Hey guys, does anyone have experience with their dogs having hot spots? My new dog has them. Took him to the vet already and they are being treated. Just wondering how long they take to heal usually and if they are common to return in the future?
Thanks!

It's usually a crap shoot on time to heal and a lot will depend on whether he/she can reach them to lick or bite. There are several different causes but the most common I've seen is food allergies. It could also be something as simple as the detergent you use to wash their bedding or carpet powder if you use any.

Cool. Thanks. We make him wear a cone when we are sleeping or away, and we make sure he doesn't mess with them when we are home. So little to no licking or biting or scratching. One on his hip and one on his neck/lower cheek area.

Two of my dogs had a couple about a year ago. For the one, we had to keep an eye on her to make sure she wasn't biting at it all the time. We were prescribed a shampoo, but my wife also read that virgin coconut oil is good for hot spots and maybe has some anti-microbial properties, so we regularly rubbed that on the affected areas too. If nothing else it made the spots smell better. Took a few months until the skin looked better and then a while longer for hair to grow back.
I keep my two more allergy prone dogs on daily loratadine. If your vet agrees to it, they should be able to tell you the proper dosing depending on size. I prefer loratadine to other options they were on before since it's cheap and can be bought over the counter.
Here's hoping it's not a recurring issue.

Wow. Thanks for all the great info buddy!
My Jack Russel/Beagle mix, Bonnie, who currently lives with her mom since I work long hours. The black & white puppy pic is of her brother, Clyde (RIP). She has a large list of key words she recognizes--pizza, tacos, coffee, names of dogs she's visited a few times, names of people she's visited...when it gets really cold or starts raining or snowing, if one of the cats is outside, I'll ask her if that cat is outside. She panics and immediately we have to go to the door so she can find the cat. She is friends with all three cats that live here, but likes napping with Pawl--a cat named after a random cat from the Family Guy episode with Mayor West and his cat launcher. She got the gold beaded necklace from the Pacers cheerleaders who saw her when we were walking outside Bankers Life Fieldhouse one morning and they were heading inside for gameday preparations. It was during the playoffs and she was wearing a Pacers bandanna. Good dog.

Cute! She looks similar to my Lilith. Are you sure about the mix? She looks like an Irish Jack Russell to me. They're more squat and stout than the more common Parsons Jack Russell.
That's what her original owner said she was. I never had it verified and the few vets she has visited never really said anything so I went with it. She and her brother were free off Craigslist and worth every penny!

He doesn't look impressed at all with the idea of being Pope.
This is Melvin, he seems to like to play with his food.
Here is another more interesting one with Melvin. He likes to strategically hide his bones...take a look:

I love Scooter.
I haven't checked the thread in a bit. I'm kinda disappointed that this has been put in the basement considering the nature of a lot of crap that isn't.
Quoted from pinster68:My pup's Oscar & Dexter several years back. Oscar (a boxer-shepherd mix) just turned 10, and Dex (a Whippet-Beagle mix) is now 5. Time sure flies.

A whippet/beagle mix has to have a great profile. I'd like to see a pic of Dex standing. I think my little one is a chi-weenie. Not sure because she's adopted, but she's got extremely long legs and her body is skinny and curvy like a whippet's.

I take a billion photos of Dexter, but wouldn't you know it I can't find a recent one of him standing. Here's a good one showing his long legs. He's pretty quick with them too ... excellent hunter.
Quoted from bob_e:This is Dave, My first Golden Retriever. Adopted from a veterinarian's shelter, he was abused, deathly afraid of water and neglected.

Such a damn shame what people are capable of. Dave looks like a great boy. Thanks for adopting, there are so many great dogs out there that just need someone with sense or patience.

That's a handsome pup, and I can really see how long his legs are there. No doubt he can eat up ground with those stilts.
Has anyone with multiple dogs have one of them nibble the others face? My new dog max does it to my old dog Palmer all the time. It's pretty funny and Palmer just lets it happen.
I don't know his exact date of birth cause he's a rescue, but I know it was January 2008 when he was born. I usually do something nice for him around New Year's Day since I'm off of work anyway. He repaid me for the great meal by being a little shit all day, but He's generally a great dog so I'll let him slide on his "birthday". image_(resized).jpegimage_(resized).jpeg
