her in my lap and I was in love but now so are they. I guess we will share her. She will be loved for sure. I took her for a car ride in the corvette and she thought that was great fun.

We put in our deposit on our puppy today. It's coming from the Mastiff parents pictured below, and I couldn't be more excited. We're getting a female, so if it takes after its mom, it should only be about 170lbs...

I'm looking to brush up on some training resources before we take it home in about 2 months. If anyone has advice on a minimalistic, useful, free, and reputable site for puppy training, I'm looking.

I had an English Mastiff, he got to 195lbs, great dogs, they love to just lounge around, surprisingly, be prepared for a lot of shedding, seems like it’s year round, lol. The most important thing with these is they have to be taught early who is in charge as they can be stubborn as hell.

Never had a Mastiff but we did have a few Shar-pei their distant kin. Both Mastiffs and Shar-pei slobber and shed a lot, and I mean a lot, I would never let mine drink inside as they would have 1/2 the bowl running off their face when they walked off

amazing dogs. We had many over the years when growing up.
Are you hoping for apricot or brindle?

As for training, I suggest just doing some online research. The Cesar way.

He is actually really good at behavioral training and understanding how to speak doglish
https://www.cesarsway.com/category/dog-training/

Lots of vids out there, but it really is just about you learning how to train. All dogs are smart and trainable if you speak their language.

Also, start a fund now for ACL and other issues. You will have them (unless super lucky) and they are costly. The one problem with mastiffs
DO lots of research on what, how, when to feed, esp while they are growing at an exponential rate. The research and effort now will pa off in dividends over the life of the pup.

Yeah, shedding isn't great, but we're prepared for it. We had a lab/shepherd and he shed a lot.

Ours was just born on 4/12, so a little early to tell for sure. She's either fawn or apricot, we're hoping for apricot.

I am a big believer in Cesar. I'll definitely be brushing up on his stuff.

That sucks to hear about ACLs. We figure with a big dog we'll have some big costs. We're hoping if we're careful we can avoid some of them. One of the breeders we talked to said that we should avoid anything other than a short walk when they're under a year since they're growing so fast.

Buckley looks like a cute dog, especially like his beard.
These doxie dogs are smart and stubborn.

Our Doxie Dewey is almost 14 yrs old now,
when my wife bought him as a pup he was supposed to be a mini also,
but he is far from that at 25#.
She seems to think this will be our last year with him in our lives.
He does not have much energy anymore, except when it comes to meal time,
which as far as he is concerned is every waking minute.

Why not get this for Dewey

https://thepetsmaster.com/best-dog-wheelchair/
Now if someone could invent him a stairlift for your very large house

#2276 4 years ago

Now while you are correct that Dewey is not as agile as he used to be, he can still walk around, albeit at a much slower pace. He does not need a wheel chair just yet . He does have trouble going up stairs now but he can manage 1 or 2 steps but can not jump up onto the couch anymore unassisted. And we use a dog bed mattress to cushion his fall when he jumps down off the couch. He will bark if he wants assistance off the couch, but if he hears (or probably smells) mom preparing lunch he jumps off and hightails it to the kitchen right away.

I switched my last dog from clippers to the grinder because was not having any part of the clippers after his very first experience. It only took him a couple of times before he got use to it and actually didn't mind it - even looked forward to it when you took him in because you could hear him "tap dancing" as walked. Probably didn't hurt the folks doing the grinding fawned all over him and gave him a treat afterwards either.

Sorry, no pics, I still use a old flip phone with no internet.

BUT, the last 3 days have been cool, I have been on a new jobsite way off in the country, and every morning about 8am, a Jack Russel and 2 coon hounds show up looking for attention and something to chase.

Very entertaining when they go after a deer.

I feel sorry for the one of the coon hounds, it does not seem bright, I had to save it from a dump truck backing up, it was in la-la land.

The Jack Russel is very entertaining and knows tricks and shows off.

(this is out in the country, where everyone has lots of acreage, and this is just dogs neighbors have, that congregate around any humans they can find, these dogs love people). And they love hunting, it has been a fun few days watching them.

And apparently whoever owns the dogs gets home around 3pm, because you never see any of the dogs later than that.

These 3 dogs have been having a great time, and getting a few treats from us new people in their area, and they are the most friendly and entertaining dogs I have ever been around.

Does he use a cat litter box to do his business.
My doxie who is nearly 14yrs old was initially (House/garage) trained on a litter box.
He will still use it if we lead him to one (when it is raining heavy outside),
other we do let him out to poo and pee most times.

Why do dogs eat cat shit. There are few things nastier.

Why do dogs eat cat shit.

Cats eat richer foods than dogs, so cat crap smells good to them.

Nothing like a catsicle to cheer a dog up.
