We had to put our Jack Russell Lilith down the other weekend. It's been my first loss of a canine friend and it has been so much more difficult to deal with than I would have thought.
We think she was about 12 years old and we had her for 8.5 years. We think she was abused before we got her. She was so shy and nervous. She eventually became the happy dog she was meant to be. She gained a lot of self-confidence and was very happy to meet new people and dogs.
Love your dogs while they're here!
Quoted from dirkdiggler:Thanks Jimi for pooping where you did!

How many of you wipe your dog's behind after they do their dootie
when you let them out to do their business or after taking a walk?
My wife has always done this with her (our) dog Dewey,
with some tissue or old napkin,
to help minimize any mess when he comes back inside
and avoid the butt scootching across the carpet.
Sorry for your loss. It is hard. I posted something that I found on a Vet Website that helped us a bit when we were going through this.

Quoted from pinwiztom:butt scootching
I was told they do that when the need their glands "expressed". This can be done by the pets owner if brave.
Or if they have worms.
The gland thing could have just been the breed we had at the time, toy poodle.
Quoted from Sarge:Bassets are the best!
Here is Georgia
She was rescued from Ohio Basset Rescue
She is beautiful!! Did you get her from a lady named Kristy?

Gross.

As far as I know all dogs glands need pinching at some time. Our previous Female golden retriever's would go a couple times a year. YOU WILL KNOW IMMEDIATELY WHEN ITS NEEDED! It's a rank smell. Like fish and blood
Our current male mix thankfully only needed it once a few years back.
If it's needed done, you can get the vet to do it. Or like me, get the wife to do it
The scooting is a tell tale sign of worms.
Quoted from dirkdiggler:Or like me, get the wife to do it
This is exactly what my little lady does and im always so relieved she does it and never asks me to help. She pumps our little guys butt every few months. Apparently "you can feel the swallon glands" when it needs doing.
Quoted from Who-Dey:She is beautiful!! Did you get her from a lady named Kristy?
When we got her it was from OBHR
A woman named Eva was in charge then
I believe she has since left that organization
We have been helping Buckeye Basset Hound Rescue ever since

That right there is a reason to not have small dogs. I have never had that in a big dog. I don't do small dogs

Happened at least twice a year on our purebred golden retriever. Not sure if it's a stress thing or what? Maybe cause she was a fixed female?

No Eva is still there and if I’m not mistaken, she is the one who started OBHR. She is in Cincinnati I believe but Kristy is in Michigan is the reason that I ask. Bassets are awesome, that’s all that I know!!

I had to have my dogs glands done once and when I did, my vet told me to feed them dry dog food and it less likely to occur again and it hasn't.
Ah, anal glands. Who came up with something that is supposed to make poo smell worse?
They are supposed to empty slowly, naturally, every time your dog goes #2, imparting their custom scent marker onto it. However, for a variety of reasons for some dogs it doesn't happen and then they can also get blocked and impacted.
A big factor is diet. If the stool isn't firm enough, the glands don't get squeezed as designed. Higher quality dry food is better. Increasing the fibre can help too. I use a quarter cup of wheat germ on dinner for one of my boys every night. Some people swear by cooked pumpkin.

Speaking of dog food, what do you guys use? My last dog was on Blue Buffalo but I’ve started this guy out on Taste of the Wild. Hopefully Its a good quality food.
Quoted from Who-Dey:what do you guys use?
I used Orijen but it was too rich so switched to Nutri Source. Same with treats. All expensive healthy stuff.

I thought about the Origen but I gotta feed myself too lol. That is expensive stuff! I think any of the holistic foods are going to be much better than the Chinese store bought crap and most of those treats are bad bad bad for sure.
Quoted from Spankey:Our 10 week old Springer, Ripley! Great to have a dog again.
I see Ripley has a “1/2 stache” on the right side, 1 year old Maggie has one on the left.

If you named yours Ripley after RBION I should have named mine Total Nuclear Annihilation and not Kumo

That is one good looking dog you have there!

Taste of the Wild is quality food. We switched to Merrick Grain Free a couple of years ago, and are very happy with it too. There are excellent reviews of these and many other grain free options here:
We’ve always opted for dry as the boys get loose stools too often on the wet. And then there’s the cost of wet, and a bunch of stinky old cans left behind to recycle. We add water to the dry for a bit of gravy, and there’s always fresh water around otherwise.

you tend to get what you pay for with dog food. I also have found you either pay for good food now or pay for more medical and stress later.
We feed Acana and like it very much. You also will find you need much less volume of the good food, the dogs will be healthier/feel/act better, and bonus is that they poop less volume and it dries out quickly for easy clean up.
If you do the calculation based on how less you need to feed, I bet the expensive stuff comes out to barely more than crappy kibble that is filler and junk.
Add on the other positives and it is a no brainer to feed the good stuff IMHO.

I believe Taste of the Wild is a pretty good food probably. It gets good ratings.

Ingredients look good. And no grain.

Yeah I think it's at least middle of the road like Blue Buffalo or something like that. Looks to be far better than any of the traditional store bought foods out of China.
Quoted from MrSanRamon:Mocha, waiting for a treat...
How cute. Mocha looks like a dog version of Albert Einstein
Quoted from pinwiztom:I wanna see some updated photos of Megatron and HEP's pup Maverick
Here is Maverick after a trim around the eyes so he can see better. Up to about 7.5lbs now. Should make it to around 12 or so.That chewed up trim on the steps is apparently one of his remodeling projects.

Quoted from amkoepfer:3 year old italian greyhound/min pin mix. He puts up with a lot!
Just curious, did his heart check out ok?

I recorded one of my dogs using my phone one day because it's not regular:
Also just found this old video. Watch Bronson (blue collar) about 1:55:

Are they brothers?! What breed are those boys!!? Nice dogs
Quoted from dontfeed:Rubble enjoying the fresh snow.
Nice, what kind of dog is he?
Quoted from Dee-Bow:Are they brothers?! What breed are those boys!!? Nice dogs
According to the DNA test:
5/8 American Staffy
1/8 English Staffy
1/8 Rottweiller
1/8 Bitsa
They are brothers, which if I had my time again I would avoid (google littermate syndrome). They are absolutely adorable though. I wrote something longer about them a few pages back...

Thanks. He's an American Eskimo or Esky.
Quoted from ajfclark:And my wife took another picture of me yesterday afternoon...
I let my animals sleep with me if they want also. I can’t believe how many people frown upon this when I tell them and they just think it’s terrible to let a dog in the bed. They can think whatever they want, he’s my buddy and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
